He took 16 field goals and missed all but one jumper from what I recall. He’s not that type of player that should be taking 16 field goals.

You may get excited because he played well against 7-6 Hofstra after our conference schedule has begun, but I’m terrified for what that means for our next 3 conference games when he won’t be facing turnstiles.

He’s shooting 25% from 3 this year and he’s 2 for his last 23 if you take away the Sacred Heart game. 0-3 from deep last night. All the Hofstra guards were getting by him at will.

At what point does this kid stop taking twice as many jumpers as better shooters? Does he need to go 2-50?
I don’t post often, and I respect your opinion Marillac (we can agree to disagree), but I felt the need to post as the constant skepticism of Jenkins feels a bit much. He nearly had a triple double yesterday (21pt, 9 rb, 8ast), that’s hard to do against even the lowest of competition.

Also, Hofstra is not a doormat program. They won 25 games last year, and dominated their league, sharing the conference championship with college of Charleston who was ranked #18 at one point last year. Hofstra’s current record is irrelevant as they didn’t schedule cupcakes this year. They’ve played Duke (ACC), Saint Louis (A-10), George Washington (A-10), South Florida (AAC).. 7-6 does not mean they are a bad team. Speedy is a terrific coach and they have talent.

I’m not sure how much more validity Jenkins needs. He’s not perfect, but he’s athletic, a playmaker, and plays hard defense. More importantly he has the respect of one of the greatest coaches in college basketball history who’s been in this business a long time.

Right now he’s shooting 85% from the line, rebounding at a great clip for a guard, play-makes for others and gives it his all on defense. He plays hard and is also capable of scoring at any moment. Seems like a guy other teams have to worry about when they scout SJU. I’d take those things every day of the week from my point guard.

Anyhow, I hope everyone has a happy and healthy new year!

Latest From Zach re Hofstra game:

Happy New Year everyone. Just a few thoughts on Hofstra game:

- I hate the idea of playing a buy game after league games. Impossible to recreate the intensity. Felt like that was lacking yesterday.

- Update on metrics: St. John's is a 50 in NET, 45 in in Ken Pom, 3-3 in Quad 1/2. Good spot to be in. Have to start piling up good wins now, though.

I thought yesterday was Joel Soriano's worst game of the year. An average game for him and that's a 15-point win. Wouldn't make too much of it. I heard he was a bit under the weather.

- Loved RJ Luis' game yesterday. 12 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists. The shot will come. Needs to gamble less on defense, Rick Pitino said. But he's such a good athlete. Just has to stay on the floor.

- My read on the UConn/Carnesecca thing: This is a way to tweak the Huskies. There is clearly a developing rivalry/animosity between the two.
By tweak does Zach mean by saying it or actually doing it. Doubt school wants to lose the money from a packed MSG.

I’m all for it but Hofstra filled about 20 seats, even though you don’t even have to make a turn to get to UBS from the campus. They must have fans who really don’t like to pay to park. Point being I hope Speedy realizes if the teams play again he should be prepared to head to CA.
Would guess Speedy knows that

Yes. I was surprised how it seemed so few Hofstra fans. They were making a run usually you’d hear the opposing teams fans making noise but it was quiet overall for the two hours

looking forward to Tuesday Go St. John’s

I was stunned that Hofstra didn't have a bigger crowd for them playing at UBS

Great post SH. Hope to see more posts from you. Happy NY.

What happened to the match-up zone that was so effective, and successful?
Uh, they're known for shooting threes. A good offense against a zone is getting guys open looks by passing the ball and getting a shot off before the d has a chance to rotate.

Getting 2500 attendance is a major achievement for Hofstra, Iona, Manhattan or Fordham and all other local schools.
College basketball just doesn’t resonate in NYC.

I enjoyed my first trip to UBS yesterday very nice arena for me it’s easy I live in Franklin square went to game with my step dad just had my wife drop us off and pick us up. I agree it was on the quiet side hopefully be louder for the 2 big east games. I already bought tickets for those two games as well same exact seats guess a season ticket holder who doesn’t feel like going to UBS games. If Dubar and Thomas hit the portal we better be all over them those kids can play and shoot very well.

I'm a Franklin Square guy, a lifer and graduated Carey in 87 and my kids both graduated from there as well as my wife, both boys are at SJU. Are you a Carey guy or moved here more recently?

That's why it's important SJU be marketed as another NY pro team. Not on a par with the Knicks and Nets, but maybe a notch below. We don't want to compete with the Iona's, Hofstras, etc. of the basketball world.
