Georgetown 1st Game

Other than last year, Harrison never shows up against Gtown

He's never showed up @GTOWN. he played well at the garden once as you said, but I don't think he's ever scored more than 4 points at the verizon center

TERRIBLE GAME WE DO NOT DESERVE AN NCAA BID

Relax. Many were worried we would drop both Xavier and gtown games. We got one of two and are fine. The concern right now is getting all over guys healthy for march. Give the players the week off and sit obekpa Saturday and win without him because SH will be Gibb-less.

We need to go 4 - 1 in the last 5 Jack. Otherwise everything depends on our performance in BE Tournament. We can do that if we can get healthy.

I don't think that is true at all. If we finish 9-9 we will be fine in my opinion because the bubble continues to thin out.

That's assuming that the other bubble from the power conferences don't come up with some quality wins against ranked teams which they have more of an opportunity to do than we do.

We just gotta take it one game at a time. Health is a priority. I'm a bit baffled by tonight. We were up 19-17 and looked fine and then we just collapsed. Strange. I don't know what to make of it but let's just move forward

Big part of the break down was the Technical on Jordan because the ref did not bail him. It looked that way from my angle

This game reminded me of the butler loss. We got 3 in a row after that terrible loss. So don't get too down! Go SJU

Team will continue to tease us. Will we be disappointed or pleasantly surprised? We'll know soon enough. Hold serve at home & beat M'Q on road. Tough task, but good teams do that.

Our players have to learn to zip it in games. However, that T was slightly overshadowed by Harrison and Jordan shooting 1-17 and our perimeter defense returning to a feminine wave at a distance of 5 feet or more.

Harrison is hurt. Getting on him for never playing well against Georgetown really doesn't apply to tonight's game. The kid is obviously hurt.

On that topic, I would have preferred CO and DLO to have been rested for the final 12 minutes. If the others brought us within striking distance, then you can put them back in. Otherwise, why risk further aggravating the injuries? (I think CO did).

I can't stand Georgetown. They are really chippy. Hopefully we get a better whistle at MSG (doubt it).

I am a Lavin detractor, but agree with Desco on tonight's game. He didn't hurt us from the sideline tonight. That said, we are painfully thin and the 2014 recruiting class remains unforgivable. As for Georgetown's 2014 class......they (Copeland, White, Peak) finished with a combined 30 pts. and 16 rebounds.

Hopefully these seniors can still get to the dance. The Seton Hall game won't be easy. Anyone who has that marked down as an automatic win is mistaking. If CO is not healthy, Delgado will be a problem.

One last point. After three years of thinking Christian Jones could become a contributor on this level. I now realize he will not. I think both Jones and the program will benefit from parting ways.

It was a bad sign when we were down 10 at the half and they were 0 for 10 from 3. They proceeded to hit their first 7 threes in the second half.

Get three of the next five and win one BET game.

Jordan and Harrison need to get back on track at home.

9-9 is too risky, IMO, and I'm not a fan of having to win a game in the conference tournament to get in. Unless, one of those 9 wins is against Villanova, then I don't want any part of going 9-9.

Don't get wrong.... I understand what you're saying, and I do believe 9-9 and a win in the Big East tournament will get us in (based, on our strong RPI). Personally, I'd like to be 10-8, and sitting firmly in the (NCAA) tournament going into the Big East tournament.

MJ, I agree - relying on the BET with this teams history is dicey at best. Maybe this is the year we witness a change.

Despite the fact that we disagree frequently, for the most part you are fair, balanced and passionate about rooting for our team.

I don't understand parts of your post.. First off, it's so predictable that as soon as we get thumped, the same old garbage about next year's roster gets tossed into a thread about one game. All it takes is convincing loss for a horde of posters to revert to "we ain't a tourney team and next year looks bleak."

When do we beat ANYBODY when Jordan and Harrison go a combined 1-15 from the field? Georgetown has a long history of ganging up on our best offensive weapons and letting anyone not named (Berry and Mullin) or (X and Y) to score points. It's a good game plan. We didn't have enough guns in 85 to counter that, and we didn't have enough guns last night, except that Jordan and Harrison weren't just contained, they were snuffed out.

