And another thing. How the F do these kids get money now ? I was mowing lawns shoveling snow going to the local video store ( pre blockbuster ) renting out their 1 copy of whatever movie of the book we were going to have to do a book report on then not returning it and gladly paying late fees and making VCR copies of it and rerenting them to every kid to lazy to read the book ( basically 95% of my class ) These kids nowadays on my block for last 17 years not 1 has ever shoveled snow or mowed a lawn WTF
So true, story about the family that lives across the street from me in suburban northern NJ. The last winter we had several significant snow events, my neighbor was looking for kids to shovel the sidewalks of people he did landscaping for in the summer. He plowed driveways where he could but normally a couple of guys from his summer crew did the shoveling. Anyway, that year they were not available and he knocked on the door of the guy across the street and asked if his HS age son and his friends were interested in shoveling for $25 bucks an hour cash. Danny turned it down saying that was not enough; crux of the story is that Danny is now a junior in college looking for an internship and asked me to help him. I told him sorry, I couldn’t with no real explanation but I look for a work ethic first and foremost. He may very well have grown up and out of that “phase“ but how would I know?

Honestly $25 an hour is not even close to worth it.

For a HS kid!! For shoveling snow!! Not sure what world you live in but it is not the same one I do. To each his own…………
I’m 54. When I was in junior high and high school I got paid much more than $25 and hour. And you don’t get paid per hour. It’s per house. More like $25-50 a house. Do as fast as you can and do a great job and move onto the next. Made a ton of money back then.

I grew up during an interesting time experiencing both when online gaming / social media weren't things during elementary / middle school (90s - mid 00s), but were during high school (mid to late 00s). There was a huge shift in how most people hung out, during elementary / middle school we were outside playing all the time, but after the mid 00s the younger generations (including my younger siblings) were outside much, much, much less frequently.

I'm a huge fan of tech and gaming (for my business I run several tech-focused YouTube channels / TikToks), but without question the way kids interacted before the explosion of social media / online gaming was better. I had much more fun playing sports outside, skateboarding, exploring nature, etc. etc. then I ever had doing online gaming or going on social media. Physical activity outside just gives you that adrenaline rush, fresh air makes you feel better, the sun gives you Vitamin D, etc.

That's not even to mention the depressing side of social media, as they're designed to make you angry and click on more stuff (X and FB). Even something like Instagram makes people feel worse as everyone only shows the best parts of their lives.

Trying to get my 1 year old out as much as possible, but will be tough to maintain her interest in that and away from social media. Circling back to the shoveling snow thing, that's totally absurd that kids are embarrassed to do it, but I do in a sense feel bad for them given everything is shared online. There's no escaping that and I understand not wanting to be bullied. It's a sad way to grow up, and I'm thankful I got to experience my childhood before kids lived on social media.

Good for you but excuse me if I am a bit skeptical, if you were you certainly did not grow up where I did.

I ain't a marketing guy, but bringing Rick is was a great start. He's got star power. Think maybe a stronger advertising campaign. Definitely more games at MSG will help. Not really sure. But playing Hofstra at UBS ain't helping none.
Playing anybody at UBS ain't helping at all. You want the casual SJU fan to back SJU you have to play in NYC There are plenty of college bb fans and Sju fans who are not alumni who live in the city. They are not travelling to UBS.

True story. My dad would charge me per each house I mowed with his lawnmower every week ( I did about 10 houses a week ) and on big snow days where I needed his snowblower he charged me per driveway because he said I was depreciating the value of his lawnmower and snowblower. It pissed me off at the time but that's a true life lesson that made me financially responsible even in grade school and because of that paying UBS prices vs Hofstra didn't bother me ( kept it on topic )

Danny, the world needs ditch-diggers, too.

curious how many jobs for HS students pay $25/hour?

lots of resistance to upping minimum wage to $15, the world has passed me by .
You guys are crazy if you think someone should get $25 and HOUR for shoveling snow. $25 for a smaller house sure. But that can get done in 20 minutes.

Is this the shoveling shit thread?😳
No ! We were taking about Snow shoveling and lawn mowing . And ,, playing BB on outdoor courts . Which I do remember shoveling so we could play .

Some of us wondering who will shovel the snow at CA sidewalks and stuff this winter during a snow storm before a game .
We do know there won’t be any neighborhood kids out there doing it .

just open the doors to CA and everything outside will melt

Very interesting observations. Just figured I'd add that personally, some of my favorite memories growing up were playing pickup basketball games, and the courts were usually always full. One thing I've observed in recent years around NYC is that the basketball courts in the parks always seem empty. I've taken my son to tons of different playgrounds all across the boroughs, and always witness the same thing, empty basketball courts. It makes me wonder if with modern technology, kids are more glued to phones, apps, computers, video games, etc, and you won't see as many kids passionate about the game. I really have no idea, but makes it's sad staring at empty basketball courts.
Pickup games created toughness…the specter of losing and having to wait 3 games until you get “winners” was motivation to do what ever it takes to avoid losing…the toughness aspect is missing today

Playing without referees is underrated. I spent so much time yelling at kids I coached to stop looking for calls and play through contact.

I guess we are done with the Hofstra game thread.
Should I lock it now?

Similar story here.. Grew up in Flushing. A 6 inch snowfall meant 150 dollars or so for 4-6 hours or so of shoveling after doing my own house. You got paid by house and not the hour. This was 30+ years ago.
