Coaching Alternatives
The big problem I see now is what credible ass't coach is actually going to want to come here? You are guaranteed 1, maybe 2 seasons at most. Why would you put your career and reputation on the line for that?
It is not just the assistants. The rumors started because from what everyone said was Chris asked for an extension and didn't get it. That led people to believe that best option is an amicable breakup.

If you honestly believe Chris is the long term solution for this program then extend him. I am not saying I would do that I'm saying why would either side want the current situation.

Why would Chris want to come back a year from being a lame duck and why would Cragg want a HC not locked up for longer term? One way or the other, don't halfway it.
This is getting pathetic. Mullin would look so weak if he comes back after all of this. Stop being so indecisive and either go all in or resign. Too late for the former so choose the latter, please.
Exactly extend him then.

If you honestly believe he is the right man extend him then....but don't do this.

I don’t want him extended unless we can get out of paying him if we are going to go another direction after next year contractually. Obviously that’s not what extensions are for so I can’t see that happening. If not, I’d rather cut bait, suck next year and hope for a new coach the year after. Agreed that it’s not a good look right now and we are caught between a rock and a hard place. SJU’s hero has the program hostage right now. Doesn’t deserve an extension for sure and isn’t willing to part ways it seems. I’m not saying I blame him, but this certainly isn’t better for the SJU program.

I think the problem is the school can't eat his final two years. Mullin should do that right thing and accept a smaller buyout.

I'd hate for him to get extended.

Guys I am not personally saying I would extend him but if you are going to bring him back why would you do it under these circumstances...?

One or the other, extend him or cut him loose.

I get it $4 million ain't popcorn money but they could come up with it if they tried. Also giving him a contract in the first place without a reasonable buyout was stupid too...

The entire situation stinks. Mullin has not produced enough results to warrant an extension. He should have no problem finding an assistant coach with 2 yrs left on his contract.

I dislike comparsions to previous coaches, but can’t help myself in this instance. How is Mullin different from Lavin? Lavin was dismissed after the tournament because of lack of recruiting. Mullin has committed same mistake.

Not sure this comment makes any sense. The roster was full until Mack de-committed and we already have a 2020 commit.

Yes.

Absolutely.

St. John's should offer to extend Coach Mullin's contract....

...... provided, and only if the extension contains a "Reverse Buyout Clause" which gives St. John's the right to terminate him at anytime after expiration of the existing contract upon payment of a nominal fee thereby terminate all obligations.

The Reverse Buy out clause would create the illusion of Mullin having longevity with recruits and potential assistant coaches while St. John's being able to terminate him with nominal liability.

Mullin would never sign a contract with a buy out clause when he is guaranteed four million if they dismiss him. He called their bluff and showed Cragg that the AD is powerless when the men's basketball program is in question.

No one ever proposed that Mullin take money off the table. My proposal is for the money after expiration of the existing term not be guarnatied.

That's what a handful of us stated a few days ago.

Kinda off topic here.... I'm not actually big into believing about karma, but some folks are getting their karma. The people who thought Lavin was some kind of monster and went at him like they hated his guts (I wouldn't doubt some of the folks who helped push him out while coveting Mullin and bringing him in through the backdoor treated Lavin the same) are getting their comeuppance.

It looks like the "chickens are coming home to roost."

Offer him $200,000 for the next 10 years, and if you make the right hire, you won't even feel the effects of it.

Gawd, my head is spinning. No PG, the roster will take major hits.
Destination: 10th Place in the BEC in 2019-20 & beyond.
How else to take Cragg's categorical: "Chris Mullin is our head coach" and the following in NYC-ese: "...and we ain't lookin' for another coach."
Crystal clear that we're doomed.
But maybe we're not.
I dunno. it's always darkest before dawn and Final Four Weekend is the Olympics of NCAA Hoops--nothing shall take away that gloss.
So...wait until Tuesday to weep in full or...?
Meanwhile, let's enjoy some great hoops and root for Michigan State to take it all!
Lol.

The tournament is not over so this very well could be the same with no recruits coming and others leaving. Regardless this is a poor position to be in after 4 years.

Before entering into any extension or new agreement SJU better have full confidence that Cragg can handle it or bring in some expert help in getting it down on paper. Between Slice and Mullin it certainly looks like they were taken.

Only extension I'm offering CM is if the terms include the stipulation that he never coaches another game of men's basketball for St. John's again. Will wait for things to play out a while longer and hope that Cragg doesn't become part of the comedy team of decision makers of St. John's basketball.
