Per Zags....

Obekpa tallied 15 points, 17 rebounds and 7 blocks in the semis and then tired somewhat before notching 4 points, 10 rebounds and 6 blocks in the final.

“He really was a factor in the first game,” longtime New York recruiting expert Tom Konchalski told SNY.tv. “He changes the game defensively. He’s one of the best shot-blockers around.”

Obekpa’s handlers at Our Savior continue not to make Obekpa available for interviews and have been silent themselves, so it is difficult to get an accurate read on his thoughts regarding college.

Still, the conventional wisdom now is that St. John’s has re-emerged as a front-runner ahead of Cincinnati, perhaps in part because of the recent incident related to several Bearcats.

Never put two and two together. I would almost think UC losing Ellis would make them more attractive because of increased playing time, BUT as a parent seeing yet another discipline problem from a team member would lead me to steer my kid away from the institution.

I can remember my kid being enamored with a football program while on a recruiting trip and me listening to the HC and thinking he was a used car salesman and dreading having to tell my kid this isn't the place for you. I got lucky because my kid missed the vibe i picked up talking to the guy but saw a team with no discipline get their butts handed to them and opted for other avenues.

I am not saying Cronin is a used car salesman, just saying as a parent yet another discipline issue would throw up warnings for me that would lead me to steer my kid elsewhere. I actually Cronin is a pretty good coach and i know the UC dean is committed to doing things the right way ( which is why Huggy is gone in the first place) but i personally would want my kid around a program with a better track record. Just a parent's take.

Have no clue where Zagoria got such garbage information. One kid who has had a very rough past (witnessed his mother being murdered) being involved in an incident where no charges were ever filed, doesn't really constitute as "discipline problems". Every senior has graduated in the 6 years Mick has been head coach and Cincinnati I believe had the Big East scholar athlete of the year. Claiming that was the reason for this "change of heart" is simply untrue, his handlers probably struck a better deal with St. Johns.

Lots of hate for SJU, nice. Oh yeah that whole Xavier/UC thing last year has nothing to do with the discipline of a team. Those suspensions were a joke. Nonetheless cant hate Lavin for being a good recruiter and not giving up until the LOI is signed.

Please go away. This is a SJU board.

Hahahaha - the bitterness is hilarious! His handlers didn't get a better deal from St. John's - the NCAA has been all over St. John's for a while now...His handlers realized what a piss poor job Cincinnati has done to prepare their players for the NBA....The job that staff did with Yancy Gates is downright criminal...There was a damning quote from an NBA scout about how poor of a job they did developing Gates and it's pretty obvious that the entire NBA knows how terrible they are

Contrast that with the NBA level staff that St. John's has with Lavin, Dunlap, Rico Hines and throw in Gene Keady and it's really a no brainer when it comes to deciding between the two schools...And that's without even considering NYC vs. Cincinnati and the publicity these kids get here vs. there, playing your homes games at MSG, etc.

Lets not talk bad about Cincinnati, it shines a bad light on ourselves. And lets not pretend like Cronin is incapable of developing players, Sean Kilpatrick was a Norm recruit, and hes developed into an all BigEast player who has shredded us on more than one occasion.

If Opekba does commit to us, and I hope he does, lets be grateful and humble about it, and not rub it in the face of another bigeast team who quite frankly has been better then us for the last decade.

Obviously this is a St. Johns board so I am not going to get into a huge argument here, but seriously? if St. Johns is so great why has the school been irrelevant nationally since what, Chris Mullen era late 80's-early 90's? Bottom line is one school is coming off a Sweet 16 appearance and is expected to be a top 25 team next year and the other, well isn't.

SJU is in a rebuilding process and maybe not this coming year, but starting next year, they will be a perenial top 25 team. Look at the level of recruits we have been getting and our coaching staff.

We are rebuilding. UC is built to win NOW. Big, big difference. We only started to get back on the scene a few years ago with Lavin coming on board. We are starting to get BIG recruits instead of second tier. Cincy is not a dominant team...we beat you with a freshman team and you guys went to the sweet 16. That says something. Cincy will never be a powerhouse...just a solid not great team. I think SJ's future is much greater than Cincy's. SJ is KNOWN for basketball...Cincy isn't really known.

Cincy is a good school doubt. No fault in a player going there but you are dead wrong about saying STJ is irrelevant. This program was buried in the 2000's but under Lavin is finally coming back. 2 years ago this team was one of the most publicized teams in the country knocking off many top teams, being a top 3 big east team and a nationally ranked team. The reason why STJ is a top school for national recruits is because we have one of the best staffs in the country. Steve Lavin has put many players in the NBA from his time a UCLA including Baron Davis, Earl Watson, Trevor Ariza, Ryan Hollins, Dan Gadzuric etc. In a short amount of time at STJ he has already helped put out DJ Kennedy who signed with the Cavs and Moe Harkless is projected as a top 20 pick. Add that to the fact his assistants are Mike Dunlap (former Nuggets assistant) Rico Hines (former Warriors assistant) and has Gene Keady as a special advisor then you will see why St Johns is pulling in top classes. These coaches put you to the next level

You want to talk last year? Fine. Cincy had a great year last year. Congratulations. Meanwhile, St. John's started five freshman for most of last year, had the Big East rookie of the year in Moe Harkless (who will be a first round NBA draft pick this year--where do you think Yancy Gates gets picked?), second team BE player D'Angelo Harrison, and had a top 10 recruiting class in 2011. Lavin is back on the sidelines this year and has put together a very strong 2012 class that has added much needed depth to a very talented nucleus of players. We play at MSG for half of our home games, and the NY media generates way more exposure than anything coming out of Cincinnati. Our coaching staff has a plethora of NBA experience and can get kids ready for the NBA as well as anyone in the country (see, e.g., Harkless). Recruits are looking at St. John's today (as opposed to the Mullin era) as Steve Lavin's program, and not many coaches in the country can sell the benefits of his program better than Lavin.

Why is SJU so great? Because a few bad hires don't erase 100+ years of history. SJU had a few bad hires and it took us out of the game. Lavin came along and is taking the program to the place it was and hopefully further. I don't think Cincinnatti is going to want to play us this year. Especially if Obekpa is here... ;)

I liken Lavin's UCLA days to Anakin Skywalker. Everybody thought the brash young kid was dead. Now ya gotta deal with Darth Vader... ;)

I don't think ANYONE will want to play us if we get Obekpa. If we somehow get Obekpa AND Chandler, dear god...start running now because the Johnnies are coming.

When those who root for other teams post on this board (or jungle), you can tell pretty quickly whether they are a reasonable, objective, and legitimate basketball fan, or simply looking to cause trouble. Cincy is no doubt an attractive option for recruits; but anyone who believes that the last time St. John's was relevant was the "early 90s", and doesn't recognize the impression this staff would have on a prospective recruit, is not worth engaging in a back-and-forth discussion. Only going to get some of you guys worked up.

Back to Obekpa - he seems to fit perfectly with how we want to play, and Lavin has a pretty good track record with big men. I'm thrilled just to be "in it" again, especially considering where this was a few weeks ago.
