Coaching Alternatives

school is being very tight-lipped. Marc Hsu and Andy Borman are candidates.

Glad Borman back in mix.
Interesting poll from Twitter:

https://twitter.com/JohnKneeStorm/status/1114535807879086083

I voted for Hurley, but surprised to see so much support for Pitino. Unless Slick Rick is voting with a bunch of alt accounts, it seems he may have a good amount of support.
Would I take Hurley? Yes, I would! Though, he wouldn't be my first choice. I do like how he built Buffalo, and he's actually done some good things at Arizona State. But his Arizona State team fizzled badly down the stretch last season and was up-and-down throughout most of this season. Not to mention, I wasn't too impressed with 'em against us in the play-in game. Hurley also occasionally acts as if he needs a sedative. Granted, that wouldn't much be a big deal as long as we're winning. If we're losing, then I think his sideline antics would eventually wear thin.

I never thought much about Pitino since his Louisville fiasco. I don't much care about his private life. That's his life, so what he does is on him. At this juncture, if he want a reprieve then I'd give it to him. Sports doesn't nearly control me like it did when I was younger, but I still get enjoyment and satisfaction whenever the team's I root for wins games and does well. It can be a necessary distraction.

I'm getting older, and I'm tired of watching and wasting time on poor-to-mediocre ball. So, the hell with Slick Rick's past, and give him another opportunity. Because some other program will, and I wouldn't doubt that particular program will be formidable within a couple seasons. Bruce Pearl (as tom bradley mentioned on several occasions, LOL), Kelvin Sampson, Roy Williams ('Ole Roy probably knew about his players and the academic scandal), Calipari, Boeheim, Jim Larranaga, etc. All of these coaches have been accused or caught on some form of improprieties, but they still have jobs.

F it! I'm ready to win ball games, have relevancy, and watch March Madness in hopes of having deep runs into the NCAA's. If it's a possibility, then make it happen.

I can confirm here from Minny Chris is not here but he has interviewed both over the phone.

Again I don't go along with the argument a decent assistant won't sign on because it maybe for just a year. It happens. Good assistants can find jobs quickly so that is not a worry.

The worry is I dont think there is much impact they can make this year and leaving other 2 spots the same just reinforces that.

Regarding Pitino- I'm warming up to him, but hope the school very thoroughly researches the situation before offering. Pitino has a high ceiling but also could turn into a disaster. I'm not at all convinced he would turn things around. The NCAA would be watching us like a hawk.

First things first- Mullin. Regarding the new AC, I can't get excited at this point. I don't care who he hires. Mullin won't be here in 2020-21 so this is just painfully delaying the inevitable.

Watching the St. John's Basketball Program story is like watching a horror film. You keep hoping they will not go into the basement. They may or may not, but you know someone will get killed along the way, before the cavalry rides to the rescuer. Pardon the mixing of metaphors.
Let's get a staff in place and go forward.
If Mullin is gone, this is what the following 4 years will look like on redmen.com

Year 1 - Gotta give the coach time, had to deal with players leaving and got stuck with kids that no one wanted (Similar to Mullins first year)

Year 2 - Youngest Team in the country, players have to learn the system and get accustomed to Big East Basketball

Year 3 - Not many recruits coming in, Team isn't performing well, etc. Fans start complaining.. Rumblings that we need a new coach start.

Year 4 - Mixed results. Fans calling for the coaches head.

The problem is bigger than just the Athletic department. SJU cannot compete against other schools facilites or campus. Until some of the loud mouths start writing checks and big ones not much will change.

So get ready for another rebuild, and get ready to complain again in a few years.
He's what I'd do but I don't handle contracts at SJU, so it's a mute point.

Giving Lavin who stopped recruiting, and Mullin who never recruited, I'd give the next guy a short 4 year contract.
I just want to make sure that he's recruiting, and once I see that he's serious about recruiting here for the long term, I'd give him a 2 year extention.
If he turns it down then to me that means that he does want to recruit in the first place so good bye.

The big problem I see now is what credible ass't coach is actually going to want to come here? You are guaranteed 1, maybe 2 seasons at most. Why would you put your career and reputation on the line for that?
That's what a handful of us stated a few days ago.

Kinda off topic here.... I'm not actually big into believing about karma, but some folks are getting their karma. The people who thought Lavin was some kind of monster and went at him like they hated his guts (I wouldn't doubt some of the folks who helped push him out while coveting Mullin and bringing him in through the backdoor treated Lavin the same) are getting their comeuppance.

It looks like the "chickens are coming home to roost."
Dink the fact that Mullin is almost certainly not the answer, doesn’t mean that Lavin was.

Mike Cragg, in a statement released by St. John's: “Let me be clear and I said from the start, Coach Mullin is our head coach and we are not looking for another head coach.” #sjubb
Mullin will get his contract fulfilled. That seems clear. It’s not necessarily what the fans want but it’s gonna happen. Hopefully
Somehow we can salvage a roster and keep afloat until Mullin’s contract is through and we can move on from this coaching staff.
We are gonna stink next year
Yes we are. Chances are there will be others leaving. A short bench with a lot less talent is not a recipe for success.
Atleast with a new coach, we might stink next year, but we might have a future to look forward to.
With Mullin we'll stink next year, wity no future to look forward to.
So let the rebuild begin in 2 years.

Why even care about next year.

Totally agree. Nor was that my point. It's how things was handled by some folks (ie, making things extremely personal). A few of those same people who took Lavin to task are either mum or making up excuses for Mullin (although, a small faction of those same people have been vocal of their discontent with Mullin).

I disagree. I think if they replace 2 staff members we could still have a good future. If you have 2 staff members that possess both good coaching acumen and recruiting skills they can have success.. that's the thing though. Replacing just Matt A isn't going to be enough. If they bring in BOTH Hsu and Borman we actually could have something to be excited about

THREE new assistant coaches who have a clue how to coach and will recruit or the removal of Mullin. Not impressed with St. Jean (he also barely recruit) nor Richmond (he doesn't recruit).

True.. Ultimately a coaching staff of Pickney, Hsu and Borman or Phelps would do wonders. I think Pickney would really help get the most out of our front court and bring in some bigs.

I like it as it is a win win for all parties with the exception of the current 2 assistant coaches who don’t recruit. As opposed to the endless repetitive crabbing this points out a viable alternative that could become a pleasant reality.

Borman and Hsu are not being interviewed for different positions. There are not two positions opened.

Woeful news if true.
There’s been some buzz that Mitch will not return in his current role.
Are you sure, ‘96?
The Redmen nation turns it’s lonely eyes to you.
Lol.

I know.. I was just saying what would be a great staff that would make up for other shortcomings. Just wishful thinking that unfortunately would never happen

Pitino is a dishonest man, playing the "Woe is me, I didn't know this was happening under my watch."
He should never coach college basketball again, at any school.

My opinion has nothing to do with his personal life. Professionally, he's got no soul. He took no ownership was what was happening under his leadership.
