Georgetown (MSG), Tue., Jan. 14 , 7:30p, PEACOCK

"Wha do ya mean we?" - Spanky

As a long suffering, I'm enjoying the play very much while waiting for the inevitable guillotine to drop. You never know when, where or how and that keeps it interesting. Right now a right shoulder is a favored potential culprit. I won't get my hopes up till about 7 pm selection Sunday.
Totally get it.....I'm just starting to come out of my defensive crouch and waiting for my beloved Johnnies to kick me right in the nuts...😂

No opposing fan weekend traveling contingent for this one which helped last Saturday. You will get the Gtown Alum who live and/or work in the area.

St. John’s contingent will also be down slightly as it is not a Saturday night, but hey it will still be a very nice pro St. John crowd especially compared to recent past years.
Georgetown when they are good gets a decent showing at the Garden (I am talking post-John Thompson II and Ewing/Mourning). Back in the heyday for them, they attracted lots of fans from all over.

They have a decent amount of Alum in the NYC area, but less than some other schools.

Tomorrow night, I'm thinking 12,000-13,000, with 15% quiet Georgetown fans.

The last game I went to before the pandemic was Georgetown vs. St. John's BET, then the next day we were ahead of Creighton at the half in the quarterfinals, BET ended due to Covid, so technically I say we won the tournament that year.

Anyway, we came back to beat Georgetown the night before (March 11, 2020), all hell broke loose thereafter.

I enjoyed it because of a very loud obnoxious GTown fan next to me, kept giving me the business all night, until we pulled it out. His Georgetown daughter next to him was very polite. [I didn't yet know the 114 crew, or else I might have been with them instead]

Since rivalry w GT has faded, 10-11 thousand seems about right. As GT improves and Johnnies continue the recruiting of portal 24 year olds, the juice may return to this game.

That's not a great number....Always feel you need around 13-15k in order to get the garden crowd noise buzz

Georgetown has a huge presence in NYC. They have more alumni here than D.C...

Attendance has fluctuated between high teens and below 10k. Depends on the year.

That said, the Ticketmaster non-resale page is not promising. Lower bowl is not close to selling out (+/- 350 seats are available behind the student section alone).

Tuesday night is a tough spot, but looks to be a disappointing turnout for a team that's still on the verge of being in the top 25.

“and Johnnies continue the recruiting of portal 24 year olds.” Unnecessarily snarky, Paultzie, no?
The landscape of college bball has changed. We all pine for freshmen who stayed 4 years and grew with the program. Jeez, Mark Jackson couldn’t start as a freshman. But Rick’s in his 70’s and he has to win NOW!

Suspect the Saturday UCONN blowout may have discouraged local Gtown Alumni from coming out on a Tuesday night. Hope we can at least get to 12K.

My bookie Mug nails the number again.

I had figured a bit higher based on the GT game ESPN win probability as compared to the Nova one, but Vegas Always Knows.

Wouldn't surprise me if we win by 10 but I fully expect it to be a rock fight for about 30 minutes before that. With upset potential also.
You hedged your bet there Counselor Shaka. 🤔

12 or 13 k not bad on a Tuesday night, but yes have to continuously be a winning program for 14-15 and we’ll get there.🤞
We're getting there, after the big win Saturday night, the casual New York college BB fan is getting into St. John's again.

My barometer: I got texts from some friends that are not huge fans, checking in with me after Nova. Once these folks start showing up to games, we'll pretty much pack the Garden like in days of Old.

Despite the sizable spread, I am not overly confident about this one. Georgetown seems like a formidable for to me and I expect a very tight competitive game. Smith's injury is a big hole, he is a unique talent and we have no player on our roster who brings what he brings to the table. I definitely think we can win, but I doubt it will be easy. Looking for good play by all our main cogs and some of our signature defense and rebounding to take us over the top in this one.

If there is a game where Simeon Wilcher physically dominates his counterpart in the Big East, this should be it. Wilcher is 6'4"/190 and Mack is 6'2"/175. I really want to see his aggression that he showed against Xavier.

Also, Georgetown is shooting only 32% from 3pt for the year, 10th in the BE only ahead of us. They're also the worst turnover team in the conference, averaging 13.5.

The spread is fair.

I have no comfort level with this game. It's a letdown game, we are shorthanded, Georgetown is going to be motivated at the Garden, and Cooley is going to ugly things up. On paper we should win by 10. In real life I have anxiety about this game.
I think our physical play, length, O rebounding will disrupt this talented, but relatively young team and we win by 5 or so. Getting ahead of myself, but after Creighton loss I felt we could possibly get on six game roll beating Butler, Xavier, Nova, GT, SH & Xavier again. Still feeling that, but thankfully don’t gamble.

This is a self deleting post if we lose one of those.

I'd also remind people that the UConn-Georgetown game was more of a 18 point game than a 8 point one. Garbage time scoring lowered it. They aren't the dumpster fire they once were, but even with Smith out, I really don't think we should expect let down by default. Good night for Kadary to win us one.

I watched the replay of the UConn/GT game today.

Three quick takeaways:
1) We should dominate them on the boards, they don't team rebound, a lot of their guys just watch the shot after it goes up. I think it's at least +15 differential.

2) While they are not a small team they dont have the height of typical GT teams.

3) Mack is good going to the hole on screens. He dips his shoulder well, it will be interesting to see if he can get into the chest of Wilcher. Would've like to see Smith in this game but it's better he heals up rather than worsen the injury.
