Coach Kim Leaves for Michigan

Congrats to Kim. Great coach, even better person.

Big loss for us. Probably felt she took the program as far as it could go.

She'll do great at Ann Arbor.

Michigan is a no brainer.

Prestigious university, better facilities, an engaged student body, no more brutal commutes over the GW bridge from NJ, a lower cost of living on a relative basis, the ability to live in a great college town, and of course, more $$$$.

I guess her husband has a career that allows him to move. Good for Kim; who's available?

quality of life issues could be a factor, but they would be the same factor in coach Lavin's case.

Not really as their lifestyle choices are significantly different. 3 kids and the suburbs vs. an acting career and the big smoke.

Big 10 and Michigan are a step down in women's hoops IMO.
As far as the "commute", she spent 3 years at Adelphi and 10 at SJ so the commuting was by choice. I am sure it would have been an easier commute from Roslyn or Great Neck.
I am also sure there was enough $$ to keep her.
Being the 4th choice in a doormat program is not impressive so she must have been looking to bolt for "personal" reasons.

While some of you are slobbering over KBA's acceptance of the head coaching job at Michigan, it is SJ that is hurting now with this surprise departure.
Maybe it is time to bring in a high school coach with local name recognition. I put forth the name of Ruth Lovelace who has shown she is a tough as nails boys basketball coach at Boys and Girls High.

Growing up, Lovelace played basketball at Boys & Girls and went on to Hilbert College, where she became a Junior College All-American. She later played at Seton Hall University and thanks her coach, Phyllis Mangina, for being a mentor for her.

Lovelace gives back to her community and school, and has earned the nickname that her players once gave her: Coach Love.

Wow, that stinks! Unbelievable that they let her get away...Terrible job by the administration and doesn't bode well for the athletic department as a whole...She deserved to be here until she retired and deserved to be paid for what she has done for the program...An absolute shame that this has happened

Excellent post and you hit the nail on the head.
A big loss which never should have happened.

Coach Kim did what is best for her & her family I can respect that.Good Luck

But The St.J's athletic Dept again See {Coach Mcquire & Lachick} let a Great Coach in their prime leave over salary
This woman took the bottom feeder Johnny womens program & made then into ncaa contenders over 10yrs.
The Tan man Moanasch should have given her a Big raise after this seasons run :yell:
Dont be surprised she win a NCAA title at Mich

Another very accurate post.

How do we know Moanasch didn't offer her a raise? I'm guessing he probably did.
Bottom line is even if we upped her salary, we were gonna lose a bidding war with Michigan.

No we were not, her entire family is here and it was in her interest to stay close to them.
Bad, bad job by the admin.

Correct.
Correct, but I don't believe she was paid enough to live in Roslyn or Great Neck, though she deserved it.
Correct again.
Personal reasons or a lack of appreciation?

Quality of life with three children is very important. My cousin teaches at the University of Michigan. He has a home less than 10 minutes from campus that is like a mansion. His backyard is as big as a football field. Something that size in New York would be over 2 million, He was able to buy it about four years ago for $350,000.00. His daughter attends attends a high school affiliated with the university that is like being in a private school. There is no way that St Johns could compete with the fringe benefits offered at Michigan.

Funny you should mention Lovelace. I was thinking about her earlier today as a replacement for Kim. Interesting post.

Coach Lapchick was forced to retire at age 65. That wasn't the fault of the Athletic Dept., that was University Policy. We can agree that it wasn't the smartest policy in the world, but I don't think the Athletic Dept. deserves the rap.

Coach McGuire was paid well, for the time, at St. John's. In fact, the 2012 book ACC Basketball (which is about the first 2 decades of the ACC) specifically cited that Frank was the highest paid basketball coach in the country when he was at St. John's. Granted, I was shocked when I read that. I'm traveling at the moment but I think the figure was somewhere in the neighborhood of $4,500 in 1949. When I get back home I can look it up. You can believe it or not.

He left for UNC because he thought it would be better for his son.

From afar, her decision appears to be driven by more than just money. Just a guess on my part. Then again, if she was offered a Vivian Stringer like contract who knows what would have happened.

So sorry to see you go, Coach
Thanks for making St John's relevant in womens basketball
Best of luck in the future
I only hope the next coach can keep the program moving forward
He/She will have plenty of talent to work with

JSJ, perhaps I should have been more specific with reference to the portions of the post I was quoting.
There is no point in commenting on Coach Lapchick or McGuire as their departures occurred decades ago.
I was only referring to Coach Kim who did an excellent job at SJU and had no desire to leave the NYC area.
Chris Monasch should have looked after her the day the season ended. It is obvious that she is well respected by her peers and if SJU was not going to show her the love and respect she deserved another school would.
Unfortunately it happened and we are the big losers.

Does anyone here think Michigan isn't a lot better job than STJ?

With all due respect, no I don't think it's better. I'm no women's college BB expert, but they don't appear to have much history and Coach Kim was building quite a program here. I'm not on this board everyday reading your thoughts and those of our fellow Johnnies fans because I believe programs like Michigan are better :silly:

Having said that, Coach Kim thinks it's a better opportunity, so I wish her well. She is a class act and represented our University very well.

I'm no expert either but did STJ women's ball have much history before this recent run?

Sure they did , they were Big East champs back in the eighties when coached by John Kress's wife who wanted off Long Island, maybe like Kim. She got a coaching job down south and Kress followed her regrettably for SJU and perhaps him later as the marriage dissolved. However John had great success at
College of Charleston.

I still believe the Michigan job is no better, other than perceived by the unknowing. The state of Michigan has had many problems with Detroit on the verge of bankruptcy. Perhaps the isolation on campuses prevents this kind of awareness. SJU has no track record of hiring good coaches and was lucky to get an up and comer like Kim at the time. Hopefully the mistakes of the past will not be continued.

Media guide goes back to 74. I see her and her replacement for like 3 yrs did well. Then they hired some guy Mullaney who sucked for like a decade. Then after him it got even worse.

Maybe not, but when you're on a good run, why end it? We know plenty of coaches who made programs into powers in many sports (Geno and Calhoun at UConn, Coach K at Duke, Frank Beamer in football at VT, Rich Rodriguez in football at WVA as some examples). We've also seen plentry who leave a good situation and never find the magic again (PJ after leaving Seton Hall, Rollie leaving Nova, Rich Rodriguez in football at Michigan). The Big East and NYC are big draws, but hopefully she finds what she's looking for in Michigan.
