Chris Obekpa

If you notice that column for cnnsi.com was actually a special by Rivals. And it is an abridged version of the same column Jerry Meyer wrote on Rivals.com. He mentions Sanchez much more prominently:

THE BIG EAST
Team to watch: Look out for Steve Lavin and his staff at St. John's. It has scholarships to burn and Lavin and his assistants were quite visible on the recruiting trail during the winter. Regardless of position, the Johnnies are on the hunt for talent and they've taken aim at guys such as soon to be four-star high school big man Christopher Obekpa and four-star junior college combo forward Orlando Sanchez. The Red Storm are also in the mix with local swingman Thaddeus Hall, who has developed quite a following thanks to a big senior season. Another possibility with talent is 2011 Rivals150 member Michael Chandler, who has heavy interest in St. John's but some qualification issues to overcome.

Best battle: There is actually a pair of battles among a trio of Big East teams that should be interesting to watch. Providence, St. John's and Cincinnati are all heavily involved for the previously mentioned Obekpa and Sanchez. Obekpa is a shot-blocking and rebounding force who protects the rim while Sanchez is a super athletic combo forward that is at his best in transition. Pittsburgh also has been involved with Sanchez of late while UConn, Rutgers and Seton Hall also are on the hunt for Obekpa.

Also noted interestingly in the Hartford Courant.
Coach-In-Waiting: The Pros ...

•Should UConn designate Ollie as Calhoun's inevitable successor, Calhoun could return to coach and retire whenever he feels it is time.

•Recruits, such as Chris Obekpa of Long Island, could be told who they will be playing for long term: Calhoun now, Ollie later. The specter of tournament eligibility for 2013 is already affecting recruiting, and the Huskies have put a lot of effort into Obekpa.

UCONN feels it is in the running for Obekpa?????"

The way I see this is that are far as the bigs are concerned there's Obekpa, Sanchez, Chandler, Nolan and possibly Upshaw. We need any two of these guys. Then we're targeting Hall, Morris and Bournagault. we need 0ne of these guys. Add any combination of two of those bigs and one shooter added to what we already have and we can have a top 20 team next year. If Mo by some sort of divine intervention changes his mind and decides to stay we can be top 10.

We have not been named with Upshaw.

Neither is Moe coming back.

To be fair Upshaw has not named anyone. People are speculating based on who were his finalists prior to choosing Kansas St.

Shortly after his decommitment from K-St his mother told Rivals.com that the only thing she would say with certainty is that Robert was not going to K-St nor was he following Martin to South Carolina. His recruitment would not start up again until he got back from France. I have no idea if SJU is involved or would be involved with him but it does appear at the moment that he is wide open at least:

"Robert is just taking time out to get ready for Paris," said Sherman. "When he gets back on the (April) 13th, he'll start to figure out what the next step is."

Upshaw's respite from the recruiting game isn't keeping coaches from trying to recruit him.

"Everybody is calling, but we aren't talking to anyone," said Sherman. "They are all just going to voice mail."

What is he doing in France? Is there a USA team playing over there? Just a coincidence our staff is over there?

I would assume that they would be there watching Upshaw then. I'm sure Lavin and Chiles are aware of the situation.

Big Euro tourney. staff is there to see a few guys

Gotcha. Some of these kids might be very impressed if they see lavs flex across the ocean to watch. Can't hurt

http://cincinnati.com/blogs/uc/2012/04/10/bearcats-expected-to-sign-one-wednesday/

The UC men’s basketball team is expected to sign junior college forward Titus Rubles today on the first day of the spring signing period. The 6-foot-8, 220-pound Rubles averaged 16 points and 10 rebounds last season and has two years of eligibility remaining.

UC is still waiting for a decision from 6-foot-9 center and shot-blocking specialist Chris Obekpa from Centereach, N.Y. Obekpa, who visited UC the weekend of Feb. 23, is not expected to make a decision until later this month or early in May. He is also being recruited by DePaul, St. John’s and Oregon, among others

...from Jon Rothstein's column linked below:

"We’re hearing that Cincinnati has emerged as the favorite for Our Savior New American big man Chris Obekpa. The 6-foot-9 shot blocking machine is also considering St. John’s and Oregon. Many scouts have compared Obekpa to NBA star Tyrus Thomas. The 2012 center would likely start immediately for the Bearcats next season in place of the graduated Yancy Gates."

Per kranmars...SJU gets a number of high level recruits, SJU loses out on a number of high level recruits, and redmen.com posters overreact and make heads explode.

Tyrus Thomas is NOT a star, but a decent player to be compared to.

Good point, though he was pretty much a star in college which is where it will matter for CO and STJ if he comes.
