Coach Lav's contract

Lavin supposedly has a hefty ESPN deal waiting for him. Regardless of that, it is not like he isn't trying or his heart is not in it. It's not as easy as some think to get kids to commit to Jamaica, Queens.

I still think he ends up on the west coast at Fox Sports, but either way, I doubt he'll be back. Whether it's easy to get kids to Queens, or not, that's what he's paid to do, and recently, he has done a very poor job of it.

D'Lo, Jakar, CO, Rysheed (with an asterisk), Garrett, Harkless even after committing to UCONN... that's serious talent right there. His in game coaching needs polishing, in my opinion, that's on the assistants. Some programs work vice versa. But for Jamaica, Queens, Lavin has brought real talent.

How and where do you get this info?

I don't know if that info about Lavin having a hefty deal at ESPN that was posted is true or not, however, it's not difficult to predict the likely scenario. If he continues to strike out on big name recruits, he would probably have no interest in coming back to coach a roster filled out with a bunch of second tier players, and would likely decide to leave. At that point, a return to TV would seem a natural fit.

Hey Chris,

Lav and his hardworking staff have done a lousy job recruiting at StJohn's.

Lav has been at StJ's during 6 recruiting cycles but the StJ's roster lacks depth, quality of numbers, and even distribution. Yeah, Lavin did good with the 2011 class with DLo, and Harkless and filling openings but neither Garrett nor Jakaar turned out to be top college players.

Most importantly, Lav and his hardworking staff have proven to be poor evaluators of talent:
Nurdine Lindsey,
Max Hooper,
Joey DeLaRosa,
Amar Alibegevic,
Jay Henderson,
Christian Jones**,
Felix Balamou,
Kieth Thomas,
and others who were not considered to be Big East talent by most observers and unfortunately none proved to be Big East or for that matter (in many some cases) even mid major talent.*

** [Query: can you confirm whether Lav or anyone from his hardworking staff ever in person saw Mr. Jones play before they offered him a scholarship?].

If Lav and his hardworking staff are such good recruiters then please explain why he has obtained just 2 commitments from high schoolers during the past 21 months despite the fact that there will be a mass exodus from this years roster? Please understand that as a result of the efforts of Lav and his hardworking staff, Christian Jones, Felix Balamou, and Amar Alibegevic, are possible starters next season.

Apparently that Pete Gillen comment was not from the real Pete Gillen. Sorry for mixup.

Otis, where were you when the team was 11-1? I'm a Lavin critic often, but come on. Man up & don't hide under a rock & wait until things go south.

So let me get this straight, the lack of consistent recruiting is the fault of Jamaica(estates) and the lack of in game coaching is the fault of the assistants? FWIW Garrett was far from a "serious" basketball talent. Baseball maybe.

So, 5 or 6 year extension?
I'm thinking we just give him the keys to the castle, right? AD? School President-for-life?

Thank god the posters here aren't in the admin. The ink would be dry already and the statue in front of the arena would already be sculpted.

These fanboards can be absolutely insane when it comes to coaching contracts etc

I remember in Norm's 1st year maybe we were 10 games into the schedule when we beat NC State and there were a ton of posters wanting to give Norm and extension right then.

So that's all we need to know about how crazy us as fans can be

That being said it's amazing how happy I was a week ago ( just over the current season not the recruiting ) and in 1 week how I have gone from surprising ecstatic to f'ing pissed.

I feel bad for our current seniors. They deserve better than this

Hopefully Jordan wakes up and straightens himself out and the team can make something of this season. Jordan should have a picture of DLO in his wallet and on his wall and look at what hard work and overcoming adversity can do to a player and a person

How do you think UCLA feels about Alfords season so far without Howland's players? 71-39 beat down at Utah today.

He'll just be the next in a long line of coaches run out of town.

Aside from recruiting, so much of next year will depend on Rysheed and Obekpa.

I cannot blame them for leaving, although IMHO, they are not ready. But if theyhave made up their minds, they better play their behinds off for the rest of the season.

Coach Lavin gets credit for recruiting Jakaar, CO and Rysheed. If the "cupboard is bare" partly because these three left early, I cannot lay blame with Lavin for that. He brought in talent and got it ready for the next level. That is a large part of his job.

Too early in the season to make a call on whether he gets extended or not.

IF we win 12 or 13 in the BE and IF make a little noise in the Tourney and IF there are no major game-losing coaching decisions and IF we get some pleasant recruiting / transfer news and IF there is no silliness along the way in terms of player drama... I say extend the HC for 3 more years.

Or just beat Nova (2x) and Duke!!

Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away...

Exactly, he didn't show up on the message board during that streak and now he is posting all the time. The sad thing is he is probably very happy right now.

Just hope Lavin is still the coach at St. John's next season as I want to purchase season tickets in the LAVINWOOD section!

Can't wait to he resumes his updates on Nova football and how they are going big time. LMAO
