Coaching Changes

Almost equal to the difference in cost of living but not quite. ;)

Would expect Boston Celtics assistant coach Micah Shrewsberry to be among the main names at Butler. Milwaukee's LaVall Jordan, too.

Butler's road to a successful basketball program has always seemed driven by excellent tacticians in the Hoosier tradition. To continue on that road I suspect we will be surprised by their choice. Perhaps someone promising and young and not an old re-threaded tire (d) for publicity. Apologies to Jack. :)

Nice! Keeping it in the Butler family.

As I noted in an "Around the Big East" post , Butler fans are very excited about having him, even though they think it might prove to be a pit stop until Michigan comes calling after Bielien retires. Other than that, looks like a good hire.

I think that it's a good, even if slightly risky hire, only because Lavall has little head coaching experience. He's a good recruiter though and I'm sure he will be fine. I think Butler likes keeping it in the family, and I think the Big East will continue to look to do this type of hire. Lavall is a Butler grad. I think coaches that have a vested interest in the success of their program, outside of the lure of the top dollar has merit. We aren't a football league with football dollars, but our league's coaches are more and more becoming part of the programs they coach and have history there. I like seeing it and it makes our league more interesting.

Successful coach gets bigger job, with more money. Butler AD interviews four candidates, all with Butler backgrounds. Hires one within a week, and gets two million buyout money from Ohio State..
This is the way a competent AD operates, and I'll wager none of the assistants will be given guaranteed five-year, two million dollar contracts.

I agree with you. However, we are in the process of climbing out of a dark place. The Slice contract was undeniably poor and we should probably have an experience college coach on the bench and another recruiter on the road. That said, to me, the overall direction is positive.

Agree & perhaps SJU adds an experienced college coach after July open recruiting period w/o an overly generous guaranteed contract.

I like to hear this. Would be good for this team to have another assistant who has firm grasp on teaching defense etc.

Bill Parcells?!

The real question is whether this new coach would replace one of our current assistant coaches or would he be named as an "advisor" (a la Gene Keady)?

If it's a replacement for a current assistant, who be the one to go?
