Guys on Matt’s Radar

guess they think rolling the dice is better than not rolling the dice. Why roll the dice if you don't have to or do they have to.
Great question Bama. Guessing that Staff has been unable to add "an additional interior player" for a sundry of reasons from our guard-oriented play, to a non-starting role, to the rap about the Staff's inability to 'develop' big guys.
So, faced with that, they've chosen to "roll the dice".
It helps that our roster has some great guards and potential lethal scorers as well as great athletes--but it boils down to accepting the 'reality' of the situation.
Let's go Johnnies.
I think that is a shame. Most teams look aggressively for bigs. I think small ball is fine, but you have to have someone under the basket to do the dirty work. It's tough to look at a 6'3" guard as an enforcer.
What's sad is that this is the best talent Mullin has ever had and the best chance to advance his cause but he seems ambivalent to getting that key player leaving all the heavy lifting to Matt.
When Keita is out or flops this becomes a very small team of outside shooters.
Is ADR now a grad transfer?;)

Swish, but good try on one “mystery target” I believe.

UNLV has landed a commitment from 2018 forward Jonathan Tchamwa Tchatchoua out of Cameroon.

Whew! Great to know these ‘mystery bigs’ at least ‘exist’! Now to be so lucky to get one...

Bottom line......this is a flawed strategy. Hopefully Chris catches lightning in a bottle and we have a fun season, but I don't see a plan that is likely to bread perennial success.

My guess is we will (again) have to overcome huge rebounding deficits during conference play. Our offense will (again) experience droughts because we offer an unbalance attack with no threat in the paint. Our recruiting will have occasional successes, but with one assistant coach essentially missing in action and a head coach seemingly unwilling to grind, we will always be just one or two players short.

I want to dance this year, but I think most of us pine for a cohesive, sustainable strategy.

That's it right there. I think it's an attainable goal with better overall planning and effort from the entire staff. Just imagine if all four--or, at least 3--of the coaches were grinding like no one's business. 'Ya know....

Have you forgotten about ME? He is a 6'3" PF that many on this board were mysteriously excited abput. He can be our enforcer/rebounding machine.

Have you seen Earlington play? A handful of posters have already stated to not expect much from Earlington next season.

I agree to not expect much from Marcellus in 2018-19, but the kid is tough, determined, and has a ton of grit.
I do ‘expect’ him to contribute sooner than most of us think—maybe next season in practice. He’ll be a nice piece for us in time.
Next season, we just have to be creative to compensate for lack of ‘big’ depth.

I actually don't expect anything from him next year, or any year for that matter. Hopefully I am surprised.

I’m not sure we’ll get much for Earlington, but boy that kid plays hard.

He clearly reads the comments on here and it bothers him that we don’t expect much from him.

Salute to that kid man.

Marcellus will only be a freshman and was a two sport player. Imo, he is a great practice player addition who may develop and certainly beats having a walk on. He was 2nd team all New Jersey and NJ produces a heck of a lot of good players. He is likely the 10th man and if we have to utilize him for meaningful minutes he will be the very least of our problems.
Fans here should learn to pick their battles. This kid isn't one of them.

Amen, 72. Great kid.

Marcellus has a ton of grit. Fully expect him to, at some point, be a factor. I was high on DeSean Murray...and he's a similar body type to Marcellus.
Where there's a 'will' there's a way.

Gee, it's going to be tough replacing our big man sub, Amar.lol. I'll take my chance with this kid, obviously not afraid of contact. Let's at least give him some encouragement on this board. Hell, the season hasn't even started yet.
Just for accuracy's sake, he is listed at 6'5".
Every freshman will grow one inch by the time the official team roster is published because at St. John's we measure in socks and sneakers plus hair. It is called der Haar-Effekt.
Just for accuracy's sake, he is listed at 6'5".
Serious question,are we better with 6'11" 205, or 6'5" 240?

Your question should be are we better with 6'11" 205, or 6'9 240lb player. One will replace the other while the 6'5 kid will be waving his towel.
