(Charleston Classic) Dayton, Fri., Nov. 17, 2p, ESPN2

I’ve said enough but Pitino has to figure a rotation out before BE play starts. Guys like Alleyne, Wilcher, Dunlop have to get more time and guys like Jenkins and Ledlum have to have to sit on the bench sometimes. Ledlum really has to ask himself some serious questions. I am shocked at how out of his element he looks and that Pitino just doesn’t sit him.

We’re not used to playing a hard OOC schedule. This should be helpful down the road (I hope).

I don’t feel confident about sundays game, either way. Hopefully we’re a different team in a month

The thing I am most surprised about so far this year is I don't think Rick has any idea what he has with this team yet. I feel like what he expected from them preseason and what he is seeing in the games are two completely different things and he has not adjusted yet
You saw on his face during the Michigan game he realized what this actually was. Jenkins and Ledlum aren’t Big East starters. Dingle is not his type of guy.

He’ll adjust next year, but this year will all be about culture and foundation from here on out. Win a game in the NIT if we are lucky.

The season so far can only be viewed as a disappointment. We got beat up in our MSG debut. We struggled to beat North Texas and we lost the game we needed to win in this tournament. Houston or Utah looks like a very difficult challenge. Other then Soriano nobody else is playing to the level we need. Maybe Dingle gets better, maybe Luis helps. Maybe Witcher gets some experience and this is his team next year. I don't see where Jenkins and particularly Ledlum is going to get us. There are some pieces but Pitino has his handful.

Agree, it is way too early to predict calamity for the year.
I will express surprise that several transfers described as experienced and/or good shooters
either have poor outside shooting percentages or received minimal playing time.
I suppose Rick is searching for effective combinations.

Embarrassing. Dayton can get a Merrimack transfer to play well as a sophomore and all our transfers look like freshmen.

How many times was Pitino going to let Holmes beat Soriano before he adjusted?

Not only is Jenkins a black hole boy he can’t defend his position?
Isolating Joel outside so many times was painful & w no adjustment

The portal ain’t all that it’s cooked up to be! I’m convinced Ledlum was planted here to play against us. His cover is that he dives for loose balls, but oh boy just wait till he floats a running layup OVER THE BACKBOARD. JFC we need help boys!

Tough loss but I was impressed by the Dayton team. They're quick, well coached, had poise and had plenty of physicality. They're going to be a good team this year.

Overall thoughts through these two games.
  • We played much better tonight than last night IMO. Offense was much better. We just started to run out of options as Dayton turned up the heat. I was really frustrated watching Holmes dribble the ball up with 0 pressure. Absolutely should have been double teaming him or switching Taylor on to him when that happened. Think we made him look much better than he is tonight.
  • Refs were a major issue in the second half. Very Dayton focused calls. Ticky tack fouls being called on us. Frustrating.
  • Joel - I have a hard time thinking of a Johnnie that's been as consistently good as Joel has these last two seasons. True joy to have on the team. That said, I don't like him handling the ball at the top key beyond the arc. He threw a couple away today. Would rather keep him inside the key, though he seems to have confidence in the straight on 3 and that's a very nice addition to his game. Also, he's gotta stay on his feet if he's defending on the perimeter. Holmes had 3 drives tonight with a simple pump fake and drive that got Joel to leave his feet.
  • Dingle - Very confusing. Seems to be very out of sorts on his shot and totally lacking confidence. Not even shooting well from the line. I figured he'd be more aggressive about being our go-to offensive option in the backcourt. Hoping he's just figuring things out. Wanna see much more aggression from him and we do need to run some plays for him to get an open look.
  • Taylor - I like Taylors game. I think his decision making is generally good and he's overall consistent. Nice addition.
  • Ledlum - So far, hasn't lived up to the hype. Missing way too many shots within 5 ft of the rim. Curious what his +/- is. I don't see it being very good right now. Needs to stop being asked to create or drive from the perimeter. Always leads to a bad shot or turnover.
  • Jenkins - While he can be out of control at times, I appreciate that he's at least trying to be the go to guy when we need a three, but I think he's being asked to do a bit too much right now. His offensive orchestration seems to be just ok. But I like the energy and effort. Full motor all game. Somebody else needs to be a 3-ball threat and its going to open his game up more (ahem Dingle).
  • I wanna see Zuby and Wilcher get more playing time. Wilcher to me is our biggest threat with the ball in his hands. His drives are aggressive and seems to have a nice touch around the rim and can shoot. Also effective dribble, drive and kick. Draws attention when the balls in his hands. Typical freshman errors and control issues, but with more minutes I'm really excited to watch him grow. Zuby has a good touch around the basket and physical. Will be a match up problem. Him and Soriano together theoretically should be a very tough front court to match up with.
  • Why isn't Alleyne getting more time?
From what I'm seeing, we're definitely a lower half of the big east team right now. Hoping time and practice brings the team together.

Pitino did say on several occasions that this team can't play defense.

I think by the start of conference play our starters might be Wilcher, Jenkins, Taylor, Luis and Soriano.

Perhaps. For it to be more than that, Wilcher will need to develop faster than maybe he is capable
