Curbelo

For whatever the thinking was at the time, taking Curbelo has been a big mistake. Acknowledge it and move on without him. There is still some time left to finish strong , win some more games and while the NCAA is probably not happening, we can do some damage in the NIT.

For whatever reason, I get the impression that CMA promised Curbello a certain amount of playing time, in order to get him to transfer here. And doesn't want to break that promise.

I need to see more of a sample size before saying whether or not he was underrecruited. Remember the love affair our fan base had with Pinzon? Wasn't he the steal of the century for a while there? Now many are calling for him to ride the pines in favor of King. I know it's tough to use stats as a gage when the kid has played so little, but he's shooting 25% or so from the field, and 57% from the line. Those number will have to improve significantly if the kid is gonna see more minutes then he is now.
He doesn't hurt us as much as Curbello, that's now our standard.

I've seen Curbello make three trips in a row as "PG" and no one else touched the ball...King looks for open jerseys, moves the ball around. It's just refreshing compared to the drama of Curbello.

The opportunity is here, he's waited all season, we all want him to do well.

Curbelo would be a decent player if he could just play within a system but he always plays like he wants to get on the And1 mixtape. Other than Skip to my lou who had a good HS coach, the rest of the players always wondered why they weren't in the league.

Curbelo is 21 years old . He’s not a kid , I think he could play somewhere Internationally. Or in Puerto Rico . He’s probably better off turning Pro and forget about more College BB . A question . I wasn’t familiar with his Recruiting from HS did he consider St John’s before choosing Illinois ? Would he have played with Posh and Wusu at LI Lutheran ?

I'm not sure about any AAU connections but Posh and Wusu played H.S. ball for OSL in the Bronx. Curbelo did play with Traoe and Pinzon at LI Lutheran.

Absolutely he deserves more time and has earned it, and of course we all want him to do well. However he has nowhere near the talent or upside of Curbelo, and I don't care what Tim Brando thinks. Im still hoping, maybe delusionally, that Curbelo had an epiphany moment in between bites of popcorn. And that he comes out next game with a new mindset, because he can still be one hell of a player for us if he gets himself together.

No time left in the season for one man to get it together. Would have been nice if Curbelo was good, but he doesn't make anyone better around him. Can't totally sabotage the season because of one man.

I am not advocating for Curbelo, all I'm saying is that he has the potential to move the needle on this team. Less this season but a whole lot next season. If he gets his head screws on right. I realize that's a big "if". King is a nice little role right now, that's it. He ain't moving the needle at all IMO.

Curbello gets his head straight, harnesses his great talent, SJ goes on a late season run, CMA gets another extension.

In the early 80s, Lou brought the super talented Curtis Redding back home from Kansas State and it blew up in his face.

But Lou was strong enough or stern enough to park Redding on his bench. He did not hurt team chemistry. He did not force a vet to change his game dramatically. He did not cost Lou games.

That's the right way to handle it.

Curtis Redding suffered a terrible leg injury at Kansas St. SJU was well aware of it but he was such a talent they took a chance and brought him in.
He was never the same player and it didn’t work out. Completely different from the Curbello transfer.

Similarities in that Redding was a head case…Lou pulled him from a game vs.Rutgets at CA…he was pissed and outwardly rooted for Rutgers on the bench

I must be missing something bc I don’t see it with Curbelo. I think he stinks and his numbers bare that out. And that has nothing to do with him being a head case.

He does stink right now. He's played horribly. Again, I'm the last guy in the world to defend him. I warned about him when he first committed here, and got called out on it quite a bit. But he's got a lot of natural talent IMO, and he's got skill sets that, if harnessed, can make him a very good ballplayer. As I stated before, that's a big "if".

I don't recall St. John's ever being in the running for Curbelo. Not surprising as he was a 4 star, top 50 recruit. In other words, out of our league until their flaws are revealed and they hit the transfer market.

Curbelo has had some very good moments here. But to paraphrase Chris Mullin, everyone at this level can have some big moments or even a big game. A player isn't good and certainly not great until they do it every game. Andre has started games strong, and has bursts of energy where he really competes, gets big steals, and penetrates and finds the open man. Then he does something silly and seems to lose interest or gets down on himself. I didn't watch enough Illini basketball to form any real thoughts on Curbelo. Perhaps some posters who watched him play at Illinois can chime in.
