(Charleston Classic) Dayton, Fri., Nov. 17, 2p, ESPN2

The season so far can only be viewed as a disappointment. We got beat up in our MSG debut. We struggled to beat North Texas and we lost the game we needed to win in this tournament. Houston or Utah looks like a very difficult challenge. Other then Soriano nobody else is playing to the level we need. Maybe Dingle gets better, maybe Luis helps. Maybe Witcher gets some experience and this is his team next year. I don't see where Jenkins and particularly Ledlum is going to get us. There are some pieces but Pitino has his handful.
It's only a disappointment if you fall for the hype and the hyperbole. CP doesn't play. He cannot walk on water. He is a brilliant coach in an extremely competitive market place. This rebuild will take time.

Jenkins needs to sit out all 40 minutes the next game we have against a cupcake so everyone else gets a chance to figure it out.

The thing I am most surprised about so far this year is I don't think Rick has any idea what he has with this team yet. I feel like what he expected from them preseason and what he is seeing in the games are two completely different things and he has not adjusted yet

That's a great point, which makes me question why we even participated in a tournament like this where the teams we are facing are clearly way ahead of us.

We have a major coach.

But;

We don't have a major point guard. (Jenkins is not a major point guard)
We don't have a major shooter. (Dingle is not a major shooter)
We don't have physical strength. (lost all 4 games in second half)

Pitino needs to recruit major players who have physical strength just like back when he was in Kentucky and Louisville.

My prediction is this "Bridge is Falling" thread is going to provide some look back laughs in a month.

I'm really surprised by how many thought with 12 new additions and missing their 2nd and maybe most talented player (who dropped 21 and 9 against this same Dayton team last year) this was going to a well oiled cohesive unit on November 17th.

You play these tough games early on because playing teams like St. Peters and Wagner don't make you better.

Did not see the game so regarding the last 3-4 pages of this thread; disappointed we lost but it is nonsense to think the season is down the tubes. Pitino is not a 5 star recruiter, then roll the balls out coach, he is a developer and molder of teams. The journey has barely started, just barely started, both this year and the Pitino era.

This season is nowhere close to being down the tubes. The results are disappointing, but we've actually lost to some good teams. I personally always expected the team to be peaking later in the year. Just keep in mind also, this is easily going to be worst roster that Pitino has here, and we all knew this going in.

Defense was just terrible. Could be wrong but it felt like majority of Daytons baskets were within 5 feet of the hoop. Frustrating watching guys constantly get beat off the dribble. Ledlum and Dingle are a little slow defensively. Also feels like certain guys should be shooting less. Ledlum needs to shoot less. Nightmare every time he puts the ball on the floor and tries to drive to the hoop. Feels similar to when Mathis touched the ball last year. Alleyne needs to play more. Dingle needs to get more shot opportunities. Dingle and Soriano should be getting the most shots. PG needs to make sure scorers get the ball. Hopefully Luis is a much better defender and more efficient offensive player than what’s out there right now. Some of the guys aren’t quick enough defensively and the freshmen seem to need to hit the gym and get stronger. Hopefully they gel and start to play better. Team is a work in progress. Won’t really know what we have until Luis comes back and everyone settles into their roles.

I'll also just say. Half the guys who played for Dayton are also newcomers for their squad. Cheeks (Robert Morris), Bennett (Merrimack), Jack (Buffalo), Santos (Pittsburgh) are all transfers, while Padegimas is a freshman.
