Chris Obekpa

I hope he watched or better still was at this game as a rebound/shot-blocker like him would greatly improve this team.

And I hope he listened closely to the comments of UConn's Shabazz Napier who called out his teammates for quitting. Very classy. And way to impress a possible recruit. Stay home Christopher....UConn is falling apart.

He's visiting UCONN this weekend so I highly doubt he saw any of the game.

Great! He saw UCONN lose handily to Marquette.

Doesn't UConn also have Andre Drummond? Aren't they ineligible to play in the NCAA tournament next year? What's the attraction for big guys like Obekpa right now?

Not only that but UConn is on a postseason ban for 2013

I would say probably the pipeline of good big men they produce. Okeafor & Thabeet come to mind in the most recent past.

Success in college but neither of those guys would go on to be good pros...Maybe big men would be better prepared for the NBA elsewhere and that's something that should be taken into consideration

Okafor is averaging a double-double for his career......and Thabeet is only in his 2nd or 3rd year. I would say that for at least okafor, he has done pretty well.....

Uconn has sanctions though and no tourney for next 2 years. In addition, Calhoun is on verge of retirement. He has done well recruiting and developing big guys. He also has a big doghouse and its easy for even good players to be sucked into it. See Oriakhi and Roscoe Smith as well as DeAndre Daniels. It amazes me they can't find any time for a top 10 player like Daniels, considering they're stinking it up this year. They played the best game of their year against us. If Daniels were at SJU he'd be starting at the PF spot and IMO developing a ton more than he is at Uconn. Like I said, Obekpa needs to watch the UCLA tape and see why it's a no brainer to be at SJU.

As far as his friend Balamou goes, I think he's a worthwhile pickup. I watched more of him and he's an amazing athlete with great speed and a great motor. He has the ability to be a really elite defender and is a press and run type of player. No doubt he's being heavily considered in large part due to Obekpa. It's just that we need a ton of bodies and Balamou actually fits the mold of athletic defender and allows us to really press. It also doesn't preclude us from grabbing shooters etc. I also don't think he's a bad shooter as much as he doesn't look to it too much. Certainly not an elite pickup, but we need depth and his motor and athleticism fit our style. A style that killed ucla yesterday. Even if it's a package to land the to, it's a worthwhile one IMO with all the ships we have available.

 Great post Marcus.

FWIW, I expect us to get commitments from Felix, Obekpa and Jakaar. Throw in an early verbal from Galan and we are on our way. Tea leaves, not definitive info driving this. Just one man's gut and educated feeling.

I'd be ecstatic over that

Remember.Branch will not be eligible untill 2nd semester. Dont want to play 1st semester w 0 backup guards, thus making Balamou or a Parga essential. Need 4 overall guards anyway.

Agree... And paultz, I'd love that class.

Unfortunately it tells us almost nothing important. We need obekpa a heck of a lot more than Balamou, but both would be more than fine.
