Coach Kim Leaves for Michigan

Without knowing for certain, I would guess that even as a ranked team, NCAA bid, and 2nd in the Big East, attendance averaged in the hundreds, not thousands. A women's program that doesn't generate much money cannot afford to pay a coach a huge salary. I'm sure this is a big step financially, and SJU likely paid her a relatively small salary compared to schools that actually put fans in the seats.

It's always something at SJU. Any time we have a little success something happens to ruin it. Lavin's illness was bad luck but losing Kim puts us back in the laughingstock category. Even when we invest some bucks on the men's side we don't get our money's worth. I surrender. Nothing's ever going to change even if Monasch were thrown out as he should be. Time to look for a Hofstra website.

Christmas in April!

Does anyone here think Michigan isn't a lot better job than STJ?

With all due respect, no I don't think it's better. I'm no women's college BB expert, but they don't appear to have much history and Coach Kim was building quite a program here. I'm not on this board everyday reading your thoughts and those of our fellow Johnnies fans because I believe programs like Michigan are better :silly:

Having said that, Coach Kim thinks it's a better opportunity, so I wish her well. She is a class act and represented our University very well.

I'm no expert either but did STJ women's ball have much history before this recent run?

Women's college BB did not become relevant until 1997. That is the year the WNBA began signing college girls with the potential for professional careers. Recruiting became the central focus of women's teams and those that got the top high school talent became dominant. Geno Auriemma earned a 10th of his $1.6 million salary back then. SJ always treated women sports as a necessary evil until they finally hired KBA. Now there is TV money and exposure that attracts a wider pool of students. To be competitive, a Big East school needs to pay a coach a minimum of $250K. Four Big East schools (Lville, Uconn, ND and Rutgers) pay their women's coaches over $500K.
SJ needs to keep the momentum going in signing top high school girls or it will be the Joe Mullaney days again.

Any idea as to what KBA was earning at St. John's ?[/quote

I'm going to guess $200-250K, but that's just a guess, not educated at all

no way was she making 250grand a yr probably like 100 grand
but if jerky doubles her salary she stays a johnny :yell:

the school is run by idiots & should start looking into replacing clergy in powerful positions the real competition is jetting by them

There is no way she makes that little, especially for someone who has been at the school for a decade.

For the 2010-11 season, the following were big east salaries (not counting bonus or outside money):

UConn 1.6 mil
Rutgers 985,000
Notre Dame 615,991
Louisville 575,000
West Virginia 375,000

And since he was brought up as a possible replacement, during that season Marist's coach got 177,669

Della she was not making anywhere near what the five programs you listed were paying.
Nor was she getting the 200-250 that was speculated.
A complete lack of planning by the AD, this one could be seen a mile away.
Just remember a few years ago when the Maven posted that Coach Kim and her staff went for a visit to Hofstra, that speaks volumes.
This has zero to do with suburbia, cost of living, better academics, larger yard, the GW Bridge, traffic, commuting, etc. This all has to do with incompetence.

FYI........... 2011 attendance figures for women's program's

http://fs.ncaa.org/Docs/stats/w_basketball_RB/reports/Attend/11att.pdf

Top 50 in attendance listed first followed by attendance figures for all D1 schools.

This list shows that attendance figures are irrelevant in WBB. Other than the perrenial top 10 schools, if you get 1,500 - 2,000 fans in the seats, you are doing ok. TV money rules the roost for the women's game just as it does the men's game. The more you are TV, the more $$.
KBA did not go to Michigan because of their great attendance, the possibility her kids could attend school there 8 years down the road or the great Michigan weather. She left due to lack of respect...... Period!

I'm sure the soccer and baseball coaches will be next. I wonder how Repole feels about his investment and this year's incoming class. How do you let Kim walk after what she accomplished?? Wonder what effect this will have on female donations. If this were a real business enterprise there would be more heads rolling than basketballs.

She did a great job at st johns but my only issue with her is that it seemed she gave st johns a back handed slap in the face when she said she was blown away by the facilities and resources at Michigan. She didnt have to say that as her going away "gift" to the school. Although I would be the first to agree that we should spend more on athletics and facilities, we've done pretty darn good over the years for a school with limited resources. Maybe one day the st johns women will meet the mean and rich wolverines and kick their butt.

There is no reason why St. John's should have ever let Barnes Arico walk over money. She served as a great representative of the University both on and off of the court. Barnes Arico should have been embraced by St. John's as a positive face of the University but instead she will be remembered as another example of president Harrington's strive for mediocrity.

Harrington and his hand picked followers who serve as members of the St. John's Board of Trustees have again shown their poor judgement.

Sincere best wishes to Coach Barnes Arico of continuing her successful basketball coaching career.

Fantastic Post Otis. We let a great coach leave in the prime of her career when we could have had a lifer.
A real bloody shame.

I'd be blown away by the $52 million renvoation my future school was putting into my future facility too.

I wasn't saying that she was in that range, just providing a comparison for others in the Big East. And if she wasn't even making $200,000 after being her for a decade and doing what she has done the past three seasons, NO ONE should be surprised that she has left.

What a disgrace. Harrington and his crew are still intent on ruining the sports programs of this university. Thank God oldfan and his crew did not win out in trying to get Norm an extension or the mens program would've been extinct by now.

I am not surprised at all but I repeat again this all could have been avoided with an iota of planning.

Really bad news for SJU. But SJU just made it clear that the women's program is not high on their priority list.

How much TV money do you think St John's makes from women's basketball? I am presuming that that AD looked at our women's program as a business unit, and decided how much they could or could not spend to make the program sustainable. Of course, like many coaches, Coach Barnes waited for her breakout season to make her move. You can be pretty sure that the salary at Michigan was beyond what the school would have considered - and now the program takes a huge step backwards.

I wonder if Megan Duffy has second thoughts regarding leaving the Johnnie coaching staff ,now that KBA has departed. Strange timing with 2 of the staff now gone.
