Chris Obekpa

I know they have some good talent coming in, but what does Providence offer a kid? Providence, RI is not a booming city. From what I have heard, Providence is not really a fun school. The program hasn't been good in a while. They play in a minor league arena. Am I missing something. If I am a kid choosing between SJU and Providence the decision is pretty easy. Of course I am bias but I don't think its even close.

I'm thinking that coach lavin has something up his sleeve....he is too confident at this point that he is going to bring in a top recruiting class..he is known as a man of his word....obviously he isn't allowed to talk about recruits by name, but i'm thinking he has something lined up thats going to surprise most board members here...the pieces are going to start coming together very soon...we just need to be patient as a fan base

It's honestly nonsensical...makes me really wonder how legit that program is, especially after looking at their current roster situation.....unless they plan on having some mass exodus, how are they fitting all these new guys on the roster...will be interesting to see what happens

I agree with you on both accounts rawdog. Minus something going on in that program, I don't see Lav losing to Cooley and Providence. I also agree that Lavin is magic when it comes to recruiting and no way with the NY media could he be saying what he says and not deliver. The suspense! I think we will be fine. Hopefully, we win 2 of 3 to close it out (or all 3) win a BET game or two, get some momentum and the chips will settle. This team was 2 mid major losses and a heartbreaker to Nova away from being around 7/8 wins in the BE and 17 wins overall. I was thinking today that last years team as juniors, the NIT year, went 6-12 in the BE, won the BET game of course vs UCONN and had some decent non conference wins (Temple and Siena). This team might win 6 or 7 BE games as freshmen with no depth.

Im also suprised at the success Cooley is havimg. He did get a great recruiting class and is still in the mix for Sampson and Obekpa among others.

According to their schollie tracker on Friar Blog, they have 10 scholarship players. 4 guys listed on the roster aren't on scholarship: Carter, Grant, Murray, and Bancroft. Don't know if that's true, but assuming it is...

They had 3 kids sign LOI in the fall: Ledo, Dunn, and Fortune. That gives them 13 scholarships for next season so they should be done, but....

Then Sidiki transferred in.

And now they're going ALL OUT for Noel, Obekpa, and Sampson.

Plus their board claims that Orlando Sanchez is all but signed.

I don't necessarily believe the last part, but even still ... where are all these additional scholarships from?

Maybe they don't think somebody's going to qualify? Ledo certainly wouldn't surprise me - but that doesn't explain why they're after every big man on the east coast.

What I cant understand ,besides scholis, Is why every big man on the east coast is considering Providence, Whats the appeal?

Just because they are recruiting numerous big men doesn't mean they think they can sign them all. Maybe first to commit and they are done and must back off of the rest.

Having lived in New England for almost 40 years now, I can tell you Providence is a really neat town.
They are similar to yukon in that everyone around is on the their bandwagon when they are good.
When Pitino was there, you couldn't get a ticket.
Cooley is a terrific recruiter and will get it done there.
As a basketball only school, I'm happy for them.

In my opinion Providence is a great city to go to school in. It has Federal Hill, Thyer Street.and other attractions that make rs but lacked the skills amd endded up at D2 Stonehillit an interesting city with a college flair due to a number of area colleges Brown, RISDI, Bryant, Roger Williams, Rhoda Island Oollege, Johnson & Wales, and others.

I have been to 3 St.John's v. Providence College basketball games at "the Dunk" and was impressed by the rowdy providence students that sit under the basket and cheer for their team. I hope St.John's beats Providence every time we play them but I wish PC good luck against most other schools.

As you may know Cooley grew up in tough South Providence and wanted to attend and play for the Friers but lacked the skills so he ended up at D2 Stonehill. Cooley was one of nine children who was taken in by neighbors after his family allegedly could not care for him. Cooley is a nice story unto himself.

So, I posed a question to the Friar faithful on their board this morning; concerning how many scholarships they have left. And their fans admitted they're already out of schollies, and actually are one over the limit, technically.

Yet they're still pursuing 5 guys hard, including Sampson, Obekpa, and Sanchez. And they expect to sign a combination of them. (Not sure how realistic their expectations are but that's another story).

Anyway none of them see scholarships as an issue. Basically they say that lots of pieces will be moving in the off-season, and only 5 guys are guaranteed to return. Sounds like Cooley is asking a bunch of people to transfer so he can mold his own team.

there also after another 2012 guard from Indiana.

RT @KyleNeddenriep: Providence was in to see 2012 Traders Point (IN) guard Mislav Brzoja today.

It's stuff like this where I hope Providence's plan falls flat on its face.

That's b.s. to do that to those kids.

A buddy of mine that went to Providence said the word is that Dixon and Gilbaye are both going to Towson next year so that frees up 2 scholarships (still only 1 extra if this actually happens becasue there one over the limit right now with Sidiki). if more than one of their targets commit they will need to start forcing more kids out.

^^^ I've heard that as well. We dont need to worry about what they are doing just gotta worry about us. They appear to be doing a great job so far but they are still in the bottom of the conference and have alot of work to do. I wish them luck but we should't be concerned with them. We have a proven staff and even though we took a little step back this year things will work out and we'll be on top soon enough

I was at the Cincy vs Lousiville game and Obekpa was there. We have our hands full with this one.
Hopefully he will chose us.

Can you expand? He was on a visit like we knew he'd be. Any idea why our hands are full?

I am not sure if it was official visit or him just enjoying the game. I am sure he was more excited to be there @ that game than any of our games when MSG is 1/10th full. Call me crazy but i am sure that plays a factor on decisions.
I hope he will chose SJU but i feel our competitors bring more to the table. If this kid is as good as they say than he should not have a problem starting for any team mentioned above. If Lavin pulls this one off i will give him tremendous credit. If he does not i would not be surprised.

Also, Zagoria confirmed-Huge NCAA Tourney resume win for Cincy over Louisville behind 22 pts from Cashmere Wright. 6-9 shot-blocker Chris Obekpa attended the game.
