Duke Game Thread

My take on the game is this:

I don't really feel bad at all after this one. It hurt so bad right when we lost because my mind started to think with that ten point lead: "this can happen, we can beat duke". So when we blew it it hurt really bad. But I've had time to think about, actually just went back and watched the game on DVR too, and think that a healthy DLo gets us to points we needed down the stretch to keep our noses in front, and we win.

You look at the games we've won this year, the big wins, @providence, you see DLo getting 5 crucial points to fight off a providence run, against cuse, it was phil who got us over the hump. Tonight, we just didn't have that guy. It sucks but DLo hopefully starts to feel better. And I just wanna say I really think he is slightly injured, but it is in between the ears for DLo too. He has no faith in his jump shot because of his legs so refuses to take it. Like take the buzzer beater he hit in first half. Shouldn't of counted, but he had to throw it up quick and when he did he drained it. To me that was because he wasn't thinking about his leg, he just reacted. So in my opinion it is mental, he will be alright. It just takes one night for him to get back on track and I bet he is amazing rest of the season, hopefully it is Wednesday.

Aside from that, this loss hurt but showed what this team can be for the rest of the season. IMO it is a team that doesn't lose again. I know it sounds crazy but I have a feeling we don't lose for the rest of the season minus the games at gtown and nova. Rysheed and Dom looked like animals, and when everyone starts firing on all cylinders we are sooo good.

I am so optimistic right now, and a Creighton loss would take it allll out of me, but for right now I'm feeling good. This team showed me and the nation something today, and that is what I wanted them to do. Hopefully the fans keep coming out after seeing how exciting we are, and we just go off for the rest of the season. I have this 2011 feeling in me right now, I think we are gonna use this loss and blast ourselves into a 7 seed in the tourney

I
Debilitating loss for SJU.

I think when the book is closed on this season we will look back to this game and see that we had given up 53 innthe first 32 minutes vs Duke and 24 in the last 8 minutes And we will say "that's where we lost the chance to right the ship this season."

I think that it's absurd that our conference record is 2-4 based on the way we played for the majority of this game. We had a top 5 team on the ropes the whole day, so the 2-4 conference record is a reflection on an inept coach. We ca t finish games because our guys get tired. Same thing happened vs Nova. I know, I am rehashing but this goes to Lavin recruiting 6 big east players (and I don't even think we can call Phil Greene a BE player).

For once I cant say the refs did a bad job. They actually gave us the gift three pointer befor half where the shot clock expired. Even Ray Charles can see that.

So now we play out the string. Yes there's still 12 games plus the BET but this team is too inconsistent despite the talent being there to offer any hope of a resurgence this year. We prob go to Creighton and lose Wednesday. They are due for a win and have been close on a few occasions. Is there a team other than us they are happier to see?

I feel for the kids. they play their hearts out especially Harrison and Pointer. Jordan is brilliant then he commits a critical foul when a Duke player is shooting a three and he also completely disappeared second half and comitttedfour turnovers. NBA ready my ass. Obekpa today too ZERO blocks. He better not go pro either. Not ready. Oakafor was way superior today.

So it was a great performance for 32 minutes with the ending we all wish never happened. I would've been happier with my 98-71 prediction I wouldn't be this frustrated at least.

Thought you'd emerge and knew you'd be happy.
Lavin probably saved his job today so you and your boys can remain angry for many years to come.
Thanks for dropping by.

Make sure u tweet that sweetie. You've done well with that.

Still pissed I was correct Jordan?

Right it's too bad he transferred.

Thank God we had a guy that looked just like him playing today.

He was history and got talked out of it.
You question my Diallo tweet from last month at the PC game?

I didn't see ur Diallo tweet I hope it's good news for the program. But if u think today's game saved Lavin's job you are mistaken. It's already a done deal and SJU cannot afford to continue paying his salary and his staff's salaries. They are in the jay wright/jt3 area and we don't get those results. hes out.

If you are going to come on here and make those statements about Lavin's job, please cite your sources. Or stop with the rumor mongering. It's not very ethical.

This one hurts. WE had this one and we ran out of steam. The "inadvertent" whistle killed us too, along with a couple of favorable foul calls around the same time.

I had to shut it off, I can't watch them celebrate.

Yeah Guinness, yeah the same shit with Villanova. Up 2 with 10min lose by 18.
Up 61-51, then we stop scoring, we had this damn game, if they could just play for 40minutes.
It really just eats my up.

Oh well, back to B.E. business, they NEED to win these next two games in the worst way.

Steve Lavin @SJUCoachLavin
We went up against a top-5 team today and came up short. We'll learn from it but clearly we are a team moving in the right direction. #SJUBB

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't see 2-5 in your last 7 as a 'team moving in the right direction.'

The game was just as I expected. We came to play and were the better team for most of the game. The final margin is deceiving since we led with 6 minutes to go and were down by only 3 with 4 minutes left in the game.

