Georgetown (MSG), Tue., Jan. 14 , 7:30p, PEACOCK

In the 2nd half, the hungry masses rejoiced at the turning point of the season as Kadary dove to the floor and successfully corralled a loose ball. Well done Mr. Richmond...well done!

2nd time in 2 outings Sim redeems himself from a less than pedestrian outing with late game heroics. A formula I could get used to.

See you in Newark for the Hall's Superbowl 25'.

Liked Prey's contribution a lot. Has some smarts to make up for not being an elite athlete. Tipped some rebounds to teammates when he couldn't grab them. Also thought Lefty's three was big in the first half when nothing was going right. G Town went right at Lefty on defense. He is going to have to get stronger to compete in the notoriously physical Big East, but he has time for that. A game very few SJU teams in recent memory would have been able to win. The Big East is a dogfight. Can't take a night off, and, against the best of the conference, can't take a play off.
Lefty needs foot speed/lateral quickness.

Real fun game to go to.

Some thoughts:
-- Crowd was legit 85-15 STJ. We desperately wanted to be loud this game, and every chance we had, Georgetown came hit a shot. But it was definitely louder and more intense than these games at MSG have been in the past.
-- It's so refreshing to be the team that knows how to win the game late. In my experience as a St. John's fan, the closest vivid memory of that was basically STJ giving the ball to Marcus Hatten. You can never ever ever count this team out, no matter what.
-- I am most impressed that we ended up only losing the rebound battle 44-38, and winning the offensive rebound 15-13. In the first half, we were out-rebounded 26-10 (!) and offensive rebounds 9-3. To make up that deficit shows a monster effort.
-- Kadary should've had a double-double tonight. Although he can be a little frustrating on some possessions, he gives us a weapon we needed last year to attack the zone. He found a lot of guys under the rim who missed lay-ups. As someone who defends him on this board and in real life, I am not sure he exactly dove for that ball. Looked more like he fell over it. But I'll take it! He deserves our support.
-- I think its time for the Greek kid to get more minutes. His shot looks like the best on the team, and he was in better position defensively than Glover. I do think Glover should get more run during this stretch with Smith not fully healthy.
-- It's also time for Vince's minutes to go to Prey. It's so predictable at this point for him to come in and not make the momentum building plays. He's too slow under the rim and shys away from contact. Prey made a huge tip late in the game.
-- Sim's made huge plays down the stretch of these last two games. Hopefully he can bring that focus for a full 40 minutes.
-- I'm happy they finally showed an alum on the jumbotron -- Dwight Hardy! I also had no idea the ESPN CEO was a law school alum, but they showed him as well.

A gritty win we lose in year's past.
Vince defense is solid. His ability to guard the low block without having to front the offensive player is a huge advantage. Size matters

I want to see more of Prey, definitely. Think he will be a real stud. But, while Vince missed or failed to take a few dunks that would have been impactful in the end, he did get a key rebound and make a key block in the late minutes. He has speed, quickness and talent, and of course size. I think he has a role, maybe just not at crunch time right now.

Great win! Still lots of upside. This may never be a great shooting team, but we do have some guys who can shoot. Just wait for the shots to start falling. Lots of time to improve before the dance.

Zuby was a foul machine last season. One of my concerns coming into this season is whether and how long he could stay on the floor without fouling out.
Sorry for the truncated post. Hit the button too soon I was going to give credit to Pitino’s player development of Zuby who defends and rebounds with abandon while not fouling out. Truly amazing.

Must confess the first half of this game at MSG brought back a memory of nightmare loss to GT in David Russell’s freshman year I believe. We scored nine points in first half. I had court side seats, but could not take more of the slaughter and left. My Mean Gene moment 🫣

On way out I bumped into Dan Rather, a big GT fan, who also left, but in far better mood than me.

January 6, 1982 Russell’s junior year.
41-9 halftime deficit. Patrick Ewing’s MSG debut. Hoya Paranoia was born.
Chris Mullin was a freshman and the only time he was held scoreless in his collegiate career.

I listened to that on the radio. If I recall correctly, Ewing came out and blocked or goaltended the first 3 or 4 StJ shots, to intimidate and set the tone for the game...

Watched the highlights back, still thrilled about that win today.

There is definitely truth to the whole "win ugly" idea, but I will say as a fan, it is very satisfying to watch a team work their way back into a game brick by brick (figuratively and maybe literally too lol) with just hard work, suffocating defense, and attacking the paint relentlessly. It makes me a proud fan to watch the team representing this school battle that way.

It also feels like MSG is a true homecourt advantage for us again and I love it. I felt it in the arena on Saturday, but even watching on TV last night, the crowd got loud when we got back in the game, and it rattled their team. It especially seemed to rattle their young guard Mack, who I am told is a sophomore but looks to be about 12.

These types of wins are huge. I think we all share an appropriate amount of anxiety that the tournament committee is going to flip the bird to the Big East once again this year, so it is vital that we avoid these hiccups and we did. Now we go to Jersey to take on the resume killers themselves. Team needs to treat it like a championship game. The Seton Hall games are in their own way just as important as the UConn/MQ games. Because a loss to SH completely alters our resume, just in the way we don't want.

I was at that game and remember exactly where I was seated.

We were all anxious to get our first look at Patrick Ewing who was heralded as the next Bill Russell. On our very firs possession, Ewing settled in the middle and spread his arms in a defensive posture. They appeared to stretch to cover the width of the entire lane. I immediately thought of those cheesy Godzilla movies and the image of Mothra spreading its wings. I was very worried, and as it turned out, it was not needless.

Boy I hated Ewing.. and the Hoyas.. and John Thompson, who liked to stir the us vs them pot and fan the flames. And their smug superiority complex fans.

Today I like their fans. They can still be assholes in their 30s and 40s, but they do overpay for seats on Stubhub.

Last night was... nice

Marillac, this year is putting the top local ballers on notice.

You want to win a championship? No more are the day where you gotta go to KU, UK, Duke etc....

We got a championship caliber coach right here in NYC.
Come home and we'll welcome you back with open arms Ian Jackson and the PG who went to Indiana (Boogie Fland???) among others.
Boogie actually followed Johnny Clamchowder to Arkansas but totally agree and hope we get some of those kids on the rebound next year. We are gonna need some guards for sure. In terms of Jackson, unlikely as the amount of NIL money he’s reportedly getting is enough to buy an entire condo complex. Just ask Bill Bellicheat about Carolina’s NIL cash flow as he’s pursuing both Texas quarterbacks. 🤪
