Coaching Alternatives
This stuff goes back and forth but Borman seems we’ll positioned for AC spot at this point.
There seem to be 2 schools of thought with the assistants- Borman and Hsu.
Makes me wonder if Hsu is someone's choice and Borman is another's. And part of the game of chicken is 2 assistant coaches.

Maybe there is still a possible outcome where staff winds up with Greg, Hsu & Borman with Mitch stepping down?

Maybe but I just see the only way Mitch being gone is if Chris is gone too.

I'm a fan from before I went to SJU in '71, and am a double grad '75 and '78--so I love the school, but I am not a constant poster on here, nor do we have special BB IQ (played intramurals at Nazareth H.S. and lots of street ball at Foster Park). Plus, I have zero inside information and don't need to be "in the know".

Unlike many on here, I'm not much into scoping out high school and pre-high school recruits, transfers, etc., etc., but I belong to the RW club donate to alma mater and bought tons of tickets over the years so my passion for St. John's basketball is unbounded (ask my family and friends).

I wish this site wasn't so negative and populated by some Know-It-Alls who only want to criticize and tear people down. These exaggerated opinions wear thin after a while.

Here's my take, the University hired a really good AD, let the man do his job. Some of the best executives in the business world are the ones who hire good people and give them the room to do their job. Backbiting and ill will toward CM and staff is counterproductive and frankly makes me less and less anxious to come on here and read posts.

Thoughts like this might have been posted already on here, if so, I apologize, but I had to get this off my chest.

Taking a hiatus for now.

Sorry I am confused; Slice left; no replacement, Matt left, no replacement is that not two openings? Is it because Mitch came on as a special Asst and moved into a coaching role when Slice left? If he moves back into the special asst role do we then have 2 openings or if one of the 2 new AC's go into the "special asst" role we would be able to hire 2 coaches. Can someone help me out here?

If that's the case, the only way we have a chance of success IMO is if we also get Hsu. A figurehead head coach only works when you have insanely talented AC's who put in tireless work and effort. Only 1 good one won't be enough IMO. But that being said, do we have any better chance of getting some top NY Ren's recruits or is the damage done with us already even if we hire Borman?
I can't think of a single program that has a figurehead coach that has any success. Watching a lot of tournament basketball this year, every team, from day one, seemed to have head coaches that were engaged and, in some cases, crazed, on every play.

Very well said. Scary how many on here have turned their desires and fantasies into "rumors." I don't think CM has shown he has what it takes to win on his own, he needs help. But I'm not logging in and pushing bogus tweets and misinformation as fact. Some need to get a grip and take a deep breath.

I'm sorry, but to the "give Mullin an extension and don't be mean to him" crowd, you will never be able to pee on our collective leg and tell us it's raining. Many of us will not be force fed failure every year, we will resist it. There is zero reason these results should be accepted. Maybe at St. Peter's...not St. John's. Sorry. And I don't care who you are...if you are a bad coach you should and will be called out for it and it will always be fair game. Not sure why some think depending on what your name is you are above any criticism.

Slice left after Year 1. Mitch moved from non coaching position to Slice's spot.
Matt has been gone a week and no replacement has been named yet

It always comes down to deliverables, but like the concept of Borman in the long-term (if there is a long-term. Would need assurances that Tabor stays committed and Kuminga comes. The Rens/IMG connections are important and would love to have a HS/AAU pipeline like we had at Riverside years ago. In the near-term, I think Hsu is the better fit. We need TWO PGs for next year and have more confidence that Hsu can navigate the grad transfer waters and hopefully pull a rabbit out of his hat with a second PG. Spoke to a mid major AC who said that Hsu will get "down and dirty" when it comes to recruiting. Meant it in a good way, not in a NCAA violations way. Said he's a hard worker/grind in the mold of Matt A. The ideal fit would be both Borman and Hsu.

Who are you calling out? You do understand it's hard for us to respond to voices in your head. Enough with the "some of you" crap. You have a problem with any of our POV's how about respond to our posts so we can debate any differences as adults.

You want a Crazed Head Coach ? You mean like the Hurley Bros ? Mullin was criticized up the Ying Yang for getting on Officials and you want 2 Lunatics on our sidelines ?

I am not sure why everyone is so hyped up about assistant coach hires. They have value, for sure, but they still operate under the leadership and philosphy of the head coach. Regardless of who the assistants are, Chris Mullin is the head coach and right now he is the face of the franchise and has bottom line responsibility for the program's success.

My question for the board is: Can anyone name Texas Tech's assistant coaches under Chris Beard? If you can, then can you enlighten us and identify what those coaches did that put them in the position of playing for the National Championship tonight?

The last consistent winning period at St. John's was under Lou Carnesecca. If memory serves me correctly his assistants during that time were Brian Mahoney, Al LoBalbo and Ron Rutledge. I know LoBalbo was known as a defensive guru (see article below) but coach Carenesecca was the face of the franchise and it would be hard for anyone to say otherwise.

Right now the program will live and die with Coach Mullin. Hopefully he will put together a group of assistants that will enhance his chances for success but regardless of who is around him, the buck will ultimately stop with him.

I'm not expecting wins, I'm expecting that we do everything within our power to put ourselves in a position to win. And that is not currently happening. We are in a horse race with 3 legs on our horse when everyone else has 4. There is a civil war and the 2 factions are: 1) Mullin experiment is over and 2) Give Mullin a break and give him more time. So that's who I'm referencing...#2. I do not have millions at my disposal to offer Cragg...but that doesn't mean I can't voice my displeasure with the situation we're in. I know I won't change a thing or affect anything, but doesn't mean fans must stay silent if they don't have millions. All I want is to know we are doing everything we can to set ourselves up for success like virtually every other program. No delusions of grandeur, just make smart decisions and smart contracts.

Borman and Hsu were both interviewed, Hsu is in Minny.

But nothing will happen until contract situation with Chris gets resolved and that has not happened yet. Meaning no hiring and no recruiting.

You make a fair point, but we are not Texas Tech, and one assistant coach is responsible for all of our recruiting...so for us, the assistant coach is an extremely important position. It will be interesting to see if that approach changes within the program or not, but as of today, that's the way it is.

Or , maybe just the others on here that like what you post , which are your pals .. Are you a Alum or not ? If so , write a check for a $100 and send it with a letter to President Bobby and demand the answer you seem to want . Don’t be surprised if you get the Check back with a letter saying thanks for your Input but , the Program is being Managed by the Administrstion and Athletic Director Mike Cragg.
