Coach Lav's contract

I'm finally off the Lavin bandwagon. He has to go after the season.

I'm with you Newsman. I'm finally done. I said to give him the extension after last week because we were 11- 1 and I thought it would help with recruiting. But there has just been too much of this now. I want him gone after this season. We should hire the coach at Army. He's a very good young coach and is friendly with both ex-Army coaches Bobby Knight and Mike Kryszewski. He's in their mold.
Zach Spiker is the Army Coach. He'd be perfect for us. I read an article where it said he speaks with both Knight and Kryszewski regularly.
And we have a Coach who spoke/speaks regularly with Keady and Wooden. Look where that has gotten us. We need results, not more talk. I am not giving up on the kids but I am on this Coach.

I agree Lavin hasn't worked out, and by no means implying he should be renewed. My concern is the same cast of characters are going to be in charge of the coaching search.

The "same cast of characters" are not going to be in charge of the coaching search.

Rest assured that President Gempesaw is not Harrington. Gempesaw is engaged and actually cares about the program succeeding. I am told that Mr. Monarch will likely not be employed by StJohn's.

The success of the next hire wI'll come down to the search, and that starts with the guys at the top: Gempeshaw and the AD, whether it's Monasch or someone new. They will set the instructions and parameters for any search commitee.

I have faith in president Bobby. And believe it or not it won't be the exact same alums who had input in the hiring of Mahoney, Fraschilla, Jarvis, Norm, and Lavin...if for no other reason then the simple fact that old men die eventually.

I really don't know enough about Gempeshaw to have an opinion. That said, with so many components involved in running an entire university, I would imagine he will limit his involvement to deciding who is going to lead the search. My dream is that he cleans house in the athletic department. It is warranted, but would entail a second search (for a new AD). I am not sure he would want to take that on.

Yes, but make no mistake about it, this is a HUGE component of the university. As CEO, he had better be involved in this search.

That's encouraging to hear Otis.
I've hearn mixed things about Monasch, but at this point I'd be leaning towards starting with a clean slate, and that means a new AD.

No surprises from our faithful. The talk was precisely the same when Obekpa was defecting. Let this Jordan saga play out, but in the meantime get the frustration out of your system. Predictably it only took two losses and one quitter to reverse the positive mojo around here. If we go 6-12 in the BE, the next chapter will be predictable enough. If Jordan comes back and plays like a first team BE team player, you'll be calling Lavin a genius. I'm not big into predictions, but if I were, the first 12 game results would have surprised me. Advice - it's not all that important in my life, even if this is the sports team I am most passionate about. Don't sell these kids short. If they had our attitude, they'd cash their chips and bail on the season, but they won't and we shouldn't

I agree 100%. I will support the players this year, but there needs to be a change unless they miraculously have a run in the tournament and sign a slew of kids in the spring (which i highly doubt if an extension is not in place). We will know by the end of the Big East regular season which way this ship is sailing.

IMO Lavin made 3 off the court decisions that were popular with the fan base but have helped send him back to ESPN.
1 In Feb of 2013 he should have told D'Angelo his conduct was apprehensible and warranted a season ending suspension but for the sake of the team ( and Lavin's benefit) he was limiting it to one game
2 On the day prior to last year's Vill game he should have called Orlando, congratulated him on the birth of his child and told him that since mother and baby were doing fine a car would pick Orlando at the hospital Sat 9am drive to Philly for the game and have him back at the hospital by 7pm where he could spend the next 3 days with family
3 This past Apr he should have told Tiny that one of his ass't. was leaving , the job was his and the letter of intent was waiting for Whitehead's signature.

Guess Pete Gillen is not a Lav fan as he answers Brandon T;

@BrandonTierney: Needless to say, razor-thin depth already an issue for #SJU. This could derail potentially magical season in Queens. Stay tuned. #Jordan

@pgillen15: @BrandonTierney magical is a bit much for a team whose best win is @ unranked Syr or home vs Minn...usual circus in Queens w/ Coach Lav

Amazing how a fired coach can stab a working coach in the back. Talk about HATERS !!!!

Of the three, I really thought Sanchez, since the kid was born already, could have decided to play at Nova in Philly in a HUGE game for us. We could have had him on a plane from Philly to Boston in no time flat, and a car service from Boston to Providence in no time. I have a strong feeling that with Sanchez that he was going to see his kid no matter what Lavin told him. Too bad - it essentially cost us a shot at a win that could have guaranteed an at large bid, effectively flushing the season. I said it at the time, but the majority of posters disagreed.

Go and look at what he's accomplished at Army in the few years that he's been there. You might look and say, so what, but when you compare it to what every other coach has done there, there are only two Army coaches who compare to him and that's Knight and Kryzszewski.

So, 5 or 6 year extension?
I'm thinking we just give him the keys to the castle, right? AD? School President-for-life?

Thank god the posters here aren't in the admin. The ink would be dry already and the statue in front of the arena would already be sculpted.

These fanboards can be absolutely insane when it comes to coaching contracts etc

I remember in Norm's 1st year maybe we were 10 games into the schedule when we beat NC State and there were a ton of posters wanting to give Norm and extension right then.

So that's all we need to know about how crazy us as fans can be

That being said it's amazing how happy I was a week ago ( just over the current season not the recruiting ) and in 1 week how I have gone from surprising ecstatic to f'ing pissed.

I feel bad for our current seniors. They deserve better than this

Hopefully Jordan wakes up and straightens himself out and the team can make something of this season. Jordan should have a picture of DLO in his wallet and on his wall and look at what hard work and overcoming adversity can do to a player and a person

Yep, I was real happy also. I was thinking maybe another surprising season like LKavin first year. It's like someone playing a bad joke on us every yeary. I don't think we're meant to be happy about our team.
If they're out of ncaa talk and he wants to come back, I guess I'd take him back only because if they win the B.E. tourny and get in that way.
Only reason that I'd let him come back? Is for the seniors, they to go out with a bang.

One cancer has to ruin it for the rest. A damn shame

He worked under Gregg Marshall , John Beilen and Steve Donaghue, what a great pedigree and learned from some of the very best who were successful under difficult conditions.
He would be my number one candidate.

This is amazing news, because prior to hearing this, I had no faith that the administration had any clue on how to find the right candidates.

Lavin supposedly has a hefty ESPN deal waiting for him. Regardless of that, it is not like he isn't trying or his heart is not in it. It's not as easy as some think to get kids to commit to Jamaica, Queens.

I still think he ends up on the west coast at Fox Sports, but either way, I doubt he'll be back. Whether it's easy to get kids to Queens, or not, that's what he's paid to do, and recently, he has done a very poor job of it.
