Coaching Alternatives

This is a complete clown show. At this point, I just want a coaching staff that is capable/willing to do what they're getting paid for. Is that asking too much?

You might have to wait two years my friend.
Pitino is a dishonest man, playing the "Woe is me, I didn't know this was happening under my watch."
He should never coach college basketball again, at any school.

My opinion has nothing to do with his personal life. Professionally, he's got no soul. He took no ownership was what was happening under his leadership.
But he will...and win.
Not a fan but whatever his warts, he wins.
I prefer Hurley but that looks DOA.
So whatever.

Apparently at St. John's the answer is a resounding YES it is too much to ask and has been for quite some time.

Knowing nothing, I’m taking the contrary view: we’ll get at least 2 AC changes.
Mitch is gone or in his old slot.
Anything less dooms the program next year and guarantees a total rebuild of both the roster and Staff in 2020-21–after the season and we’d be playing ‘catchup’.
Sorry, but I don’t think Cragg will allow such a weak hand to prevail through next season.
We shall see.

No, it is not too much to ask. But, it is ridiculous that it has to be asked.

It's just such a joke. The guy has a 20-52 conference record in 4 years. He doesn't like to do in game coaching. He doesn't replace no nothing assistants with credible coaches. He has zero interest in recruiting and had one guy do everything for him for 3 years.

How the hell is this even a conversation?

If Cragg doesn't demand changes to the staff and staff responsibilities, then either:

A. he has no more authority than any other A.D. we've had in the past or
B. he has no backbone and is afraid to rock Mullin's boat

I can't believe that someone who worked in Duke's athletic program for so many years would agree to come to St John's if he didn't have the authority to make appropriate changes in the athletic program and didn't have the cojones to do so.

Until proven otherwise, I believe that Cragg will move things forward in a positive direction.
Time will tell.

Can't believe posters are still mentioning Pitino. It was a pipe dream to begin with, and now, following the AD's announcement it's just an absurdity.

Good post, Mark.
Thanks man.

Whichever coach wins the national championship. Get all of our big donors to agree to give him $10M a year to be our associate head coach. Offer losing coach the same position at $7.5M per year.

Interesting article in the Post about Owen.

"“I saw the fire in coach’s eyes all the way back in the summertime when it would be easy to take a day off, just be a little lax,” Owens said. “But from Day 1 I got down there, coach was never relaxed. There wasn’t a day coach came in the gym and said, ‘We can get this time back.’ That’s why I always believed in him, believed in the vision he had for us.”

Owens had a terrific year, as the backbone to the Red Raiders’ stingy defense, blocking 2.4 shots per game. He also averaged 8.9 points and 5.8 rebounds, as Texas Tech reached its first-ever Final Four. But he traced part of his development to his three years at St. John’s, where he first emerged as one of the nation’s best shot-blockers. Owens holds no ill-will toward the program, and remains close to former teammates like Marvin Clark II, Bryan Trimble Jr. and Justin Simon. He nearly returned after getting his release.

“I loved St. John’s, I loved that program,” he said. “But I had to make a very tough decision and it ended up being the right decision, I feel.”

________

A telling comparison which another poster on this site (Sorry I don't recall who) made:

Owens and Heron both transferred.

Owens transferred from St. John's and made the Championship game of the NCAA Tournament.

Heron transferred from Auburn which last night in the Final Four to StJohn's and made the play in game of the NCAA Tournament.

That is the part that got me as well. Although he seemed to step it back a bit in the final few sentences.

I am just a fan, I do not know as much basketball as some of you on this site. I have been going to games since I was at St. Johns in the mid 70's. I saw almost all of Mullin's home games as a season ticket holder when I lived in NYC. Reading this site the last few weeks has been very "interesting" or depressing depending on the day.
It looks like CM will be back, I will be interested to see if he continues to play with the same "5 man out" philosophy or if he will pivot to a more traditional college game plan now that he has some size on the roster.
All those who said we had the most talented roster in the BE may have been correct, but what I saw, again as a fan, was this roster was horribly constructed for the college game. We had no inside presence. Roberts was too thin and maybe raw, Kieta was just not good enough. We played a system based on that lack of size, when we shot over 40% we won (most of the time), when we did not we lost. Out "athletic wings" could not get inside against teams with size and we were never in position to rebound offensively. So, now that we have size what system will we play? How will the new staff be constructed? Can we replace the lost point guard? There are a lot of questions. I believe Cragg is up to the job.
It has been so long since we were consistently good. Every year I go into it thinking "this is the year" and the last few years have been the most frustrating. You Gotta Believe!!

Having an increasingly time hard doing that.

This stuff goes back and forth but Borman seems we’ll positioned for AC spot at this point.

If that's the case, the only way we have a chance of success IMO is if we also get Hsu. A figurehead head coach only works when you have insanely talented AC's who put in tireless work and effort. Only 1 good one won't be enough IMO. But that being said, do we have any better chance of getting some top NY Ren's recruits or is the damage done with us already even if we hire Borman?

Way ahead of my skis here, but having Borman can’t hurt w NY Rens players obviously, but can’t forecast details to how it play out.
