Dunn Visit

I, too, would prefer another big. That said, the writing is on the wall.....good chance Dunn is a Johnny very soon.

I sincerely hope that is not the case. Dunn is in no way a substitute for a talented 2020 PG. Not in the least.

Did not mean PG & Dunn is not one btw.

Shooting guard neither. Dunn not a substitute for landing better players. The talent level has to improve. Dunn is a SG that had to improve his shooting a ton. If he’s a stop-gap for depth, I’m fine with that, but we need next level Big East players and Dunn is not that.

Of course

Many seem still under the misconception that this is easy, that the players we all want to see here will appear simply because that’s what we want. It’s not and they won’t. It certainly appears we finally have a staff willing to do the work required to turn this around, how long remains to be seen.

It's going to take a while for SJU to be recognized by skilled recruits as a possible landing point. New coach, new style, etc.

I’m sorry fellas, but I’m not buying Dunn as a legitimate Big East option in lieu of landing some better players. We didn’t step down to division 2 and our expectations should not be lowered THAT much because of a coaching change, especially one with the record of Mike Anderson..

With all due respect to any posters who feel differently, I have more confidence in the staff to put together a roster than any of you. I am genuinely curious, when is the last time you saw Dunn play? Do you have any insight into the role he is expected to fill? I assume I have seen him play because I saw Ponds several times in high school but I don’t remember him so I have no opinion on him. As for expectations, like I posted previously, I will wait to see the product on the court for a season or two before I decide whether they are met or not. It Is hard as a fan to be starting over AGAIN but we are and it is a process. As with all the previous coaches I will give Anderson time and not hold him to a different standard simply because the previous six coaches were what they were.

Seems to me we are over analyzing staff's potential use (or non-use) of the last scholarship. I haven't seen Dunn play in person and would not presume to question staff's judgment if they think he will be worth a schollie. It's not going to make or break the program. I will wait and see whether it's Dunn, Conteh or save schollie for 2020; in any case, I expect this staff will succeed in the long run.

I am not jumping to any conclusions, however, we can not build a team around players like Dunn in 2020. 2019? Sure, acceptable given the circumstances. No excuses for 2020, though.

For 2019, 7/11 Big East teams (including UConn) have at least 1 top 100 player. Which teams don't? Seton Hall, Georgetown, Creighton and St. John's. Those other 3 teams all have significantly more talent returning than we do.

CMA gets a full pass for 2019. My point is top 100 (or top 200 at worst) recruits need to be the norm for 2020. They were the norm during Lavin's and Mullin's first year. They need to be the norm for Anderson's first full recruiting cycle, too. Maybe I'm wrong but Dunn seems like a 3 star (200-400 range) caliber player.

Anyone saying it takes multiple years to get top recruits is wrong. Look at Mullin. Look at Lavin. Dan Hurley has 3 top 100 recruits next year for his first full cycle. Ewing had multiple top recruits for his first full cycle, too.

Yes, it's the dog days of summer and most likely we'll get multiple top recruits for 2020. That isn't a guarantee though and we need to stick to realistic narratives when names like Dunn are mentioned as potential 2020 solutions. Anything but a big (top 30) class for 2020 would be concerning.

Or - we have high expectations for 2020, and also understand that it's not easy. We are complex beings.

I’m not playing the “have you seen him” game. I’m fine with him coming on board if he can help us in 2019. Zero problems with that. I’ve been watching ball long enough to know that we aren’t going anywhere in the Big East with the level
Of talent we have sans Figueroa, Heron and maybe 2 or 3 others. I know what type of talent the rest of he league brings in and I’ve seen most of our bench guys. We are not yet built to challenge for the upper half of the league, and are likely going to be hopeful to stay out of the bottom of it.

Dunn is coming from a mid-major school and put up fair numbers with some poor percentages. I like that he’s a nyc with toughness and will play at both ends. I’m assuming coach Anderson wants to do this so we can press the crap out of teams this year and send waves at teams defensively. I think that is a good idea.

I don’t see this kid being any sort of hedge for landing some higher tier players for 2020. There’s too many good 3-4 star players that we should be able to compete. Do I trust Anderson? Sure. That said, we need a lot more talent than we have and sooner rather than later. It’s not even fall yet. Need to land some studs and not just role-players moving forward.

Adam, I agree we need to get a solid recruiting class for 2020. However, statistics as far as top 30 classes can be overrated. UVA did not have a top 40 class in 2018 as ranked by ESPN and Texas Tech was #31 (and were both below top 40 for 2017) yet they played in last year's finals.

What exactly does no excuses mean? I have not seen any of the coaches make excuses and they are the only ones who count. You want to hold Lavin and Mullin up as your yardsticks go right ahead. I want a program, not one hit wonders. I could care less about the numbers after a recruits name. Same question for you, when exactly was the last time you saw Dunn play? If you can’t say in the last year or so, what is your opinion worth? Amazing the opinions people have on players they have never seen play and coaches they have really never seen coach. If you bothered to try to find out anything about Anderson it seems he doesn’t recruit “ by the numbers” but rather the players he thinks he can mold into his team. You want to hold up Lavin and Mullin recruiting alongside their dysfunctional teams? Your choice, but I sure as hell don’t.

Yeah, but that's really hard though, or something. I just wanted to make sure you understood that. Again, you get that it's hard, right?

Right, complex expect away.

It's true that recruiting is just one part of the equation, but I'd argue it's the most important part because there's a very high correlation between recruiting and winning. I think 2020 in particular is critical because 2019 likely will be a down year and 2020 could be even worse. I strongly feel we need a strong class for 2020.

Lavin's first class (2011): #7
Lavin's second class (2012- first full recruiting class): #33

Mullin's first class (2015): #26
Mullin's second class (2016- first full recruiting class): #24

Anderson's first class (2019): #154
Anderson's second class (2020- first full recruiting class): ?

By 2020 Heron and likely LJ will be gone. Our recruiting for 2019 has sucked (understandably) so 2020 needs to be a big class. No way around that.

No excuses means fans can't make excuses for an underwhelming 2020 class (if that happens). Pretty simple and I already see some doing that. A strong 2020 class is critical, no way we will be successful recruiting players like Dunn. If Dunn is one of our solutions for 2020 (as a starter) then he needs to be an outlier. CMA at Arkansas recruited top 25-40ish classes nearly every year. THAT would be excellent, but we don't know yet if he can do the same at St. John's. We don't know the recruiting dynamics at Arkansas.

I'm a big fan of CMA's hire (read any of my posts on this forum), but he's still unproven as a Johnnies coach. He'll need to prove himself like everyone else before given benefit of the doubt.

Obviously, Dunn is not a prized recruit. But, before jumping to concerns that CMA is not aiming high enough, consider the 2020 targets he and staff are involved with.

The 2019 class has been assembled in less than 120 days. The expectation, for that time frame, is to retain existing talent (done) and grab as many serviceable players as possible. It's hard to ask for more than that.
