Georgetown (MSG), Tue., Jan. 14 , 7:30p, PEACOCK

Good Morning St. John’s fans - it’s GAMEDAY- I’m excited to bring back my series of sit downs with our coaching staff called Coachcast…a fun spin on podcast.

This episode I’m joined by the Associate Head Coach of St. John’s Steve Masiello. Coach Masiello and I discuss his journey from player under Rick Pitino to coaching along side him. What he’s learned over the years, what type of coach and person is Rick Pitino and more.

We preview today’s Georgetown games, talk about recruiting this roster, Zuby, Kadary, RJ and so much more. I hope you enjoy

I also went to game. Great game we ran them off there feet. People thought I was crazy that I went.
They played hard and well that night
I did not get Covid at that March 11, 2020 Georgetown game, but yesterday I did for the first time.

Anybody come down with Covid after attending the cancelled 2020 BE Tournament??
I went as well, wife was not happy. Seemed like the crowd was a bit larger than usual and more fired up almost sensing that after that night, all bets were off.

I tried using a scarf to cover my face a bit since masks were not yet widely available or recommended. I did deny a friendly hug from one of my more demonstrative acquaintances; I believe I used the words "Are you crazy?" Had planned the day off on Thursday to go but tickets were limited to a small amount per team and I just missed the cut. On Friday, worked from home on what was supposed to be the start of a staggered office/home schedule which translated into all home. Next time I was in the office was on July 11 to pick up my stuff before my July 15th retirement. Retirement was planned for that year anyway but COVID pushed me to choose the actual date since working from home didn't mesh too well with what I did for a living and pushed me to get off the pot. Took about a day to get used to it. :)

My wife was pretty sick right around that time and with there being no testing yet available, we assume she probably had it early. Still hard to believe we lived through all that.

At least we have some nice larger than life posters of ourselves that graced Carnesecca the following season and now sit proudly in the garage.

The garage - where all crap husbands think is important goes to die.

Wise decision to sit Deivon out.
This fits for Pittino's mindset. Give Smith a chance to heal. Usher in a surprise starter like Lefty or Glover, at least giving either a shot at major minutes in a Big East game.

Finding game situations for out of rotation players very important to Rick as he decelops younger talent. Litmus tests for them to earn rotation mins, develop, improve, and be happy contributing.

Without Smith, depth at the guard position will be a factor. This game worries me. KR and Wilcher will have to step it up and give the team lots of quality minutes. Who gives them a break, Glover, Lio, Ayo, Hatten, Carter, Jackson, Jenkins, Harrison, Cook, Rowan. Ponds???? Damn WTF was in my orange juice this morning?🤪

I hope the glover injury doesn’t keep him out tonight cause it’s a great opportunity for the freshman to get some key minutes in an important game

Five things I'm looking for today:

Where can we get 25 minutes? Assuming the starters play on average 35 minutes, who can step up and play the rest? There's too many instances this year that when Vince steps on the court, the fall-off is too dramatic and the opposing team ends up on a 5-0 run in less than two minutes. Maybe this can be a breakout game for Prey or Glover. I would also hope a guy like Lefty can play 3-5 minutes around the TV timeouts.

Staying out of foul trouble. This is a game we cannot afford to have starters get two fouls in the first half, especially Aaron Scott. I expect the team to be less aggressive on defense in the first half as a result.

Hitting 30% from 3pt. Before our injuries, our margin of error was winning while shooting 1-21 from 3pt in Big East play. We cannot do that in today's game because our defense may have to take a bit of a backseat earlier in the game.

Turning them over. They are the most turnover team in the Big East. While I do think we should be less aggressive early on, we should also use this to our advantage in disrupting any runs they try to pull off on us.

Breakout games for Kadary and Wilcher. Both of these guys should have their night for different reasons. With Smith likely out, Kadary's usage may revert to something closer to his Seton Hall days. If that's his comfort zone, hopefully he can dictate the tempo like he did against Xavier and set guys up all game. For Wilcher, he's playing a point guard significantly smaller and weaker than him. Mack is a good player and will be better next year, but this is a game where Sim should not hesitate to drive to the basket on offense.

Final Prediction:
Game is within a possession or two around 8 minute mark of second half. Team turns defense on with pressing, aggressive defense, and timely shots.

Anthony Glover: 78
Michael Sweetney: 65

Good summary.

I'm not too concerned about the bigs - I think we will get what we need from Zuby, Vince and Prey.

We need RJ to have another productive points/rebounds game, and we need Kadary, Wilcher and Scott to all be more efficient offensively than they've been.

Spot some minutes for Glover and Marillac's hero Ayo.

The pattern Pitino seems to use is to not let anyone play with two fouls in the first half and use more subs. The second half is mostly starters. Whoever stands out on the bench in the first half will play some in the second half.

Will be a very tough game.

I think that we will fill the Garden tonight. We are being talked about and written about almost every day. We have the buzz right now.
I had major surgery yesterday so tonight I'm looking forward to watching our guys tonight.
This should be a good game. Cooley is a great coach but so is Rick. I don't we beat the spread but I think that we win.

Forgot to mention Ayo. but I am much more nervous about the Glover/Ayo/Lefty side of things.

Have been really impressed with their freshmen Caleb Williams. Started slow, getting 30 minutes a game in conference. Has the feel of a really solid role player. Gtown in good hands but not their night tonight.
