Heron

His absence proved his importance to the team. We suck without him or Ponds. Everyone loves Figgy, but he’s just not ready to get those consistent shots yet and he can’t create as well has Heron at this point.

Heron is a savage before the D can get fully set. That was never clearer than last night. He needs more aggressive takes in secondary transition, more touches in the high and low post, and less half-court drives.
The issue with Heron is that he can only drive left. When the defense forces him to his right, he struggles. I don’t know why Butler let him constantly drive to his left into the lane.
Their zone was awful. Brunk is the slowest starter in the conference, so it’s a wrap when someone gets past the guards after a ball reversal. It’s harder to to steer a player defensively in a zone..so the Butler guards had less of a chance to overplay his left.

Heron played very smart last night. He took what the defense gave him, instead of forcing it as he has done to many times in the past, Nova is not Butler, they will overplay him left and he won’t get those shots off. He’ll need to adjust and not force. Hopefully he will.

Figgy is great at cleaning up another player's mess. Follows up misses very well, gets steals off inbounds plays, and excellent in open court. From what I see, his 3 point shot is wildly inconsistent. He has not showed a mid range game, although his flat footed shot can be effective. Just doesn't have a pull up game yet. I don't know what his 3 point % is in Big East play, but seems well off his OOC statistics. I don't know if he will ever be comfortable being "the man". Some players, like Ponds, were born for that role. Others are best in more complementary roles.

I love Figgy, but he seems like more of a scavenger type...perhaps an opportunist is a better description. I use those adjectives in a positive way. I’m not sure if he has the type of game to be a Batman, but he could be a good Robin as an upperclassman.

If Heron leaves, he has to become Batman. Otherwise he can be Robin to Heron. Meanwhile, I never could get into any of the Batman movies. Adam West was the only Caped Crusader worth watching.

We are overdue for a red hot shooting game from start to finish especially at MSG where we've been very bad. We are also overdue to win 2 in a row in conference play. Last time that happened? 1/1 and 1/5 wins. Since then we have lost 2 in a row twice and at best traded W's and L's. We need to learn how to win more than one game in a row and keep momentum going.

Duke is not a member of the Big East.

At home vs. Marquette and then at Georgetown.

Point was about consecutive BE wins. Idraft was pointing out that @Creighton, @ Marquette were consecutive conference wins. Regardless of the outcome of the non conference Duke game.

Not being able to win two in a row doesn't really bode well for the tournament. Hopefully that gets sorted out.

Per @StJohn’sBball re Heron

Last Three Home Appearances
▪️ 21.3 PPG
▪️ 53.7 FG pct
▪️ 50.0 3FG pct
▪️ 88.2 FT pct

If Heron and Ponds can go over 40 points vs Nova , I like our chances . But, we still need double figure scoring from Figgy , Clark and Simon . Ponds and Heron getting to the foul line is a good sign too. Especially , late in the game , where we have wilted frequently . We tend to take ill timed outside 3’s when challenged at game’s end , when we might be better off going to the basket for the and one 3 pointer ., Refs have not been kind to Ponds and Heron for much of the season . They let our opponents reach in and don’t make the call. It’s been a problem for us . And , please , in close down to the wire games don’t let Simon be the playmaker with the ball in his hands Late . Get him under the basket where he might get a tip in . Or, Figgy following the long missss for a dunk . Let’s Go Redmen !
As an aside (and for some humor), Mike Zaun's going to really enjoy the new Jets coach.
If he doesn't win early, this guy is going to crash and burn in NY.

I try to give the Jet coaches at least one game before I want them fired.

We haven’t won a tournament game in 19 years. One win would be monumental.

You’re a better fan than I. I wait until the first 3 and out, which usually doesn’t take very long

I'd be happy with that if we had the same roster for 19 years, but this season I wanted more.
