Today’s game is just another indicator of the parity in college basketball because there are so many talented players. With the new rating systems of four quadrants , which I am not qualified about, I do know that is dumb to schedule teams in the lowest rating rung because a win does little for a teams resume and a loss can kill post season hopes.
Better to schedule teams like Hofstra than the Mike Anderson bottom feeders. It also makes a better schedule for the fans.
Somehow we always seem to play to the talent we compete against. Played UConn at their level and played Hofstra at their level. Difference is we would have lost this game last year. We play like we played against UConn, this game would have been over in the first half.

If we defended pick and roll better we win by 15. Joel struggled with it today. Speedy went 5 out and it worked. I feel like pitino was stubborn and didn't adjust because he knows this team needs to get better in man.
I got so tired of watching Joel switch and getting taken on a drive to the hole or a three right in front of him and couldn’t understand why we didn’t switch things up.

Classic Pitino, nothing is ever his fault. :D. First it's "no one was taught fundamental defense" and now my team was better last year. Well guess what, you brought the this team together, if they can't play defense and if they are not as 'talented' as a mid major than that's on you.
Isn’t it wonderful when life seems so simple to you?

What happened to the match-up zone that was so effective, and successful?

If we didn’t just crush Xavier and play UConn to the very end I guess I could understand concern but again the over reactions to each individual game to project how the season will go based on that performance is funny. We all should know by now each game is its own entity.

That is just human nature in sports. You play down or up to your comp.

So very true. Another truism very lost on many is that teams are only as good or bad as they play in any given game. Hofstra played very well, Claxton employed a great game plan and they executed, shots fell. Ledlum was out, Soriano played poorly but we found a way through Jenkins. Butler will be an entirely new game.

people on this board act like upsets don’t happen every day in college basketball…and guess what we won today!! vs a tough mid major and we are acting like the world is falling apart / and that we lost the game. Look at FAU today who now owns 2 quad 4 losses and lost to a team that had half there wins vs non division 1 teams with there leading scorer out.

This was a trap game and we won …Net only dropped 1 spot to 50 and now back on to Big East play.

We are in fine position and control everything. Let’s beat Butler and Posh on Tuesday!

Happy new year to everyone!

That was a good win. Playing close games like this against teams that make you uncomfortable with their style will only help later on. For years we went into conference play untested.

Regarding Soriano, he’s not a typical Pitino 5. He’s really a throw back big in todays game which makes what he’s accomplishing even more impressive!

I agree . Jenkins was the straw that stirred the drink today . Look at all his stats in nearly every category .

Props to Speedy Claxton , a great player and looks like on his way up the ladder of Coaching jobs .
See this is just dumb.
He played well today against a lower level of comp and that is great.
But he has not played well this season. Let him put together a stretch of good games then the haters will gladly go away.

Not just today. A number of teams, starting with Michigan, did it too. It makes me crazy that they switch on almost every screen, if it was me I'd have guys fighting through/Joel sloughing off way more. The only reason I can think of is that Pitino is obsessive about defending the three line but even still, you'd think after watching a parade of uncontested layups maybe the strategy would change. But I'm probably the third best coach in my kids CYO league not a HOF so what do I know? LOL

Ok Mr. Negativity. Show some class and admit that Jenkins played a good game. In fact, he may have, by himself, saved the team from a damaging loss.
He took 16 field goals and missed all but one jumper from what I recall. He’s not that type of player that should be taking 16 field goals.

You may get excited because he played well against 7-6 Hofstra after our conference schedule has begun, but I’m terrified for what that means for our next 3 conference games when he won’t be facing turnstiles.

He’s shooting 25% from 3 this year and he’s 2 for his last 23 if you take away the Sacred Heart game. 0-3 from deep last night. All the Hofstra guards were getting by him at will.

At what point does this kid stop taking twice as many jumpers as better shooters? Does he need to go 2-50?

