Georgetown (MSG), Tue., Jan. 14 , 7:30p, PEACOCK

I was at that game and remember exactly where I was seated.

We were all anxious to get our first look at Patrick Ewing who was heralded as the next Bill Russell. On our very firs possession, Ewing settled in the middle and spread his arms in a defensive posture. They appeared to stretch to cover the width of the entire lane. I immediately thought of those cheesy Godzilla movies and the image of Mothra spreading its wings. I was very worried, and as it turned out, it was not needless.

Boy I hated Ewing.. and the Hoyas.. and John Thompson, who liked to stir the us vs them pot and fan the flames. And their smug superiority complex fans.

Today I like their fans. They can still be assholes in their 30s and 40s, but they do overpay for seats on Stubhub.

Last night was... nice
I was at that game as well and sat there stunned as what was taking place, complete annihilation and there would be no come back. As the Hoyas start winning, their fan’s a$$hole personalities will shine through. Many predict they are a year away, agree if Sorber sticks around. Then the Hoya hatred will be rekindled.😂

I am happy that some shots fell for Scott - as I've posted for weeks I think he's the X-factor that gets this team over the top in a big spot (Villanova and Georgetown games do not count as a big spot and we were fortunate to win both of them).

What concerns me is that I have never seen a team with so many players whose shots are just broken. I can't criticize too much with regard to Kadary; his shooting from range was terrible coming in so I can understand how folks thought there was little to lose by trying to fix it. Except that in the process they broke his free throw shooting and did some damage to his mid-range as well.

Scott came in with nice form and good numbers and now it is totally random whether his shot goes in or not. One of the 3s last night he missed by 3 feet, it just happened to hit the backboard and go in. I think there were a couple of others where he missed everything by a country mile as well. Good shooters don't do that; sometimes it doesn't go in but there's a difference between that and throwing a dart at the dartboard.

Wilcher's form isn't broken, but the shots don't go in enough either.

Thus far the only one who's immune is Glover, and I suspect that's because he has the RJ-style immunity of supreme confidence in his offense. That may be the answer to both Scott and Wilcher, they are thinking and aiming instead of shooting and they need to play more freely.

But the key to this team winning big games is going to be better shooting. Everything cannot be a slog against less- talented teams.

If look at Scott's game log from last year, while he did shoot 37%, he did have some streakiness to it.

12/10 through 12/30, four games, went 1/9
1/17 through 1/25, three games, went 3/15
2/15 through 3/6, six games, went 5/18
3/14 through 3/23, four games, went 2/13

I'm not sure if this exercise made me feel better or worse. lol

Players that most stood out for me last night were Scott and RJ. One thing I don't really understand though is- why didn't Pitino give Zuby more rest breaks? I thought Prey did decent in spot duty and Vince as well.

I also think Lefteris can develop into something special. Any news on when Brady comes back?

I think the one player we cannot manage without is Zuby. After that either RJ or Kadary is the next least-replaceable and it's probably RJ since you can play Smith for Kadary.

But the difference maker for this team is a 4th player who can defend, rebound and shoot and that has to be Scott. Glover does nothing but shoot. Liotopoulos same thing with less physical maturity and ability. Wilcher should be a shooter but doesn't have the size for the rest. It's got to be Scott.
Agree with you that Scott at this point is a glue guy on this team. I don’t think we’ve seen enough of with Glover or Liotopoulos to what they are or aren’t or what they can or will be.

The key guys, RJ, Scott, Kadary (w Zuby having to sit w foul trouble) if you looked at box score from last night played mega minutes, a testament to team conditioning. RJ being healthier re shins is obvious plus, but pleased he has plenty in tank down the stretch this season.

We've seen more than enough to know who they are now.

Glover has physical and offensive ability but needs to learn to share the ball, play defense, and rebound. He has made some progress on all of those things but (stop me if I've said this before) there's more to the game than shooting which is why he's on the bench.

Liotopoulos is a pure shooter, but unlike Glover he has no athleticism and thus far has no ability to defend or rebound. So he is also on the bench except when we run out of players or Pitino gets frustrated or he's searching for someone to make at least one shot.

We don't know who they will be - Glover clearly has the tools to be a player, and Liotopoulos needs to improve enough at the other things that it allows him to stay on the floor to do the thing he's good at. Don't see that happening at all for Liotopoulos this season, and expect continued spot duty for Glover, maybe some expansion of that as the season goes on.

But if you don't defend, don't rebound, and don't execute the offensive game plan (whichever interpretation of "offensive" you prefer), you aren't seeing the floor very much.

This Ed Cooley quote has me fired up

For St. John’s not to be ranked, first and foremost, let’s talk about that,” Cooley began. “I don’t know who some of these voters are, I don’t know who has a vote, but you’re blind. Wake up, you’re blind. That’s one of the best teams we’ve played all year, I don’t know if there’s a close second. This team is really, really good. They have some dynamite players, they defend at an elite level, they try to speed you up, very, very good. So for everybody that’s behind that iron mic that has a vote, wake your ass up.”

Loved the minutes from Lefty last night. Bigger than Sim. Good chance he’s one of our best shooters as well. Absolutely knows where he is supposed to be. Would like to see him get similar burn to what prey has been getting. Know it’s not easy keeping everyone involved and happy.
