Dunn Visit

Eh. Anderson and staff obviously get a pass for this year since they were hired after everyone already committed to other schools, but I'm not optimistic about any of next year's newcomers or potential newcomers (besides Steere).

As long as Dunn doesn't take a scholarship from a 2020 recruit then I'm fine with it. 2020 needs to be a big class.

Don’t know one way or the other, but seems prudent to believe staff has their reasons. With all the chaos at CSU & Dunn sitting out a year, getting waiver seems quite possible.
Sounds like it would be Rutherford or McGriff not impressing if they are pursuing Dunn with the thought that he could get the waiver. And I think I remember someone saying that McGriff was looking good.
0-2
.

That’s helpful. Thanks.

If it’s not Rutherford and/or Mcgriff-and Mooose is saying it’s not-why are we going after another PG? Especially when we need a big?

For whatever it is worth he is a really good and smart kid. St. Francis came to Montreal 23 months ago and Coach Braica invited me to spend time with the team. After their last game as they were walking to the team bus to return to the hotel he turned to Glenn and said I am going with him , pointing to me , and he came over and had dinner and hung out with my boys until I brought him back prior to curfew.

Dunn is not a PG as you can see by his stats. Obviously could fill in here and there I guess.

Rather save a scholly for 2020 here...no need in just getting anyone we can at this point especially when we have enough of that position. Stats don't seem to indicate he will offer much of anything at this level to be honest. I'm sure he's a great kid, but we need dawgs as Jamal Adams says. Can you play or not? That matters too.

Not directed at anyone in particular but I would trust the judgement of a HC with 17 consecutive winning seasons at three different programs working with an experienced, quality staff over guys looking at stats while trying to analyze a roster in which most of us have seen two players on the court for any length of time.

Reasonable

It’s also easy for us fans to say “pocket the scholarship for next year”, I’ve done it myself. Problem is that these coaches body of work is judged starting on day 1. If we have a poor season, it doesn’t come back to us, it comes back to the head coach. If CMA and staff think we need something now, then maybe we do. I agree with logen on that one. Not sure why another guard but have to assume they think we need more, despite us fans thinking we are set.

i think it's pretty straightforward what CMA is doing: he's using this year as tryouts. you do well, you stick around, you don't, thank you for stopping by. getting off to a good start in year one is crucial. so why not completely fill the roster to give yourself as many options as possible? we need bodies. a couple of these guys may surprise us.

as many have already said, the 2020 recruiting class will be the ultimate barometer.

I get your point but would change one thing; 2020 will be the first barometer unless one measurement is all he gets.

His numbers aren't bad at St. Francis. Three point percentage improved from year 1 to year 2, however still low. He's a tough NYC guard. I'm not that against this and I really don't think it blocks us from signing a PG in 2020.

In Carlos Castaneda's writing about the Yaqui Indian brujo Don Juan, there is a passage about learning to look where things are not. If our last scholarship is used on a guard/wing and Steere is unavailable first semester, perhaps there is a possibility that Josh Roberts has taken a tremendous leap in skill and a judgment has been made that bringing in a second level big would be a disservice to both the team and the player.

In thinking about this I remembered Coach Lapchick's last game and sophomore Sonny Dove playing Villanova senior Jim Washington to a draw and STJ's 1965 NIT Championship. Josh Robert's second jump and quick feet reminded me of Sonny Dove.

Really good point

Fwiw, last week Heron told local scribe that Josh looks great, much improved.

You do have to wonder if he’s not the main man like he was at SF for two years and he has less defender attention if he becomes more efficient and the percentages go up.