I have been hard on Jenkins, but he won that game the last ten minutes. No one else was playing with any intensity toward the end, team looked like the crowd sounded and he willed them to victory. I understand a bit better now why pitino is so high on him—you need guys that bring it no matter what and pitino is propping up Jenkins as a model for others to emulate with his intensity (if not always his decision making). Props to Ayo too; he’s obviously limited offensively but he played some solid defense and moved his feet very well. The Iona kids do play their hearts out.

Hey Larry , we get your Jenkins dislike . But , you dump on him for playing against inferior level of Competition .

Yet , you leave out Soriano who also played against that lower level of Competition and didn’t exactly demonstrate any NBA skills against Hofstra . Shooting 5-9 against a team with no real big man and few blocks and no defensive rebounds .

I’m not trying to dump on Joel but , singling out Jenkins when other guys also didn’t distinguish them selves against Thomas and Dunbar .

Dinkle shot 3-10 from 3 for 9 points and 15 overall but , kind of disappeared when he couldn’t defend either Thomas , Dunbar and the other guard . If you want to throw around criticism , aren’t Dinkle , Ledlum really that lower level of player you complain Jenkins is ?

Both , these Ivies were suppose to be impact Players but , the reality is they are not . They are stepping up in class , and are nice players but , are they delivering what was expected ?
Pitino has ultimate confidence in Jenkins and who was in and took over the game and saved a win in crunch time ? Jenkins !

I didn’t see you dump on Luis , who shot 2-10 even though he’s rusty and coming back from injury . Good thing he’s a good free throw shooter . He also played against that lower level you insist on saying that only Jenkins did well against .

By the way , Thomas and Dunbar could play on any team in the BE or any other conference . They are big time players !

Back to Joel , him getting only 9 shots is partly on him . He doesn’t present himself well for the ball , doesn’t Demand it and just waits for it to come to him . That’s not being aggressive !
He didn’t even shoot a 3 yesterday . How come ? Was Jenkins to blame for that ?

Joel is the guy who has to be dominate in the BE . Getting 15 shots a game , rebounding and blocking shots . If he plays like we know he can , this team will finish mid tier BE and maybe , make the tourney .

If not , we could drop to the lower tier and miss everything .

Pitino knows Jenkins is the player on this team that runs the show . Obviously , you don’t .

Look, I think we know Jenkins is not a pure PG and has his issues as the main playmaker.

But, with this roster, unless Wilcher steps up going forward, we’ll have to live or die this year with Jenkins as the main ball handler.

Today shows that if Jenkins reigns himself in a little and some other guys fill the gaps, we can win and Jenkins can be effective.

I think we’ve yet to see the full impact of Luis with a full healthy roster. So, maybe if Luis kind of stabilizes and Wilcher can step it up, going forward we’ll be fine.

For next year, hopefully the combo of Wilcher, Lefty (who as a Euro could be better than the average frosh PG) and maybe a portal addition, may have better our PG play. But we could miss fine if what Jenkins does provide.

Speedy a class act & obviously smart to look to extend playing us.

I’m all for it but Hofstra filled about 20 seats, even though you don’t even have to make a turn to get to UBS from the campus. They must have fans who really don’t like to pay to park. Point being I hope Speedy realizes if the teams play again he should be prepared to head to CA.

Latest From Zach re Hofstra game:

Happy New Year everyone. Just a few thoughts on Hofstra game:

- I hate the idea of playing a buy game after league games. Impossible to recreate the intensity. Felt like that was lacking yesterday.

- Update on metrics: St. John's is a 50 in NET, 45 in in Ken Pom, 3-3 in Quad 1/2. Good spot to be in. Have to start piling up good wins now, though.

I thought yesterday was Joel Soriano's worst game of the year. An average game for him and that's a 15-point win. Wouldn't make too much of it. I heard he was a bit under the weather.

- Loved RJ Luis' game yesterday. 12 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists. The shot will come. Needs to gamble less on defense, Rick Pitino said. But he's such a good athlete. Just has to stay on the floor.

- My read on the UConn/Carnesecca thing: This is a way to tweak the Huskies. There is clearly a developing rivalry/animosity between the two.