I have not replayed the game yet so I can only critique what I saw with all the distractions and my eyes wandering but to me this game was ours to give away when we were up 10 and as our luck would have it, we slowly gave Duke the game with critical turnovers, mostly unforced, and another horrible game by Harrison. It took just 3 or 4 bad rushed plays and weak rebounding to let Duke back in. It did not help that seniors Green, Branch and Harrison could not defend Tyus Jones shadow who was perfect from the line when fouled. Sound familiar? It should as we have a knack for  fouling the other team's best foul shooer.
Okafor was as contained as humanly possible by Obekpa but it was the Duke guards I worried about and they beat us with critical plays under 4 minutes to play. This is not a great Duke team and we were a D'Angelo Harrison away from having them leave the Big Apple with a blue tail up their blue demon asses.
Of course my critique would not be complete without some criticism of Steve Lavin and in this game it is the failure to put in our resident thug, Joey D to bang up Marshall Plumlee when they went big a few times in the second half. At that point I would have put in JDR or Amar and removed the ineffective Harrison who, by the 8 minute mark, was forcing his game. Other than that I thought Lavin did a decent job.
As for those who thought we would have a small handful of fans, there was plenty of red around the arena and St. John's greats Louie, Chris Mullin, Felipe Lopez and of course the Maven were in the house. As erroneously reported by some doom and gloomers most students did not scalp their seats.
In the end of course, this is another game we let slip away near the end on tired legs due to lack of front court depth that led to mental mistakes. Thank you Mr. Thomas and Mr. Delarosa.
As I feared, Mrs. coach K was in attendance and her charming face must have also played a role in our loss. Sorry Logen I could not resist.

Disagree. With pretty much everything you said.

Today was a chance to get a signature win we desperately needed and we had a double digit lead with eight minutes to go and lost. That's the reality. With losses against nova the zags butler the hall and now Duke it's time to start winning these games if we are gonna make a push. We can't be happy with a close game against Duke. We should've won 100% today and we blew it. moral victories will get us to the NIT or less at this point.

Very proud of the team and the coach today.

Yes I have issues with us having no depth but this team was up for the game, just couldn't match Dook's collective talent across the board.

Dom was a beast and I hope playing in front of 200+ scouts gets him a shot in the summer league. He was everything I envisioned when he was our highest rated recruit coming in.

Many will disagree but I thought Okafor owned Obekpa.

You can give a kid credit for ball denial but CO was literally hanging off his back every possession. He could've been called for any number of fouls if the refs wanted to.

CO needs to desperately stick around for his Senior year and work on his rebounding and guarding guys straight up. Waldow, Okafor and numerous bigs push him around too often. He did hold his grown against the #1 pick which is saying something.

Sheed looked amazing for a half. That was vintage Vaux Sheed. I hope he carries it through the rest of the year.

D'Lo. Gave us nothing on one leg. Kid is all heart but he was the difference. Even 3/4s healthy and we win. Kinda hard watching him out there. He killed us but he has saved us so many times you can't hold it against him.

Lastly, I don't care about Diallo, Lovett or anyone else.

The staff better go out and find a dedicated rebounder. I don't care if the kid can't do anything else outside of rebounding. I don't care if he's unranked. But it should be the highest priority. I don't know if ADR is the guy but we need someone just for rebounding. It is glaringly obvious.

And Coach K can take a hike for all I care.

They had him until a transcript got in the way.

A word of thanks and praise to all the SJU fans who made it to MSG. On TV it seemed like a sea of Red with just a little blue and the "Let's Go Johnnies" chant could be heard loud and clear (that is when Gus Johnson wasn't braying). That kind of support can only help in the recruiting game.

I counted three easy missed baskets in the first half. One a blown dunk and two (?) overthrown outlet passes when we had numbers down court. Six.

Then there was the phantom whistle. Eight.

If CO goes 4 for 6 from the line. Ten.

Do the little things right and we win this game.

1. When the season began, were we supposed to win this game?
2. When we went off at 11-1, were we supposed to win this game?
3. When Harrison got hurt, could you expect we'd even be in the game?

i'll answer for you - 1. No 2. No 3. No

Today would have been a phenomenal win for this year's edition, but if Harrison's injury is affecting his play, no one in their right mind could expect a win today.

Any questions?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't see 2-5 in your last 7 as a 'team moving in the right direction.'

If we win 2 out of our next three games vs. Creighton, Providence, and Butler (plausible result), we'd be dead even with the 2011 team after 9 Big East games.

One at a time. Even with Harrison not 100%, we should beat Creighton. Let's root for that.

Agreed beast but now that we have dug a 2-4 hole in the league this would've been a great win for our resume and it was ours for the taking. I think it would've set us on a run alla 2011.

No Beast, but with 10minutes to go, and a 10pnt lead. We almost f'ing had it.
Oh what could have been, that's what get me so crazy.

I know. Me too.

But if we are honest with ourselves, we were all watching the clock tick interminably slowly and hoping we'd hold on to win, rather than believing we'd blast them out onto 7th Avenue.

Not quite the Holiday Festival 75 game vs. Indiana, but our guys didn't back down one bit, and for 80% of the game outplayed Duke and gave them everything they could handle. I'm proud of our guys.

Sadly their will be a plaque at the Garden commemorating this great feat by Coack K showing St. John's as the loser. Garden is happy that this happened here in the Worlds Greatest Arena. Maybe they'll hang a banner next to Looie's 526
