Charleston Classic

I hope Lavin keeps the team focused on the task at hand- Murray State.

You know he wants to win this tourney badly. Coming back from Cancer and winning this tourney just puts us on another level.

Gotta stay focused on today though.

Hey guys i'm new to the board in the sense of actually posting something, but i've been trolling these boards since the end of the mike jarvis era when you couldnt even register for some odd reason. haha Been a johnnies fan since the felipe lopez era, mainly because he is my second cousin and used to go to most of the games when i was younger. I love what Christian Jones brings to the team!! No he is not at the same level as Poythress but there is no question that he brings the same level of impact that gathers would have brought to this team. Yes gathers would have helped us out significantly more on the boards but CJ is a better passer and scorer than gathers. Gathers is a back to the basket player but in watching both games of the charleston classic, to say he is on another level than cj in any anything other than rebounding is farfetched.

charleston is such as nice place. i wish i was down there. enjoy

What are good places to go? And FYI I'm not a southern food fan. (Message to Maher and others lets not turn this into Food Thread) ;)

Welcome to the board

Colorado just beat Baylor!

Gathers scored 2 points.

He looks lost. Winded which shocks me because the previous times I've seen him he was a physical freak. Winded and not interested in the two games I've seen here.

*This is not sour grapes at all. Just honest observation.

Some others.

- Pierre Jackson is awesome but he's a diva. His act got out of hand a bit today with the theatrics.
- Duece Bello is much improved over raw HR sr year and last year. Him and Dom are identical in many ways.
- Gary Franklin transferred from Cali to Baylor and barely plays.
- Isaiah Austin is the goods.
- Colorado is really well coached team
- They can't hit FT's though. Joe3 would have conniption watching them.
- Xavier Johnson is really good freshman.

only drawback to the entire city moose, but the women more than make up for the food.

That is true.
One funny moment was seeing like 5 people last night lugging around 12/18 packs of beer. One guy on a bike doing it. No joke he rode his bike into a parked truck. Kind of made my night even better seeing that ;)

Agree with marrilac's analogy of Jones.
Nice complimentary player who reminds me of a prototypical Seton Hall recruit.
Sanchez will eat all of his minutes and that's good for team.
Before you laugh, does D'Lo remind anyone of El Amin?
His game, not his build.

I think both Marillac and you are selling him way short. He is better than a complimentary player (Seton Hall would kill for someone with his skillset). He's been one of our better players two games into his freshman season and should improve as the season wears on. I have not seen enough of Gathers and it's too early anyway, but never heard that he had any type of jump shot. Clearly Christian can shoot and doesn't try to do too much. Time will tell.

Jnaw, let's not kid ourselves...he hasn't been a MAJOR factor yet, just a solid glue guy. The only major factors right now are Obekpa, D'Lo, Greene, Garrett, and if you want to say Sampson for his defense only. Jones hasn't had the break out game many people on here seem to think he had already.

He's averaging 8 ppg on 46% shooting with a number of long jump shots. Break out or not, that's productive for a freshman. I do think he'll get better and have a breakout game. But let's not knock him for what he's done. He's been good.

He's been solid, but I'd like to see a 14 point 10 rebound game or something to warrant the hype. Yes he knocks down some tough jumpers, but he only gets a few buckets a game.

Fair, but he's only taking a few shots per game. As he becomes more aggressive on offense, I think you'll get the break out game. The point is, we've seen his skill at shooting the ball and we know he has the leaping ability to take it to the hole. The skillset is there, which is the hard part. The aggressiveness and confidence will come.

Joe3, I'd like to see what you think every player should average for us them to be successful. Because the way you make it sound, is that every player needs to have record breaking games "in order to live up to the hype" or to be successful.

I think he has played solid! haven't seen him force the issue, cj has shown great poise and has let the game come to him. Yea i wold like to see him grab 7 boards a game but i have no complaints about the way he has played except the one rebound he grabbed against detroit.

Yeah but you said he's been one of the better players on the team. Well Greene, Harrison and Garrett have been better. Then you have the three bigs, Jones has shown a better shot and passing but Sampson and Obekpa have been better rebounders and defenders. Even if you call those three a draw (though I really want rebounds from my bigs) the only two he's been better than are Dom and Felix.

He's been good and he's been a surprise, showing better shooting and passing skills that anyone should have anticipated, but your original statement is a bit of hyperbole. Let's just say that everyone is glad he's here and is excited to watch him grow over his 4 years. There's a ton of potential.

Given Jones was an unranked kid that we picked up right before the start of the season, he's a stud. As it stands, he appears to have relegated Dom to the bench, and has made GG's absence this season a non-factor. I'd say that's pretty darn good.

Averaging 135 ppg would go a long way toward helping us win a national championship.
