Coach Lav's contract

Recently returned home from the game.

Don't want to hear about the fans. The place was packed and just dying to blow the roof off. It just didn't happen for us.

I noticed our core players looked beat with five minutes to go (especially CO and Dom). Regardless, the seniors and Chris gave all they had.

DLO is truly a great Johnny. I killed him for two years and now think he is one of my all-time favorites.

Regarding Lavin's extension, I am not sure why this is even a rational discussion. When you consider all aspects of the job (including recruiting), no coach in the Big East has been worse over the past 24 months. Perhaps he is tied with Oliver Purnell, who beat Xavier today and has three 3-star recruits signed for next year.

Lavin is also the third highest paid coach in the league (behind Wright and JTIII). From the university's perspective, he represents a terrible return on investment.

Thus, no extension consideration until conclusion of what appears to be a very challenging season. Without a solid scorer to complement D'Lo the prognosis is suspect at best Imo.

I notice that we a running a lot of new commercials on tv. Good to see. Hope it will attract some good kids.

The commercial with a bunch of kids pretending they are at a game is pretty annoying. I'm almost positive they aren't the loyal band of fans behind the basket which is kind of insulting.

I can't stand that commercial especially with the "one of the best 377 colleges" quote. I legitimately feel embarrassed when it's on.

I've wondered about that quote too. What is the goal by including it?

One of the most amateurish commercials I've ever seen. Obviously produced by the low bidder.

You are located in the greatest city in the world with so many ad agencies yet they go out and hire an agency from Albany.

We are..............

It's beyond belief, really. You obviously get what you pay for. Maybe the "CEO" Priest who was running the place at the time didn't respect or have a clue about what is great about SJU.

Having to play 5 players, w no quality backups is inexcusable at this point in Lavins tenure. What's worse is next year is looking bad also.. I see us involved w some good recruits, but none seem to be leaning towards us. One would think the prospect of PT would be enticing.

TO match the goal of the recruiting class?

When players on your team get suspended every single year, not only prospective recruits but also their parents take notice.

Guess Pete Gillen is not a Lav fan as he answers Brandon T;

@BrandonTierney: Needless to say, razor-thin depth already an issue for #SJU. This could derail potentially magical season in Queens. Stay tuned. #Jordan

@pgillen15: @BrandonTierney magical is a bit much for a team whose best win is @ unranked Syr or home vs Minn...usual circus in Queens w/ Coach Lav

This has nothing to do with basketball anymore. The fact of the matter is Lavin and his staff are embarrassing the university. Every year, we are seeing kids get kicked out and academic ineligible players. I don't even care what St. John's does for the rest of the year. Gempesaw needs to find a new coach at the conclusion of the season.

I agree Lavin hasn't worked out, and by no means implying he should be renewed. My concern is the same cast of characters are going to be in charge of the coaching search.

Unless a new group comes in with the intent of working hard in basketball program's best interest, to hire the right coach, nothing will change. The country club atmosphere must stop. Where else can you hire Mahoney, Fraschilla, Jarvis, Roberts, and Lavin and still have jobs?

Unless a guy like Abdelmassih (and I only mention him because he is an alum and tireless recruiter, something we need) feels this is his dream job, I don't know where they go for a coach. The next guy won't be offered what Lavin is making.

Seems like a bit of a potshot, even if true. Seems like there's no love lost there.

Bobby Hurley from Buffalo is perfect. NJ guy, asst at Wagner and doing a good job now. Young, hungry, and a local guy. Window to get him is this year or next. He is a coach on the rise. I have had enough of the instability. I just want to enjoy basketball not all of this off court drama every year.

The success of the next hire wI'll come down to the search, and that starts with the guys at the top: Gempeshaw and the AD, whether it's Monasch or someone new. They will set the instructions and parameters for any search commitee.

I have faith in president Bobby. And believe it or not it won't be the exact same alums who had input in the hiring of Mahoney, Fraschilla, Jarvis, Norm, and Lavin...if for no other reason then the simple fact that old men die eventually.

I'm finally off the Lavin bandwagon. He has to go after the season.

I'm with you Newsman. I'm finally done. I said to give him the extension after last week because we were 11- 1 and I thought it would help with recruiting. But there has just been too much of this now. I want him gone after this season. We should hire the coach at Army. He's a very good young coach and is friendly with both ex-Army coaches Bobby Knight and Mike Kryszewski. He's in their mold.

Zach Spiker is the Army Coach. He'd be perfect for us. I read an article where it said he speaks with both Knight and Kryszewski regularly.