Sometimes a team just has your number, or matches up well. Sometimes it's just for a night. Georgetown spanked Nova, and Nova returned the favor in the rematch. Providence swept Georgetown, we swept Providence. Georgetown beats us in their building - so we cry and go home, or do our guys suck it up and smack Georgetown in the Garden? Hopefully our guys do that, even as our fans cry and are ready to give up.

I agree about Christian Jones. He should have played D2 and been a 12 point scorer, if he is even capable of that. His SJU career is a washout, and it isn't because of lack of opportunity. For those who would think he is this year's Max Hooper, misused by Lavin, Mr. Max is playing 18 minutes a game, averaging about 5 points, and also averaging 0.2 assists per game and 0.2 steals, and 0.0 blocks. HE's made it to the line all of 7 times in 27 games. But then I digress.

Suck it up. We won one of two tough road games, and although two of two would have gilded the path to a tourney bid, they predictably lost away at Georgetown. Season over? No. Tough road ahead? Of course. Should a Johnnies fan ever eat spicy food on game days? Never.

We looked like a team playing its 3rd game in 7 days last night. Paired with a matchup against the most physical team in the Big East, who hadn't played in 8 days, in a building that has just been treacherous for us...and we were probably down 15 before the game started.

I don't know if there is anything that could have been done to change the outcome, and that's fine. It was a house money game under difficult circumstances. It appears that there will be no surplus with this team this year, will come right down to the wire.

With this being said, it is curious with a tired team, on the road, with two of its top six players clearly banged up, that SJU only used one timeout last night, with 55 seconds left in the first half. I understand staff is seemingly contractually required to save timeouts to break up our own runs around the 8-minute mark of the second half - :cheer: - but when GTown goes 13-0 to take us from +4 to -9 in about 4 minutes, that's usually a decent time to break up the action!

Have to give credit to JT3. He understands probably better than any coach we've faced the last four years that if you cut off our head - Harrison - we're going to have a tough time winning the game. Granted there just seems to be a lid on the rims in DC for him, but GTown makes a point from the tip of being physical with him and focusing on taking him away.

On to the homestand that will make or break the season.

Was at the game last night. Team shot awful. I thought they had a run in them but it never happened. I live in DC and watch a lot of Gtown games. They can look very good and then not so good at other times. We caught them on a very good night where we played bad. They are very long and excellent rebounders, a tough match up for us, however, I would not be surprised if we beat them at MSG. I was going to be very happy if we took one of either at X or Gtown and we did that, so let's move on to the Hall and our next 3 at home. The table is set for a strong finish. Hope they don't disappoint.

I know Dee is banged up, but Trawick has always given him problems.

Also agree I have no idea why Dee and Obekpa played at all in the last 6 or 7 minutes. The outcome was never in doubt and Lavin has Dee out there driving to the basket taking a beating. Makes no sense to me.

Finally non coach speak

@SJUCoachLavin: We caught them on a night they played extremely well, and we played very poorly. #SJUBB

Well said 15. The wild cards now appear to be having Dee & Chris relatively healthy to hold serve at home. When Dee is scoring, he opens things up for others. Without CO at even 80%, we are an accident waiting to happen down low. Additionally, on an offensively challenged team, especially in half court, getting a solid contribution from Jordan is a must. His enigmatic play, especially when he has to fill a void when Harrison struggles, absolutely kills us.

I never take any team/game for granted, but if training staff feels Obekpa could benefit from sitting out Saturday, I would go that route. We need him playing at a high level facing Xavier & GT, teams obviously with strong interior play. Beat Seton Hall!

Not surprised or even concerned per se about the loss but I am both at the way we played. Bad shooting is bad shooting and it happens but the unforced turnovers and porous defense point to a very unfocused and uncommitted effort. Contrary to what many think, to me this was not a house money game this was an opportunity to separate a little bit from the bubble pack and the team just didn't seem to treat it that way. I read some of the comments concerning the SHU game and have to laugh; I don't know how anyone can predict what this team will do and I believe SHU, even without Gibbs, will come in here tough. NY kids in NY are not going to lay down IMO. Yeah, Whitehead and Carrington are not playing well but both are more than capable. I believe this will be an extremely tough game and if we come out as we did last night could be disastrous. I don't think we will but..............................

