Charleston Classic

Get the feeling Greene and D'LO are gonna be exhausted come Sunday.
Can't wait for Branch.

Agree. Need to use Balamou a bit to spell Greene and D'Lo. He's not bad and very athletic. Potentially 4 games in one week is tough, butit is good for our team's progression both physically and mentally. Basketball immersion. They can rest next week.

Baylor in a fight right now with Boston College. 1 pt game with a minute to go in the first half.

Pierre Jackson looks like one of the best PGs in the nation. 17 points in the half.
Ryan Anderson of BC is legit.

Ricardo Gathers looks decent. Good on the boards. Had a steal for a breakaway dunk. But he has no real post game and just does a lot of the dirty work. From the little I've seen of him, Christian Jones is the better prospect right now. More well rounded.

EDIT: Anderson just hit a halfcourt jumper at the buzzer to give BC a 43-41 lead at the half. Incredible player.
You telling us a guy we never heard of is better then the guy we cried about losing!! Thats a great thing, go figure. Gotta give kudos to coach Steve. Coach Calhoun brought in a 6-9 kid who really ran the floor and banged a few years back. I forgot his name, but I don't think he was a top 100 recruit but became all BE and was drafted. Now I remember, Josh Boone. Not a big time recruit, right.

He was not a MCAA but he was a very good recruit out of high school.

To be fair, this is the first extended action I've seen from Gathers. I always felt if he stayed here, he would've just been a complimentary player, not a huge factor in Wins and Losses. I also felt because of his height, he would get killed in the Big East.

But yes, I think Jones is just as good, if not better than Gathers right now. Jones has a midrange game. That pretty much separates the 2 as I believe both of them are capable of scrapping for boards. At Gathers' height, he'll need to expand his game. Any offensive boards he gets, he'll probably just get blocked trying to go back up with it.

Gathers was a Top 40 recruit. If you put Jones on Baylor, I think there's no drop off and he possibly makes them better.

Can we stop with the Christian Jones love fest? He does some things very nicely, but we need to stop comparing him to elite players. He's not Poythress, he's no Gathers. He's a kid that can give us 10-15 quality mpg as a frosh--and that is great. I think we are going to see his role reduced in the coming weeks.

Sampson and Obekpa have superior quickness and it shows. Sampson is also superior on the boards. When we switch to the matchup it's crazy how apparent it is that Sampson and Obekpa cover so much more ground. Jones may be a fast kid up and down the court, but he's not quick at all. He looks like he's wearing ankle weights. He blocks out very well for a frosh, but he doesn't go get the ball well after he does that. He's played two games--47 minutes--without an offensive rebound. Sampson on the other hand angles his way to every ever offensive rebound he can, and while he doesn't box out as well as Jones, he attacks the ball after he pins his man.

On a more positive note...although the guys were sloppy, the overall quickness in the matchup zone was impressive and clearly a step up from last year. Sampson was out of control a lot, but he showed his promise all around tonight. The trio of Harrison-Green-Garrett look excellent early on and we need every ounce of that.

A four-star recruit is elite? I compared them in the context of their games.

Gathers is on a more talented squad. He has incredible strength and is a good on-ball defender. But he is raw on the offensive side of the ball and cannot score outside of the paint.

Jones looks to you like he has ankle weights on when running but yet he can jump out of the gym. How does that work?

Seems to me like you don't want to give this kid credit either because he was unranked or because he doesn't possess the rebounding attributes of a four year player.

Standing verticals and agility are 2 different things. He does seem a bit sluggish at times. Hope that changes.

Yes, Jones looks like he is severely lacking in the quickness area to me. Maybe it's anticpation, maybe it's footspeed, maybe it's a combination. He's a big dude, getting started might take him a few steps...once he gets going he's pretty damn fast. Want other examples...watch football this weekend. TE's and LB's don't usually possess the quickness of WR's and Safeties, but a lot of them can keep it prettty close and even beat them in a 40 once they get going.

I have nothing against the kid. I hope he could score 20 and grab 10 boards because I love STJ basketball and I don't care if Sam Sealy is our best player as long as we win. It's a "back to reality" stance perhaps. Let's be realistic with the kid.

I agree that some people are getting carried away with how they talk about Jones.
But one thing I think that hasn't been mentioned enough is he looks to be a viable midrange jumpshooter.
If Phil and D'angelo can trust him on a pick and pop... that will make our team immensely more dangerous.
Right now teams trap our guards on every ball screen because stopping D'lo from driving to the hole is far more important than leaving Sampson or Obekpa open 19 feet from the basket.

If Jones can play the role Brownlee played for Hardy a few years ago, that would be fantastic.
If Sanchez became eligible and could do the same... well then we'd be in business.

Marillac, I always have respected your comments - but I disagree on Jones. Sampson is lost on offense right now. Jones mid range game, or at least his confidence in it, is a good sign for a freshman and for what our team needs. He is much more polished coming off picks and receiving the ball with an idea of what to do with it...
Obviously Jakarr has superior athleticism - but his game is gonna take a little time to contribute into our offense from a half court setting. Some of Sampson's takes to the basket have not been pretty....just saying. I for one like Jones and come away impressed

I don't think he lacks quickness. I think he's just hesitating and doesn't know how to change gears just yet. He doesn't necessarily have to, but his athleticism is underrated. I think he has done a great job thus far, and I don't think it is a stretch to give him credit vs guys like a gathers who I also think is similar in a lot of ways and also raw. If jones steps it up on the glass, he will elevate his game a ton. Right now he's feeling things out. He looks great for a young PF IMO.

Agree with marrilac's analogy of Jones.
Nice complimentary player who reminds me of a prototypical Seton Hall recruit.
Sanchez will eat all of his minutes and that's good for team.
Before you laugh, does D'Lo remind anyone of El Amin?
His game, not his build.

fair analogy

I think we will be fine vs. Charleston. This is another team we should beat. I don't see how we are the underdog at all unless they (like anyone else) have an uncanny day behind the arc shooting 50% or something. You have to remember that these mid majors are not used to playing against teams with our athleticism and talent. They are not Detroit they have no Wooden Watch player headed to the NBA. If Sampson can get rid of his jitters, and we get more of the same from last game from the likes of Greene, D'Lo, Jones, etc. we will win by 10-15.

We are on the road and a 4 point dog, and you think STJ will win by 15?

Good call Joe.

Anyone down in Charleston hava a report to give us? I'd be Interested to hear how the hotels, restaurants, etc. are down there and how they are are treating the "Yanks".

Sure thing. Everyone has been really nice. :) I hit up some great restaurants (husk, Macintosh, gin joint) some great bars (cocktail club, Belmont, squeeze). King St. Shopping is as good as advertised and have the best retro sports shop I've ever seen - The Vault - where I bought a cool johnnies tee.
Walked from hotel to arena, 6 minutes or so, and sat behind our bench. Seeing Lav in action was cool - very positive, nourishing style... I was pretty vocal and received no slack from anyone in c of c garb. All in good fun.
Charleston is pretty neat town and definitely enjoying my time away from ct. Have to hit up FIG to eat then over to the Johnnies game for 2nd half.
(My wife was a trooper going to the c of c game, to hit up another is a tough ask. So I figured 2nd half would be a compromise)

Not sure about El Amin, but I love the way he plays the game. He is by far our most important player. Just hope he can keep his cool all season, he is so fun to watch.

Thanks Keith. Sounds like you guys are having a good time down there...lets hope it gets better tonight!.

Color me surprised. So either a big win tonight and a chance at the title or a loss tonight and a chance to play Rico. LOL
