Detroit Game

always the effn doom and gloomers on here..its so pathetic...lets just call it a season now...st johns will finish last in everything, will lose every game. coach will leave for california...

You're absolutely right. Everyone on here see's the glass half empty, it would be such a pleasant surprise to be surrounded by people with rose colored glasses for a change. (If I knew how to make an icon with the eyes rolling, this would be the perfect place)

Good point -- damn doom and gloomers. So what that we are picked for the bottom of the league. So what that it appears that one of our top players will be ineligible again (our fourth in two years). So what if there seem to be some disciplinary issues with our best player. So what if on a team with no shooters, one of our two best pure shooters has not been cleared to play. So what if we've struck out on a number of our top recruits lately. In Lavin we trust.

For the record, I am not criticizing anybody. Let's wait until we learn the facts. But I am sick of the drama and sick of the bad news. Honestly, I was dreading to go onto this site for the last two weeks, bc I was expecting to see something like this -- it is deja vu.

As fand, we all react differently. I admit that I tend to be more vocal in my criticism and frustration -- and let me tell you I'm frustrated. Without some additional pieces, the team that I saw in the two exhibition games will not win more than 12-15 games this year.

I read a post on Johnny Jungle that took the words right out of my mouth. We all know Lavin is the master PR man. He's been talking up Christian Jones for the last couple of weeks. I wonder if that's b/c he had an inkling that Sanchez would not see the light of day.

i just don't know why teams even play games any more. it's stupid. hand Louisville the national title today. i mean how can a team with a lot more pieces to the puzzles even have a chance to win the same amount of games as they did with 6 players last year?

So this team as it stands is only 1-2 games better than last year with a much easier OOC schedule?

See, generally people react happily when good things happen. You know you get a promotion, get laid, your team wins. And generally those same people react sadly when bad things happen. You know, you get fired, you get drunk and have sex with a fat girl, your favorite college team loses two guys from their rotation right before the season starts and their best player and coach don't seem to get along.

you have no clue what DLO even did...it's so idiotic to make presumptions on what is going on, much less that him and coach aren't getting along.... what 2 players?? wasn't it just Orlando that you heard rumors about?? i guess Marco made some mistakes 3 years ago to...has anyone translated his facebook page today?? I would but don't speak french...

Based on what I saw in the exhibitions -- I don't think we fair much better than we did last year give or take a game or two. I hope I'm completely wrong. Maybe Borgeault gets eligible and he shoots lights out. Maybe Branch will be a difference maker in December. Maybe Harrision gets his head on straight. I just don't see where the offense is going to come from. I like Sampson a lot, but to expect him to replace Mo is asking a lot. Obekpa seems like he'll be very good, but he's a freshman with a limited offensive game. Jones is undersized and a freshman -- it's not realistic to expect him to be a top Big East player out of the gates.

I really had high hopes for Sanchez. I agree with those who say we should play the games -- heck I've never even seen Sanchez play. But this is sooo frustrating.

Agree Rawdog that we don't know all the facts. But don't we have a right to be frustrated? I really don't know whose at fault. I just know that my favorite team may have to play without two potential impact players, which is eerily reminiscent of what happened last year.

I have no idea, but what does that have to do with anything? Since Lavin has decided, right or wrong,( I am not judging who is at fault becuase as we both mentioned I have no idea) our best player is being punished 3 games in a row. There is clearly something there. Based on what we know about Harrison and him being our best player, I don't think you would say this is a good thing.

As far as Marco, I doubt he will be eligible for the first game. If what people on this board were telling me in private is true, at some point he will be declared eligible for one season. Hopefully that turns out to be the case

of course it's ok to be frustrated. I hate the fact that we are dealing with this. was hoping for smooth sailing. with that being said, these are things that we have no control over so why stress over it or get overly frustrated? the team will either have sanchez or they wont. simple as that. if they don't have him we had God's Gift. Perhaps not as talented, but he has played a year in the big east. actually with the minutes he put it, almost two years... we have plenty of players if sanchez isnt eligible and our staff will get them ready to be the best players they can be... last year was a lot different. however i understand your concern

Jones is in no way undersized for a college PF.

We know what coach told us. And coach Lavin said D'angelo didn't necessarily break any rules, but that he (Lavin) has a heightened expectation of leadership for Harrison this season, and expects him to go above and beyond. He hasn't, and that's why he was benched.
That's what coach actually said before the 2nd preseason game. I can find the quotes if you'd like.

That doesn't sound like a good enough reason to bench your best player all preseason and give him another slap for the first game.

So the game tomorrow is only half sold out? That's pretty bad.
I know it's a terrible time, and an awful commute for a lot of people. But I thought we'd be at least 75% full. It's a meaningful game on national tv.

So are you saying that Lavin has to give every reason to the public as to why DLO was being benched? Perhaps it's that and something else...Just because he gives a reason, doesn't mean there isn't anything besides that, that he may feel is frankly none of our business

Gonna be tough for most fans. I have to take a half day and this time of year it was not well received.

How many kids are on campus. They are the ones that should be killing 2 hours at the end of the day there. I sure hope that they aren't separating tickets from student seats. Cancel classes for opening day, geez ;)

No, but don't lie. Just say for internal reasons. Coaches across the country do that on a regular basis.
Coach said he didn't do anything major, just wasn't living up to heightened expectations. So, either:
1) D'angelo did more than coach is telling us, in which case just say he violated team rules. The end. Don't suspend your best player for 2 games, not start him for the third, and tell everyone he didn't do anything wrong.

or

2) D'angelo really didn't commit any major violations, in which case he should be on the floor - he deserves to start.

I'll admit it's also hard to get people juiced about college basketball in early November.

Does it really matter though?? Obviously he has his reasons. He won't start, however you can bet as long as he stays out of foul trouble he will see 30 plus minutes... Who cares if he misses the first 2-4 minutes of the first half?? It's not that big of a deal, and obviously Lavin feels it is warranted for whatever reason., In the perfect world, I'd love for D'Angelo to start and Orlando and Marco in the game, but it is what it is. Roll with it..

You are right, in the big scheme of things it doesn't matter all that much. 30 minutes is 30 minutes whether it be to start the game or as a substitute.

But, I would worry that 1) D'angelo barely got any pt during the exhibition games to develop chemistry with the new parts. and 2) every one of these benchings is another slap on the wrist to d'angelo. He's a temperamental kid as it is. If it's being done unnecessarily, then eventually he may lose his head. Heck, he may lose it anyway.

Sophomore guard D'Angelo Harrison

On his maturation as a leader:

"I listened to what the coaching staff had to say and learned my lesson from not playing the Concordia game. I've basically been growing up these past few practices and being more of a leader on the team. I can't let myself react to things and let my emotions get the best of me; being more mindful of some of the things I had problems with last year. I'm still going to be a leader of this team, that hasn't changed. I'm one of the leaders, it's not just me. I could come off the bench all year, that's fine with, as long as I get to play and I'm going to be a leader no matter what."

On coming off the bench against Detroit:

"It doesn't bother me as long as I get to play. I might lose my starting spot because there are a lot of good players on this team, but I'll be ready no matter what. Even if I'm the last man to get in the game, I'm still going to play how I always play."

On the difficulty of opening against Detroit:

"They are a very athletic group. They have one of the best athletes, Doug Anderson, in college basketball. Ray McCallum is really good, I've known him since I was a little kid. We can't turn the ball over because they will capitalize off of it. After the film we watched, we made it clear to the younger guys that they can play with anyone in the country."
