Fire Lavin!

Compared to Norm ,Lavins tenure has been a success. Compared to our expectations it hasn't. This year isn't over yet. That said, I'm not saying he should be fired.

Lavin was known quantity when he got here.......Better record than most.,.had prostate cancer second year,....his players are now in third year......still can make big tournament...Too early to give him heave -ho.....Agree with earlier poster that we went into decline when Lou cancelled Calipari..Matter of fact,we've been slow decline ever since Red Storm replaced Redmen.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion about Coach, but if SJU were to fire Lavin, then who is going to come in here and be more successful?

There is not a long list out there. We are not going to get a coach from a major university to leave and come here. We lost our chance to have a real coach at SJU in 2004 when Louie killed the Calipari deal which was locked up and ready to go. Had that happened, we wouldve had a national title and a 12,000 seat on campus arena. Calipari would be coaching the Knicks by now but the table wouldve been nicely set for his successor and we would be doing great still. The idea of firing Coach is fine but who do the arm chair AD's suggesting this think we should get to replace him? Please dont tell me some assistant from a big school who has never been a head coach. We went that route with Norm Roberts and it was an absolute disaster. If Lavin is replaced we would need someone who has a track record of winning as a D-1 coach. Again, my point is that the list is not long.....

As frustrating as this season has been, and I will admit I am as frustrated as anyone, the truth is Coach Lavin in 4 years has us on the bubble for the NCAAs plus an NCAA appearance in 2011.

Our last coach didnt even come in the same hemisphere as far as success as Coach Lavin....so it can be worse.....those who think it can be better....well, i would love to hear names.

So you think Lavin has been successful? Year one wasn't his players so he doesn't get all the credit for that. This year is still up in the air, if we make theNCAAs then we are tending in the right direction otherwise I do not think Lavin is a success. This is the year he stated would be the year. Year 3 with his players.

We were a 6 seed with wins against two of the # 1 seeds, a 2 seed and a 3 seed (who went on to win the national title) in year one. It was our first NCAA birth in 9 years. This year we are on the bubble. Next year we will be in the mix for an NCAA bid barring a debilitating injury. Compared to the previous regime OR any other regime who would consider coming here.....that is SUCCESSFUL, especially at St. Johns.

People are delusional thinking this is a marquee program. How many weeks have we spent in the Top 25 the last 13 years? How many NCAA games have we won? I do not want to kill the program but we cannot just go into any campus and pluck another school's coach away....St Johns is not an attractive job and lets call the last 20 years of Redmen basketball exactly what they are....2 great seasons with Jarvis, one good season with Lavin, two other average seasons with Fran and MJ where we made the NCAAs and other than that a lot of embarrassment and bad fortune. We had the most underachieving/disappointing recruiting class in college bball history with Felipe and Zendon....the Pittsburgh scandal....the Norm tenure.....it hasnt been fun being a SJU fan...so to answer your question, based on the last 20 years it can be a lot worse.

Feeling disgruntled and immature, so I decided to post on this thread just to get it on the top again.

FIRE SLICK STEVE!!!

Anyone who disagrees needs to put down the kool aid and step away from the keyboard.

Those of you waiting for the season to be over until you judge him.......WAKE UP.......the season is OVER!

This guy is a hack.

That means starting all over again. Are you willing to take a chance on an unheralded coach and wait another 3 to 4 years to see if it works out? And I say "unheralded" because as Avon said, there is no high power, hugely successful coach who will leave his current position to come here.

I for one am not willing to start over again.

Yes, I am absolutely willing to start over. It would be best to let Steve go at the end of this year.

To me, it is painfully obvious that Lavin is not going to win here (or anywhere) and will serve endless frustration. The line-up, timeouts, lack of Xs and Os will not go away. If he has not learned by now, he won't.......and we will pay. You will see it eventually.

It's the Curse of Chief Blackjack.

Jarvis ran this program into the ground and Norm cleaned it up but was never going to take us to the promise land. So if you want to compare Lavin to those years than yes he is a success.

If we make the tourney this year then I would say the season is a success. That is to be determined. Making assumptions about being a NCAA team next year is a little premature with everything we have experienced in the past with transfers and players leaving early.

I love what Lavin brings to the program in terms of recruits and exposure and the team has looked great recently except for obviously the Xavier game.

On the last point I would think that a lot of coaches would want to coach SJU. It is NYCs only major D1 program and that says a lot.

To summarize my point I don't think we should be satisfied with making the tourney every 4 years. I've been following the program since the Mullin years and season ticket holder since late 90's so if this is as good as it gets (getting to the tourney every 3/4 years) I would just assume routing for Another team.

Xavier has been regular in the tourney in the last decade. There is no reason that SJU can't be at least that successful. Just my opinion.

SJU is a sleeping giant. When we are good, the "suits" join the students, alumni and die-hards at the garden and create an awesome atmosphere. It is an attractive job for those who understand the full potential.

I say get PJ here for next year.

Not making the tournament this year is a HUGE failure. I don't think anyone could argue that Lavin was the worst coach in the Big East this year. I am disappointed that many are using Norm and Jarvis comparisons to rationalize a Lavin vote of confidence. Our standards should be higher than Norm and Jarvis.

Marquette will be tough. Buzz Williams is a real basketball coach.

PJ will be 65 soon & is financially set for life. You will have a better chance of getting Red Auerbach.

He is not interested in returning to college game period. Dream on if you like.

I disagree
I really believe that, if St John's called, PJ would be interested
Having said that, I don't think it would ever happen

Fire Lavin just because we lost to DePaul the first time.

And Louie lost to mighty Niagara the season we went to the final four. Should he have been fired because of that one loss? Certainly not and believe me that loss was 10x more shocking that our loss to Depaul this season.
The fact you wrote what I quoted shows you have some sort of agenda or hatred for Coach Lavin.
Personally, I find this topic very distasteful but it is not a violation of forum rules so the thread will stay.
However, I ask that you please be respectful in your posting as we all know Coach is not going to get fired this season as there is no reason to fire him.
You want to say the team underachieved, could play better ball, could have won anywhere from 1-5 more games, I certainly accept such an opinion. But please lets all get off the topic of coach being fired as there is just no merit or substance to such a topic.

We are on the bubble, back from the dead and will be a 20+ win team and going to a post season tourney not named CBI. When compared to the past 4 coaches and their records over the past 20 years, our wizard should be considered for Big East Coach of the year right behind Jay Wright and Map of Italy. This thread was as premature as my ejaculations.

That was perfectly said.

I can't believe this thread is still in use.

This guy is just trolling the board at this point...It's completely obvious to everyone and he has zero credibility at this point
