Coaching Changes

Dick Vitale @DickieV

A fly on the wall just told me a couple of interesting names on the AD's list at Ohio St / FRANK MARTIN / ED COOLEY
Lol!!
Frank Martin would be the Cuban reincarnation of Bobby Knight in the BIG.
The Ed Cooley suggestion scares me. He is an excellent coach and recruiter. Would be devastating for the Friars.

I thought Providence was Cooley's "dream job"

Per @GaryParrishCBS Fred Hoiberg is a candidate to replace Thad Matta at Ohio State. Would be a home run hire.

Out of the park grand slam home run hire. But the problem is that it would start Matt to Ohio St. rumors. And he already played that hand recently, so what would happen if he tried it again?

He could use the interest as leverage for a raise. Currently makes $2 mil.

Just because Ohio St. is interested doesn't mean Cooley is and if he isand accepts the job it just means some people over achieve what their dreams were, hence the phrase-it is more than I could ever have dreamed of.

It is almost obscene what Ohio State and other football schools are willing to pay for a few extra wins in college basketball!
They will owe Matta close to $9 million, may have to buy out the remaining $15 million of Hoiberg's Bulls contract AND pay millions to the new coach!
Coach Matta was one of the winningest coaches both in college basketball and in the BIG. In the past decade he won four Big Ten Tournament titles (2007, 2010, 2011 and 2013), two Final Four appearances (2007 and 2012), and the 2008 NIT Championship.
One bad season (last year) and he is history before the age of 50!
If Chris Mullin has half that success in the next 7 years he would be recommended for sainthood.

Per Goodman:

Ohio State is meeting with Creighton's Greg McDermott tonight

Both the BIG and ACC have been after Big East talent. It reinforces what a great conference it was and continues to be.

I'd let him sit on the scorers table too on the way to sainthood

"Fred Hoiberg is among the candidates at Ohio State but, as of now not among the leaders, source told ESPN".

McDermott is a very good coach. Good news if he stays with the Big East. It will be good if we can find a way to beat them a few times along the way. B)

Just a guess, but I think that OSU is going to be stuck with Chris Jent as their next head coach (not saying he'll be bad, but "stuck with Jent" because they were shooting much higher).

Coaches see how Thad Matta was treated after OSU had their most sustained run of year-to-year success during his tenure (they had better individual seasons, but never this much consistent winning), and realize that they have it pretty good where they are right now.

I read some article that predicted McDermott would stay before he announced it, and one of their reasons was the fact that he likes the somewhat quiet life he can live out there. If someone stops him on the street in Omaha, it's usually a "good luck, Coach", or "thank you, Coach." He usually doesn't have everyone on his back all the time, much more so then in other places. There's something to be said for that.

Chris Jent?!?

Man, I remember Chucky Sproling lighting that dude up in '91 Sweet 16.

If I remember correctly -- and I think I do -- we recruited Jent when he played HS ball in New Jersey.

Sparta, NJ

Maybe he remembers his last foray into the world of football schools that play basketball and decided that getting a raise simply isn't worth all the accompanying bullshit.

Basketball is king at Creighton
At Ohio State, it might be third behind football and spring football
I can see why McDermott is staying where he is
To some, being a big fish in a small pond beats being a small fish in a big pond

Not sure of reliability but one paper from Ohio reported holtmann accepted the OSU job . Waiting on confirmation .
