Curbelo

I don't recall St. John's ever being in the running for Curbelo. Not surprising as he was a 4 star, top 50 recruit. In other words, out of our league until their flaws are revealed and they hit the transfer market.

Curbelo has had some very good moments here. But to paraphrase Chris Mullin, everyone at this level can have some big moments or even a big game. A player isn't good and certainly not great until they do it every game. Andre has started games strong, and has bursts of energy where he really competes, gets big steals, and penetrates and finds the open man. Then he does something silly and seems to lose interest or gets down on himself. I didn't watch enough Illini basketball to form any real thoughts on Curbelo. Perhaps some posters who watched him play at Illinois can chime in.
The Curbelo you're seeing this season is playing even worse then the Curbelo that I watched at Illinois last season, and I watched him a fair amount last season. Not so much his freshman year, when he seemed to have played much more under control coming off the bench.

Out of probably a sense of morbid curiosity than anything, does anyone know if he is eligible to suit up tomorrow?

I wish that I was as technically knowledgeable as Paultzman so that I could retrieve threads from Posh and Andre's recruitment and freshman recruitment and freshman year in college. I can vividly recall some posters lamenting how we missed the boat on Andre and Posh was a consolation prize. Talk about selective recall, lmao.

In regards to accepting Andre as a transfer, let me remind you that he played at Long Island Lutheran HS, one of the premier programs in New York. He also played for the New York Jayhawks AAU program. If our Staff had said that they were not taking Andre, they would have alienated his high school and AAU coaches. This was a gamble that they had to take.

If God forbid, we had turned down Andre as a transfer, this Board would have blown up with negative comments, IJS.

Wait, I thought Posh simply regressed from All BE standout to a bum as so many here said.
I’m not sure why but

All true. The fact that he has been a disaster here and those facts are NOT mutually exclusive.

As someone close to the program, can you give any insight into why CMA has been unable to reign in Curbelo?

Agreed but that is part of the problem.
We can’t turn down talent even if it makes no basketball sense and was a filled position already.

Curbelos problem is all between the ears. Really non basketball related, cause the kid is really talented.

Doesn’t know how to really work and be a leader. And thinks he’s better than what he is at this point. Potential is there, but his attitude and play has not been there. And it has affected the team.

I don’t think he’s on the road trip to DePaul atm.

Can’t shoot either though
Honestly unlike Posh, Curbelo negatives outweigh positives

Not worth the headache on this point. Kid hates practice. It’s an everyday ordeal. First couple of good practices in a while were before Providence, and that was the most cohesive team we have seen all season.

Time to put out to pasture like Ole Yeller.

I’ve heard another BE coach describe him as a “program killer”.

His attitude and work ethic doesn’t match our program at this point. It’s very apparent at this point.

He’s not to blame for where the season is, but man it has been a disappointment as far as him meshing.

We’ll see.

I must be missing something bc I don’t see it with Curbelo. I think he stinks and his numbers bare that out. And that has nothing to do with him being a head case.
He does stink. He may have some individual basketball talent, but he is a team wrecker, who never belonged on the court at the same time as Posh. Even King a freshman with little court time to date co-exists better with Posh than Curbelo does. My hope is that he never sees the court again in a St. John's uniform. I would rathet King gets his minutes even with some freshman mistakes. He guards better than Curbelo, he passes better than Curbelo, he shoots better than Curbelo, especially from the outside (despite Current percentages), and probably will have less turnovers that Curbelo.

Because he’s playing for a coach that runs a very undisciplined system.

I tried to bump his recruiting page for you but it’s locked and looks like only an admin can do so. It’s classic though and a must read. If I get bored at work in a bit I might quote some of the better comments just for fun.

I think Curbelo can be best summed up by the word enigmatic. It would be 100% inaccurate to say he has no talent. His High School performance that made him a top fifty ranked recruit and his Big Ten 6th man of the year play as a Freshman at Illinois were not mirages.

There were questions about his transfer here on multiple levels, but talent was not one of them. His performance in a SJU uniform have been wildly inconsistent right from the beginning. Watching him in the DR, I thought he wasn't much at all. The night of the Barclay's Center game against Syracuse I thought he was our best player and held the key to a winning season. Moment to moment even within games I have seen both sides of the equation. His tendency for being flashy over being solid can be maddening, his odd behavior that emerges too often is highly concerning and his overall impact on the team has probably been more negative than positive.

I hope for his sake that he can get a true handle on what makes him special and what he needs to do to use those special talents to contribute to the greater good. This goes way beyond basketball and is more about creating a meaningful and impactful life. That process is difficult for many young people who are trying to find their way in the world. Hopefully for Curbelo he can develop the insight that will put him on the path to success and happiness.