I think most sensible posters believe no BE game is a gimme, especially a rivalry contest. Glad we are at home, but agree a replication of last night's performance won't cut it. This is really the Jim Valvano, "Survive & Advance" time.

Lastly, I do mourn the loss of Keith Thomas, Adonis & am frustrated by those current roster voids. Staff is responsible for that, but it is what it is. There's no sense beating it to death. (Not you) Beat the Hall!

You know I agree completely. I shouldn't have said this game was house money a few days ago. It was a great opportunity to put ourselves easily in the tournament for the time being. The lack of urgency was not good to see, it's almost as if Lavin told them we only needed 1 of these 2 road wins, and now that they had one they weren't into this game.

But as SJU15 said, Georgetown was well rested at home, and we were playing our 3rd game in 7 days, maybe that contributed to some of the tired legs, carelessness, and bad turnovers. It is over and done with and we gotta start looking at seton hall, but this game was ultimately a missed opportunity because IMO gtown wasn't even that good last night we best ourselves more than anything

@SJUCoachLavin: I thought Georgetown was razor sharp and hitting on all cylinders tonight. The balanced scoring attack was an indication of that. #SJUBB

@SJUCoachLavin: Even defensively, the way they were able to limit our transition and contain our leading scorers. #SJUBB

@SJUCoachLavin: Based on the way Georgetown performed tonight I think the time off helped them. #SJUBB

@SJUCoachLavin: We caught them on a night they played extremely well, and we played very poorly. #SJUBB

@SJUCoachLavin: We have to turn our energies to Seton Hall and the upcoming three game homestand. #SJUBB

@SJUCoachLavin: We are banged up and hopefully over the next couple days we can get guys closer to full strength. #SJUBB

@SJUCoachLavin: We are going to have our hands full on Saturday against a dangerous Seton Hall team. #SJUBB

Couldn't agree more, Paultz. Has never been more clear that objective #1 is to speed the game up in transition, on both ends. When game turns half-court we have exposure areas, just as much defensively as offensively. When we are running up and down, difficult for most teams to hang with our quickness and variety of players who can finish and protect the rim.

If and when game does turn half-court, we have to see more Branch. Don't understand what staff doesn't see here. He's far from perfect player, but staff has always seemed focused on his shortcomings as opposed to what he can do. After two beautiful first-half assists last night, he makes one turnover and gets yanked. Meanwhile others allowed to turn it over and chuck misses and play through. In any event, Branch is by far the best and most consistent facilitator on the team, and you need that in the half-court. No two games are the same, use your personnel as flow of game dictates.

The Obekpa decision is massive on Saturday, with a Monday turnaround. Although at least we have remainder of week off prior to Georgetown. If he's healthy enough to provide plus value, play. If he's not able to give more than he did last night, get him as much rest as possible before Xavier. Decision will have to be made for him though, kid is clearly a gamer. Even as he could barely walk was waiving off a sub last night. Appreciate the heart, but staff/training staff has to understand that beating Seton Hall isn't going to mean much if we don't split with X/GTown the remainder of week, and healthy as possible CO gives us best chance to do that.

I'm loving those tweets by Lavin. He seemed to make it clear that he is going to let these banged up guys get rest, which is reassuring.

He hit the nail on the head with how Georgetown played us, and it is going to be up to him to come up with gameplan next time we play them. Because if we win our next two home games against SH and Xavier, we will be playing for a tournament bid IMO against Georgetown, assuming we don't lose to MQ after that.

Georgetown does appear to have a nice core for the future

@JonRothstein: Isaac Copeland is "the next one" at Georgetown. Cut from same cloth as Jeff Green + Otto Porter. 12, 9 boards, + 3 blocks vs. St. John's.
