Chris Obekpa

First opportunity  to see Obekpa must admit was a little disappointed.

Guards usually dominate these kind of games

Obekpa is a big that can block shots, rebound and get up and down the court. He is somewhat of a project like Louisville's Giorgi Dieng. Look at how much he progressed from Freshman to Sophomore seasons.

Complete and fair assessment of Obekpa's game.. Good comparison as well.. Only knock on it is that Deng is taller .. I don't think Chris is a true 6'9 as he is listed.

Think we need to manage expectations.

I mentioned Coach K's second and third years at Duke in an earlier post. After a somewhat successful first season (17-10, NIT quarterfinals) with inherited seniors Gene Banks and Kenny Dennard, coach K went 10-17 and 11-17 before finishing 24-10 and making the NCAA tournament in his fourth season at the helm.

From day one coach Lav said that the rebuilding process was going to take time. There could be more growing pains this upcoming season.

Hopefully Moe will get drafted really high and do well which will help Lav sell St John's as a landing place for the elite, top 10 level high school recruits.

I'm drawing comparisons to Duke because that's the benchmark of what I'm hoping Lav is building here.

He is listed as 6"11 yes

That seemed like a random reply to the conversation.

Lav said what he said because he's smart and he knew he ran the chance of some of the guys leaving early. Moe, or Karr, or Pelle if they made it year 1. So his talk of '13 makes sense. I agree on managing expectations. That's why I posted individual expectations for Obekpa last week and compared him to Dieng. Dieng 'only' put up 5, 4 and 2 as a freshman but its clear he impacts games. I think that is well within Chris' abilities.

Dumb question, but could someone put a phonetic spelling of Chris' name here so I (we) can know how his name is pronounced?

Whoa - Deja Vu from a decade-plus ago! I used similar arguments during Lav's early UCLA years - trying to show that even the most elite coaching minds take time to put it all together (of course, I threw in it took John Wooden 13 years to win NOT his first NCAA championship, but his first NCAA first round game!), Fell on deaf ears. But what do you expect? 6 years later, when it turned out that the current LEGEND Coach K and Steve Lavin were the ONLY two coaches in D-1 during those 6 years to get to 5 Sweet 16s or better, the ONLY two coaches who's teams had finished in the top 25 ALL SIX SEASONS, UCLA fans still claimed Lav's was incompetent, and had destroyed the program - and amazingly, the AD had sold him down the river by offering the job to Rick Pitino in a secret phone call that got "outed" almost immediately in January 2001- as Steve was driving for his 4th Sweet 16, and would follow with a FIFTH in 2002 - even tho completely hamstrung by that revelation. Even a recruiter like Lav's has to have issues when the recruits know his boss is trying to replace him. How he convinced Ryan Hollins, Mike Fey and Trevor Ariza to come to UCLA AFTER that, I'll never know...

Good post Mr. Green! Spend more time here and not on the Jungle!

On the interior, the East featured an impressive rotation of Nerlens Noel, Mitch McGary, Kaleb Tarczewski, Dajuan Coleman and Christopher Obekpa. None of the big guys really ever got established with paint touches but the quick rising Obekpa did impress with his shot blocking and willingness to chase after everything.
