Guys on Matt’s Radar
Jordan Brown mercifully ending his recruiting tomorrow. Choosing between heavy favorite Nevada, Arizona and Cal. Lots of of hours wasted in CA that could have been spent on high 3 star / low 4 star kids who could actually help us, but I digress.
So far, we’ve come up empty in CA, between Brown and J’Raan Brooks. Excluding Justin Simon, of course, who transferred from AZ.
I think you’re right, the very high 4* - 5* CA kids are fantasies.
So many high-powered Pac12 schools pouncing all over them. Dumb for us to focus on those kids.

Rivals has a report on this kid, Jwan Roberts, a 6’6” F from Killeen TX, 2019 class, saying St. John’s offered him and quotes his coach as saying Jwan would priotize St. John’s if we return the love.
Kid was defensive player of the year for 2nd straight year in his HS conference in TX.
Can’t find his HS * rating.

Hoping that recruit is Gaffney as relationship there seems to be mainly with Coach Mullin.

I hope the love he gets from matt is enough, doubt Chris would waste his precious time going to see this kid.

Watched a few fast clips on the kid; he goes after it in the paint, very athletic, great timing, and pursuit; haven’t seen an outside shot, but apparently he’s a good shooter outside the paint according to his coach. Listed at 200lbs but looks thinner.

Gaffney would be a terrific add. It would be nice if we could close on one of these kids early for a change. Inevitably, when we wait for things to "play out", they play out poorly for us. Nobody has a harder time getting out of the Friend Zone than we do.

At one point, long gone, I hoped Kofi might be an early verbal. Now doubting that happens early. Thinking now Jalen G might verbal us early. Hope so.

Whenever I hear a kid talk about needing to be shown love, I automatically assume he will eventually decommit for a silly reason.

Matt has also been primary recruiter for Gaffney and all the Rio kids. Durand Johnson transfer btw was Slice’s work and only non MA guy I believe during Chris’ tenure. Unhealthy imo, too dependent on one guy.

Do not wish to envision recruiting without Matt on Staff

Yeah, who knows. Article also said he likes our style of play. Supposedly, a rising player. So, we shall see.

Which is the number one reason for bringing in a new assistant after this season ended.

No info whatsoever. I was eventually going to replace it with a pic of our new big, but . . .

I would have preferred to see Mullin bring in a proven recruiter to better balance the skill set of his staff and for succession planning as well.

Now would you stop with that common sense crazy talk.

I think his replacement is already on staff. Whether we think it's the right decision is another matter completely, though.
