Chris Obekpa

People can't forget the slick back hair it rubbed them the wrong way. We have a top coach with a great staff, and good young players. Haters are gonna hate I'd rather people hate us then love us. It means we are good!

The Cincy board posters are ridiculous. The SJU coaching staff would never do such a thing with any recruit. They are beating expectations by a mile and developing a great thing here. I'm sure coach Lavin is very satisfied with the recruiting effort at St. John's. He'd be a fool to risk his job by paying a recruit to play here.

He'd definitely be a fool to pay Obekpa given Obekpa's propensity to discuss such topics on Twitter in his native tongue. :manga:

Sirvoo
nice post = we are good - and getting "more good" with each passing year - not just building some short term spark but rejuvinating SJU!

We are very fortunate, as I have posted before, tyo havae Coach Lavin, his staff, the improved facilities, generous donors and the like.

all the best

Good one HarV.

For whatever reason, this kid seems to change his mind with the weather, and his latest lean toward St. John's may be, to paraphrase Ira Gershwin, just a passing fancy and in time may go. (That said, I am excited about what we're all hearing.)

for the uninitiated, such as me, is Ira - George's brother or something? And from whence the lyrics?

ALLNET :

: Ira was George's brother and it comes from the song," Our Love Is Here To Stay."

The title refers to the love the two brothers had for each other.

Realize I'm getting off topic here (this thread is about CO leaning toward us now), but to address your inquiry, George, who tragically died in his 30s from brain cancer, was quite the ladies man and was perhaps (along with Duke Ellington) America's greatest composer ("Porgy and Bess," "American in Paris," "Rhapsody in Blue"); Ira, who looked something like George Costanza and who lived well into his 80s, wrote the lyrics to songs like "Summertime" and many, many other classics, including, in this case, "Our Love Is Here to Stay," one of most recorded songs ever. For the record, the Gershwins weren't "corny"; their music has been recorded by virtually every great jazz artist who ever laid down tracks, from Coltrane to Ella Fitzgerald to Sinatra to Billie Holiday to Sarah Vaughn to Dexter Gordon, et al. Truly great stuff.

Well said. I am more of a 70's/80's rock fan but I love everything from Nina Simone to The Irish Tenors to Pantera. The Gershwin songs have been crooned by Bing and belted by Aretha and they are incredible in every case.

Back on track I can't wait to see the title of this thread to add that "committed" suffix to it. Come on CO make the right decision and help us rock the Garden and the rest of the BE.

Seems like a delicate situation with this kid but I'm sure Lavin and co. will be trying to get pen to paper in the coming days. Not to sound pessimistic but if it's the middle of next week and we don't have it locked up I'm sure a lot of people will start to wonder where we stand.

Does this mean Chandler may not qualify? If CO is on the fence now how will he feel if Chandler qualifies and now there's a bit of a logjam?

do those academic grants that many some athletes sign after the signing date have a limit? It seems from what i am reading we will jump on CO. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Lets get him and not have to wait around for Chandler. Could we still get both in an ideal world?

Nothing on the Cincy board, that place is like a ghostyard. The projo fans are once again accusing Lavin on playing dirty.

And Cooley got two top 20 kids to a basketball wasteland.
Those in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

Strange comment; kind of intimates the PC's and SJU's of the world can't get these kind of recruits W/O going below board - probably reading too much into it.

Yeah I think you were looking too much into it.
Providence has been a wasteland for awhile. We can do a 10 pg thread about what makes STJ more desirable landing spot for a recruit (staff, location, MSG, etc).
Their fans should be ecstatic with the 2 players they grabbed. And like Dinkins said yea they are 'backyard' players but still beat pretty stiff competition. So to complain they are losing kids to us might not be the smartest thing to do because someone can just as easily flip the switch on them.

Gotcha, MJ Dinkins was right on, I was reading out of my........

To the folks who are asking about Obekpa's "imminent" commitment having any bearing on Chandler joining the Johnnies.... It won't be an issue.

The staff's plan was to bring in two bigs.

Wait...: so we can possibly bring in obekpa and Chandler? Can we confirm that?

Confirmed! Remember Wood has not yet qualified. However, one has to be also concerned
that the Chandler situation is tentative at best IMO. Additionally, I still worry about Obekpa qualifying. All in all. It is a tricky process. Welcome to big time recruiting challenges. Let's trust staff, let this play out and enjoy a new era in SJU hoops.

Does anyone know with certainty whether JaKarr Sampson has qualified?

Thanks,
