Duke Game Thread

Debilitating loss for SJU.

I think when the book is closed on this season we will look back to this game and see that we had given up 53 innthe first 32 minutes vs Duke and 24 in the last 8 minutes And we will say "that's where we lost the chance to right the ship this season."

I think that it's absurd that our conference record is 2-4 based on the way we played for the majority of this game. We had a top 5 team on the ropes the whole day, so the 2-4 conference record is a reflection on an inept coach. We ca t finish games because our guys get tired. Same thing happened vs Nova. I know, I am rehashing but this goes to Lavin recruiting 6 big east players (and I don't even think we can call Phil Greene a BE player).

For once I cant say the refs did a bad job. They actually gave us the gift three pointer befor half where the shot clock expired. Even Ray Charles can see that.

So now we play out the string. Yes there's still 12 games plus the BET but this team is too inconsistent despite the talent being there to offer any hope of a resurgence this year. We prob go to Creighton and lose Wednesday. They are due for a win and have been close on a few occasions. Is there a team other than us they are happier to see?

I feel for the kids. they play their hearts out especially Harrison and Pointer. Jordan is brilliant then he commits a critical foul when a Duke player is shooting a three and he also completely disappeared second half and comitttedfour turnovers. NBA ready my ass. Obekpa today too ZERO blocks. He better not go pro either. Not ready. Oakafor was way superior today.

So it was a great performance for 32 minutes with the ending we all wish never happened. I would've been happier with my 98-71 prediction I wouldn't be this frustrated at least.

Very proud of the team and the coach today.

Yes I have issues with us having no depth but this team was up for the game, just couldn't match Dook's collective talent across the board.

Dom was a beast and I hope playing in front of 200+ scouts gets him a shot in the summer league. He was everything I envisioned when he was our highest rated recruit coming in.

Many will disagree but I thought Okafor owned Obekpa.

You can give a kid credit for ball denial but CO was literally hanging off his back every possession. He could've been called for any number of fouls if the refs wanted to.

CO needs to desperately stick around for his Senior year and work on his rebounding and guarding guys straight up. Waldow, Okafor and numerous bigs push him around too often. He did hold his grown against the #1 pick which is saying something.

Sheed looked amazing for a half. That was vintage Vaux Sheed. I hope he carries it through the rest of the year.

D'Lo. Gave us nothing on one leg. Kid is all heart but he was the difference. Even 3/4s healthy and we win. Kinda hard watching him out there. He killed us but he has saved us so many times you can't hold it against him.

Lastly, I don't care about Diallo, Lovett or anyone else.

The staff better go out and find a dedicated rebounder. I don't care if the kid can't do anything else outside of rebounding. I don't care if he's unranked. But it should be the highest priority. I don't know if ADR is the guy but we need someone just for rebounding. It is glaringly obvious.

And Coach K can take a hike for all I care.

"D'Lo. Gave us nothing on one leg. Kid is all heart but he was the difference. Even 3/4s healthy and we win. Kinda hard watching him out there. He killed us but he has saved us so many times you can't hold it against him."

Wow, really big of you to not hold it against a kid playing his heart out hurt. Of course he still "killed us" according to you. Out of all the knuckleheads who can't keep his performance in any perspective at all, you take the blue ribbon.

Gotta love it when you have a 3-0 break, or whatever it was, and the whistle gets blown "inadvertently" so instead of getting a fast break layup or dunk, you have to take the ball out at the side.

Things even out. Harrison's 3 at the buzzer before halftime should not have counted.

They spent all their energy during the first 30 mins of the game. They had nothing left for the last 10 mins. That's the bottom line.

I am happy with how our kids played. They left it all out there on the court and busted fheir tails. It just wasn't enough.

Back to conference play.

I believe he got the shot off before the buzzer

He did not come close to getting it off before the 35 second clock ran out; not even close, we got a gift.

Lavin probably saved his job today so you and your boys can remain angry for many years to come.
Thanks for dropping by.

As good as the team looked at times today, not taking care of the ball for 40 minutes continues to be a liability. That includes fast breaks on which we either throw the ball away or force it up. Ball movement and penetration today was real good, and the team looks like it has embraced Jordan and is building chemistry. So, I agree with other posters, we may be down when it comes to the NCAA Tournament, but we're not out. This team still has potential. Go Johnnies!

Harrison's injury, if not prolonged, can be a blessing. Jordan can step into a front and center role in the offense, something that was missing when Harrison was healthy.

I wondered why we didn't respond to Plumlee problems with Amar.

It was a no lose situation for us. Win and we could be considered tourney worthy. Lose and it didn't hurt us.

Very proud of the effort this team gave today. If Harrison gets healthy and they play with this much effort and intensity the rest of the season we can win 10 oe 11 games in the Big East and earn an NCAA bid. I still didn't some of the turnovers on the fast break opportunities. Throwing the ball the length of the court and barreling down into the lane out of control. We gave up three or four possessions like that today which could have kept the momentum in our favor and maybe we win this game. Other than that if was a great effort albeit a losing one. It's clear that this team is a quality Power Forward from being a top 10 tem team and that's on Lavin.

Always gotta find a way to knock the coach I see.

Guys didn't lose because they were tired. They lost because Dook hit shots when it mattered and rebounded the ball.

Obekpa- 36 min//Okafor- 37 min
Sheed- 38 min//Jones- 39 min
D'Lo on one calf- 35 min//Cook- 38 min

The lack of '14 recruits is an argument for another day.

If we pulled out a win, you wouldn't bring up this point.

Disagree. With pretty much everything you said.

On the VERY plus side, at Mass this morning, Father Tom at St. Anne's in GC spoke about the game in his homily in detail. He said he had a few friends at St. John's, and his suggestion to them was to deflate the balls. When people start speaking about St. John's in unusual places, we are relevant.

For us frustrated fans, we are so close to being a winner that we can taste it, but the lack of tasting wins embitters you.

I didn't see ur Diallo tweet I hope it's good news for the program. But if u think today's game saved Lavin's job you are mistaken. It's already a done deal and SJU cannot afford to continue paying his salary and his staff's salaries. They are in the jay wright/jt3 area and we don't get those results. hes out.
