Good Luck, Shamorie...

I am not surprised by his quote, and I would assume that many of the players feel the same way. Here's how the game threads typically go....

When we are losing: "This team has no energy, and plays with no heart. Our roster just doesn't have that many BE caliber players"

Then 5 minutes later when we make a little comeback: "These kids just never quit! Come on, we can pull this one out"

When talking about individual players: "I'm sorry, but Trimble just can't play at this level. He is supposed to be our shooter, but he can't even do that well"

"I swear Keita has hands of stone. How does he not get that rebound? What is he even in the game for."

"Shamorie, you should come back to ST Johns, unless you want to spend your career overseas. You arent good enough for the NBA"

And then a month later when everyone leaves/transfers: "Why do we have to go thru a rebuild every 3 -4 years? Why does everyone want to leave? This is why our program is such a mess."

This is the world we live in today. I get it, and everyone is entitled to their own opinions. But it's ignorant to think that our players don't pay attention to social media and read what people say about them! It obviously has an effect on them!

Ponds has always had a "me against the world" mentality, which can definitely be a good thing at times. But yeah, that Tweet further proves that there's 0% odds he plans to return. Either he just got really frustrated reading a person's Tweets and lashed out, or he's trying to paint the St. John's fan base as his new villain to overcome. I'd think it's the former and he just got pissed off.

In a sense I definitely know where he's coming from, since I have an online following too (for my personal business) and read through hundreds of comments every day. While 95% of them are good people who offer constructive criticism, I still get really nasty/personal comments directed towards me and my wife (which is much worse). These come from miserable people, but at points they do get to me. Still, it's important to keep in perspective that trolls will always exist for ANYONE with an online following. They are trying to get a reaction out of you, so don't give them one. NBA fans would probably be a lot harsher on Ponds and the best thing to do is ignore the trolls. Had Ponds been an NBA star, that Tweet (even if deleted) would've made headline news.

Anyways, he deleted it so I don't have anything further to say. Everyone is pissed off so we all need a few days to recover. Hoping to see him get drafted.

On another note, maybe the staff will learn something from instances like these. Not sure I agree with Lavin's strict no social media policy, but there should be some sort of a middle ground.

The middle ground should be some sort of social media training. In this day and age it's more important than ever. This is these kids personal brand and they can ruin it in a minute by being ignorant. The program should have someone who offers this and on a continuing basis. No social media is not the answer. The kids need to be able to express themselves.
You know what’s good for recruiting? When your star player for the past 3 years tweets this
This kind of stuff is his reaction to our fans who somehow feel personally offended when the team doesn't play up to their standards, and subsequently express all sorts of trashing about our guys.

Agreed, between these twitter accounts and burner accounts going after players who are not paid and then that Mullin Maniacs guy tweeting at recruits a lot of bored people out there.

What I want to know is other schools fan bases are a lot worse and they actually win. So do those players react that same way? Or
is our team just made up of a certain player.
.

We could go to the Final Four and those kind of venomous people would still be there taking their mindless insults, because they are shallow wondering generalities!

That’s a good point. I know we aren’t the only fan base with a bad twitter fan base, but it does seem like to be more a problem for us than anyone else. But then again maybe I’m just looking for it more with us.

A big difference I see is a lot of these other programs have coaches that are untouchable. Duke fans are the worst but they wouldn’t dare say a word about K. Our fanbase just spews vitriol towards our staff constantly on twitter. And before people jump down my throat I’m not saying it isn’t deserved sometimes, but like Zaun said the line gets crossed often
Next question is are these people on Twitter and such even fans of SJU? Maybe they aren't and just riling up a school that they dont like?
Seems like some of the trolls have at least some interest in the program, however it's clear their main purpose is to personally-attack and stir the pot...even with coaches, family members of coaches, players, and NY media. The most shocking part is how many people engage with them and legitimize them instead of blocking/reporting. Even then though they would probably make another burner account. Clearly every fanbase has trolls but never come across any with as many as ours at SJ on Twitter. At least on here there really aren't trolls. Some may make mistakes like me, but I haven't seen any on here trolling for the sake of trolling. I think it's the same 4-5 people with tons of burner accounts blowing up our Twitter. Some of them even have their own alternate "bracket" of SJ Twitter posters and the entire point is to stir the pot personally with everyone with lots of infighting. 90% of their posts are trolling and 10% is about SJ hoops. I think a lot of people are afraid to stick their necks out and condemn them because they're scared of being targeted themselves. SJ fans need to band together. We have a huge and loyal fanbase. We need to be better myself included.
Phavre Phan or TA is someone on here. That’s their Twitter handle. They are at the center of this craziness on the hashtag. Interesting how it gets deleted mentioning them. Could be Fun on one of them. Also, with Brooks all we said was “You have a bright future here we hope you stay” and to take that as negativity shows your bias.

Fun is actually a fan of the current staff, so I doubt it's him.

That guy is such a moron. Repeatedly brags about his inside info when he doesn’t know crap. Clearly a socially repressed, insecure person who attempts to “flex his muscle” by making up stuff on the internet.

I am not being biased. I think it is creepy to be tweeting at 17 year old kids and that wasn't the only thing that was said.. And also, I am one of the few that defended you on here so I don't think I am being biased at all.

Wait, I must be missing something here. You mean to tell me that kids are actually thinking of leaving here because of crap that’s anonymously posted on social media/message boards?????

Shamorie was already leaving. But it’s a shame on his way out he’s seeing these comments being made. Social media is always gonna have negativity. It is what it is. Unfortunately we got a little contingency of fans on twitter who really suck. Hopefully Shamorie still views his time at St. John’s as a great decision. It was an up and down 3 years but he was a good player.

Star college athletes have big social media followings starting in hs. If the praise feeds their egos why shouldn't negative crap affect them also?

Well that's part of the problem with that generation, they let the feedback on social media effect their self worth. Just go out and take care of what you're supposed to take care of, and stop worrying about what people(who don't even know you) have to say about you. They are strangers, who the hell gives a flying F what they think or have to say?

Is it safe to assume that those really sucky "fans"(I use that word loosely) don't only exist in the world of St. John's basketball?

Bottom line is you need to have thick skin to play sports. Especially once you go to the pro level and people will say really nasty things to you and about you. I don't agree with people acting like that, however that's the nature of the world we live in unfortunately. I think that his tweet only hurts him in the eyes of NBA execs.
