Coach Lav's contract

Why do some posters assume Lavin is such a caring person and is passionate about his players off the court? I'm not saying he's not that, but some posters on here talk like he's more ethical and cares more about his players than other coaches do. What makes you say that?

Desco, this article that was posted a few weeks ago by another poster provides a view that leads many of us to feel pretty good about the guy representing our favorite college basketball team. It say's zero about his coaching ability ( you are what your record is), but shows a bit about him as a person.

We heard the same thing about Norm, and I'm sure its true. But at the end of the day none of that means anything if Lavin can't win consistently, and he has yet to prove that he can. IMO the season needs to play out before determining if he deserves and extension or not. Besides, he aint going anywhere so there's no rush.

He's not going anywhere now, but why are you so sure he won't be poached at the end of the season? If he maintains a top 15 ranking and makes a run to the sweet sixteen he will attract interest. The pressure is on the AD to keep this program moving forward. It will not be any cheaper to bring in a big name coach, which is the surest way to stay in the top three or four of this conference.

When Lavin took this job all we all talked about was how he coached in LA and a storied program like UCLA and now he's in NYC coaching SJU. With his 'actress' wife where else would he possibly go. This was going to be his job yadda yadda. And now you are seriously talking about him being poached? By whom? When ESPN ranked the top 50 coaches in college hoops he wasn't mentioned. They tacked on 25 honorable mentions and he wasn't there either.

If a random school like Wake Forest wants Lavin then they are nuts. Lavin is a personality and loves the big city. He's not going to Winston Salem to coach Wake Forest or Omaha to coach Nebraska. This is his last college job likely unless he wants to do a cameo back home for shits and giggles a few years from now.

Come back to earth please. I hate that I have to add a negative tinge to everything but some of the comments lately are ridiculous.

Moose, if this coach maintains a top 15 ranking and makes a run to the NCAA sweet 16 he will be receiving great press and will be a coaching candidate for teams looking for a guy that can turn around a program. If the team flattens out and collapses in the NIT I agree with your view. I don't think you read the second sentence. If you did and react with a post like this, you got to calm down and give it a rest. It is not far fetched under that scenario.

Isn't that the point of a message board? Guess not. I guess I didn't realize I need to wave Pom Pom's 24/7. Time for another hiatus. This time for longer I think.

No need for another hiatus. The board is clearly split into three categories. 1 group believes the work Lavin has done this season has warranted a long term extension. Another believes he needs to provide more consistency and stability before an extension is offered. And a third group just flat out doesn't want Lavin at the head of this program no matter what. I fall under category 2, as do you and as do many. Fellow posters, please do not mistake that for meaning we are bitter complainers who can't enjoy the season going on right now.

I am enjoying the hell out of this season, but at the same time as a huge fan of the program I can't help but look ahead at the same time. Everyone loves the feeling of having a team to be proud of out on the court, and I look at the past and future roster and it bothers me that some are content with seeing this quality play once every four years.

People who think like me in regards to Lavins future aren't pessimists, aren't haters, aren't bitter complainers. So enough with the hostility from the people encouraging an extension. No not everyone agrees with you, doesn't make us less of fans, root for Lavin any less, or any of that. This season has been awesome, I am excited for it to continue, go redmen....

Excellent posts by Moose and Jack Williams. Just because people do not agree that Coach Lavin should be given an extension this minute does not believe they are Lavin haters as many on this board would like to believe. I for one am not aware of any Lavin hater and would be thrilled to see him succeed at SJU but the bottom line is that those who are in Jacks group 2 would like the season to play out and see where we stand on May 15 , 2015 after the season and spring recruiting period have terminated.
After two successive very mediocre seasons , one and a half years of very poor recruiting a little less than half a season of good play is just not a reason to extend the coach at this point in time IMHO.
Let's all be tolerant of each other's opinions and continue to enjoy the season and try to tone down the rhetoric if you don't agree with another posters opinion in terms of possibly extending Coach Lavin.

2 NCAAs (counting this yr) 2 NITs and cancer the other year, leading us into the new Big East ( lets face it he is a name and personality), decent deal going to Under Armour. Im not saying he's my top choice but i think we could of done a lot worse. Lets hope for a nice run and land some good recruits i.e. Sampson Diallo Freeman the Italian kid.

I say extend him. I was greatly concerned at the start of the season with a lack of player development and with Thomas and Adonis being ineligible. However, I have to admit I was dead wrong. Dom's success alone is enough to give me hope for some of the players riding the bench to make a jump next year to being contributors.
Also, Lav has a track record of picking up recruits late. If we continue with our on court success this year it can only help with recruiting.
I have a feeling that anyone that we want to potentially replace him wouldn't be willing to come here.
So again, I say extend.

He was FORCED to pick up recruits late to fill out the roster. And of the ones he picked up late this year one is long gone, another(Henderson) hasn't seen the light of day, and the other two have yet to prove that they can contribute at this level. So I wouldn't go overboard touting his late recruiting track record.

Was he "FORCED" to pick up Jordan and Obekpa to fill out the roster? He got both of them late so I think we need to give credit where it is due.

I'm in the "optimistic yet, wait and see camp." What concerns me is that Lav spoke non-stop about having the "youngest team in America." However, four years later, he's allowed the same situation to occur. For all the growth and maturity this group of seniors has shown, it would have been huge to have a few current freshmen to learn from them. Finally, in the CBS interview Lav was asked about next year's recruiting class, but I'm dying for someone to ask him how/why he neglected the '14 class.

Let's go Redmen!

Agreed. Can't put a bow on this "pig" 14 class if you want to be objective.

1. Dom was the highest-rated recruit in the first class.
2. Dom played significant quality minutes (not garbage time) for 3 straight years including being a starter and hitting a postseason game-winning shot.
3. Dom was nearly redshirted because he regressed as a Junior.

None of this applies to Balamou, Jones, Stewart, Adonis or Amar.

They are all 4-year players who needed to get minutes before you thrust them into the spotlight.

Dom made a jump this year because he showed flashes in prior years and he had a fire lit under him.

None of the above have shown that.

He did not pick up Sheed and CO late, those guys dragged out their recruitment and committed late. He picked up Thomas, Henderson, Stewart and Amar late because he needed to fill out the roster. There are reason why those 4 were available late. Anyhow I hope that both Samson and Diallo take the same route as Sheed and CO and commit late(or whenever) to us, but if they do not then Lavin's track record of picking up recruits late isn't going to help us very much going in to next season.

Orchestrate a solid season, show he can close gaping 15 recruiting hole & Lavin should merit extension, not now. On another note, it is quite appropriate to voice concerns about the state of the program without being branded a "hater". Conversely taking Lavin to task for even non issues like his sartorial preferences, only dilutes a credible critique of where SJU basketball is.

the only critique I would have in your assessment is that my belief is that Lavin will be assessed on the basis of what the team does this year, weighted more heavily than the go forth view of new year's roster and beyond. Should the team convincingly completes a strong season and ends up as a 4-6 seed in the tournament, he will likely get extended even if the 14-15 roster doesn't look so great.

Maybe but I disagree with that method. That is why forward thinkers have the most success Now if he parlays a good season with some recruits different story. Otherwise you are rewarding mediocrity and get stuck with an underachieving program going forward. .

Have to see what we can do in BE play before any decisions should be made, I also agree that recruiting should be a factor.
