Charleston Classic

Also, if you haven't setup a meeting spot already, I'd suggest the Kicken' Chicken right down the street from TD arena at 337 King Street.

That's where you and your friends will be waiting with bats and chains? :p

Thats only how fans from new york greet visitors rawdog. I'm sure they'll have some sweet tea waiting for you.

It's rather ironic, as I was thinking who would represent the Big East next season in Charleston, while watching the VCU/Seton Hall game.

God-willing, I will be there (I live nearly a couple of hours from Charleston). Hopefully, some of you make reservations to be there, as well.

This guy from rumble AKA PICO PIcks us to lose by a bucket

Well, he likes us to cover, lines 4. Anybody know about Charleston? Should we be a 4 pt. dog?

Yeah, they don't have a lot of size. Only thing they have going for them is they return 6 of their top 7 and a Jr. transfer. Wocjik (sp?) is suposed to be a good coach so they'll come to play but they shot far better from 3 in their first game than they did last season.

CofC fan here. The team isn't full of giants by any means, but they aren't exactly small either. The starters at the F/C positions are: Baru 6-9 225, Wiedeman 6-8 255, and Thomas 6-7 207. The guys behind them getting significant minutes are 6-6 or 6-5 F/G, but I don't see any significant size advantage.

You can find a good preview at http://www.kingkresse.com/
CofC message boards are at http://CofCfans.com

I was more speaking to a lack of size disadvantage in the frontcourt for the Johnnies but you are correct. Eventually STJ smaller than average front line will be faced with the challenge of that situation. Lots of atheletes up front so it will interesting to see how they fare when it happens but it won't be today.

I think we will be fine vs. Charleston. This is another team we should beat. I don't see how we are the underdog at all unless they (like anyone else) have an uncanny day behind the arc shooting 50% or something. You have to remember that these mid majors are not used to playing against teams with our athleticism and talent. They are not Detroit they have no Wooden Watch player headed to the NBA. If Sampson can get rid of his jitters, and we get more of the same from last game from the likes of Greene, D'Lo, Jones, etc. we will win by 10-15.

We are on the road and a 4 point dog, and you think STJ will win by 15?

We just beat Detroit and this team is way less talented. Not saying they are a pushover... I think it's a 5 point game at halftime, but we turn on the jets in the 2nd half and ultimately win by 10+. That's if Sampson becomes any kind of factor offensively, Jones contributes some points and nice assists/rebounds, Obekpa plays like Obekpa, Greene keeps his stroke, and D'Lo plays like D'Lo. Charleston does not scare me nearly as much as Detroit did.

I'm a little nervous too... I would love for us to get off to a quick start. Our guards cant be so quick to help and give up open kickbacks for 3's. definitely love to see us make it a track meet.
Pumped up to be here on vacation. The walk from my hotel (off of Pinckney St) is a quick one. Got in town Wednesday, place has been awesome thus far. Anyone staying need recommendations to any bars/rests let me know!

Baylor in a fight right now with Boston College. 1 pt game with a minute to go in the first half.

Pierre Jackson looks like one of the best PGs in the nation. 17 points in the half.
Ryan Anderson of BC is legit.

Ricardo Gathers looks decent. Good on the boards. Had a steal for a breakaway dunk. But he has no real post game and just does a lot of the dirty work. From the little I've seen of him, Christian Jones is the better prospect right now. More well rounded.

EDIT: Anderson just hit a halfcourt jumper at the buzzer to give BC a 43-41 lead at the half. Incredible player.

We won our first game over a midmajor by 3, at home. Similar midmajor on the road this time ? I think that's as good an explanation as any why we could be the underdog.

It'll be close, could go either way in my eyes. Obviously I hope I'm wrong and we win by 20 though.

We are very quick to help, and I don't know why. I've been noticing that too though. And a few of our guys (Dom and Amir especially) are supposed to be lock down defenders.

Maybe it's a learning curve.

I don't see how you can compare Detroit to Charleston. There is no player on that team close to McCallum. You say "we beat a mid major by 3" referring to Detroit, implying that all mid majors are the same. Not the case. Charleston is a team we should handle. Remember we got basically zero offensive production from Sampson and we beat a tourney team with an NBA draft pick running the show. IMO if Sampson just gets in his groove, this game is ours fairly easily.

Lawrence on College of Charleston will suprise you. Real good player who competed in the Olympics

By the way just to clarify, I'm not saying this will be an easy win, I just think it's a game we should flat out win. Charleston does not seem as dangerous as Detroit.

2012 RPI Rankings
Charleston 124
Detroit 130
St Johns 155

Not having a McCallum doesn't mean they're much worse than Detroit. They beat Clemson and Tennessee last year, and played Louisville a lot closer than we did... @ Louisville. They are predicted to finish 2nd in their conference behind Davidson. Which makes them a bubble team probably. They're a different team, but pretty comparable to Detroit.

Again, i'm not giving you my Lou Holtz impression, trying to make Navy out to be the '71 cornhuskers.
Charleston isn't great, but they are comparable to Detroit.

I hope the team is taking Charleston a lot more serious than you are Joe.

Every mid major has a classic upset or 2. I wonder how often that actually happens for them. Probably extremely rare. We almost beat Duke last year. What's your point? Just beating a good team last year means nothing. There is nothing about them that should overwhelm us unless they have a historic day from 3. Is this a game we may lose? Sure...but we should be able to handle the 2nd best team in the SoCo. You really underestimate the difference between SoCo and the Big East. They don't play teams as talented as ours often at all. This is the kind of game their fans may storm the court for if they win. For us, it's a game we should win and move on.

You telling us a guy we never heard of is better then the guy we cried about losing!! Thats a great thing, go figure. Gotta give kudos to coach Steve. Coach Calhoun brought in a 6-9 kid who really ran the floor and banged a few years back. I forgot his name, but I don't think he was a top 100 recruit but became all BE and was drafted. Now I remember, Josh Boone. Not a big time recruit, right.

You're right, College of Charleston should just forget about it, pack it up and go home.

Oh wait...
