Guys on Matt’s Radar

Not that the question of whether we should hire Eric Musselman wasn't riveting, but we have an unofficial visitor today.

What's the 411 on James Bishop? Looks like a late riser based on my rudimentary internet research, and perhaps one we can land before the secret is completely out? I found one article that ranks him among the top "high motor" guys in the 2019 class. I dig high motors.

Any chance we can #LockHimUp?

At some point, it would be cool if we could start the 2019 recruiting class.

Agree WCJF. Info/speculation on potential recruits like Bishop is way more interesting than endless, repetitive speculation on what will happen if 2018-2019 isn't a success and potential staff changes that even if they occur were never believed to be in play before July.

You can never have enough guards and he would be insurance for Ponds departure and likely another guard.

I saw that article. Another lefty. Sounds like his game is a little like Ponds.

Curious, James Bishop ranked modestly higher than Jalen Gaffney in latest 247 Sports ranking, 116 vs 130 and # 129 by Rivals. Wonder if Marcus Hatten helping, and if JB is Plan B if JG drifts away?

So Bishop visited with 3 of his teammates from Team Thrill, and all received offers today. Marcus Hatten was named director of player development for Team Thrill a few weeks ago. Looks like Hatten was on the unofficial visit today. I hate that I even have to ask this, but I assume this sort of dynamic is all above board? I don't have any particular reason why it wouldn't be, just asking.

Dunno, but think positively: The NCAA will 'penalize' St. John's by wiping out it's 2015 - 2017/18 seasons. NP!
Seriously, one would think it's okay He can't be restrained from visiting a school with his players given his position.
Hoping anyway.

To be clear, i have no reason at all to think not completely legal and customary. Did not mean to sound accusatory. I guess we should be urging more of our alumni to take jobs at AAU programs.

Just reviewed 247Sports' latest rankings.
The good news is that 247 has St. John's in most of our major targets' Top 5 list.
The bad news is that 247 has UCONN with a 75% shot @ Aidan, SJU & 'Cuse with 12% each; gives FL & KY 37% each for Scottie (Nova not in their Top 5); gives UCONN & 'Cuse a 50% shot each for Kofi; G*Town and ILL get a 50% shot to get Kahlil; UCONN is given the full monty to get Tyrese Samuel; and it's a rat race for JG.
We don't make 247's Top 5 for James Bishop. Maybe that's changing.
At this point, anything can happen.
Very happy we're in the mix for most of our top guys.
Let's go Johnnies.

Most players take unofficial visits with someone connected to their AAU program. Their is nothing illegal about this. Yesterday, Mike Rice and Scottie Reynolds were on campus to watch the workout.

Count me among those who would be in favor of a Mike Rice Scottie Reynolds package deal.

Chicago, I think the good news is those percentages/ratings are often out of date and wildly inaccurate until very close to the time the kids are ready to commit; just my opinion, I've been known to be wildly inaccurate as well!.
Good point to compare it to the Rice/Lewis combo that we'll all been clamoring for, though hopefully your calling him Scottie Reynolds isn't a bad omen that he's headed to Nova :)
I’ve been known to mix-up a name or two so it is all good. I did do a double take when I read it.

I VIEW this from the 1/2 empty glass. While we are in the mix our position with all recruits is not a heavy lean or for that matter not an over 50% favoring a commitment Frankly, disappointed but do not fault the staff it is the way this business goes, you just have to be lucky that a very good for whatever reason picks us rather than the usual powerhouses

Thanks Panther & agree!
Curious: how does the team look?
Fast? Talented?
Are the workouts 'drills', or silo'd by position?
Hope Scottie was impressed!

As Paultz often says, recruiting is very fluid these days.
I'll take the 'glass half-full" in that we're in the mix and in contact.
Anything can happen.
