...Can we make the Tournament?

Jeff Borzello;

NCAA announces how it will handle scenarios related to withdrawals in the NCAA tournament.
- No reseedings or bracket changes once it's released
- No replacement teams after the tournament begins
- Replacement teams introduced within 48 hours of the field, no time thereafter

There can be forfeits, per the NCAA: "Once the tournament has begun, no team will replace a team that has a COVID-19 issue and can no longer participate in the championship. Its opponent would advance to the next round via the no-contest rule."

The NIT was the favored tourney until the beginning of the 60's . Then the NCAA took over when Cincinnati and Ohio State began to win that Tourney . The NIT still would get a good field since a lot of the League's second and third place finishers would not get a NCAA bid like they do today . Including our own BE where we get 5,6,7 bids a year .  It was a very exciting Tournament back in the Day because it was played in NY at MSG and got a good level of publicity . And , in addition to St John's there might be a Manhattan , Fordham or NYU in the tourney too . Obviously those days are long gone .  Anytime there is a post season College Tournament it's a worthwhile watch . The fact of the NCAA owning the NIT now , means it gets good TV coverage .

My memory is that Coach Lapchick once turned down the NCAA to participate in the NIT, maybe 1962 when we lost to Dayton in the finals.

I'd like to see the BB schedule tweaked in years to come so the NIT could be reconfigured and used as a play-in tourney for the NCAA for the teams that were close to making it.

How would that work?  Would you delay the NCAA tournament two weeks while the NIT is played?  The NCAA  currently allows 68 teams to dance and conference tourney winners are given automatic bids in most leagues.  While it would certainly make the NIT more exciting, the  last thing we need is another  play-in tournament.  If you can't get an at large birth to a 68 team field then you don't deserve to dance.

BrookJersey you are correct. Al did not like where the NCAA was going to place his team and he chose the Nit.

I'd say expand the NCAA to 96 with byes and kill the NIT. I would want to see every mid-major with 20 wins in rather than high major midpack garbage, though. Regular season champs should get an automatic bid. Let the conference tournaments be for seeding and upsets.

The fringe NCAA teams should play-in via NIT. Start the season one week earlier, and the NCAA tournament 1 week later.

Lunardi's latest bracket has 5 BE teams in: Nova a 2 seed, Creighton a 4, Hall an 11 seed and Xavier (12) & UCONN (11) both in the play in games as 2 of final 4 in. Interesting, as it's most BE teams I have seen in his bracket in a while.

US Guard , a very valid question you posed . Losing 3 out of 4 and to 2 of the weakest teams in the BE would make the answer No !  We had fate in our hands and succumbed to it . PC and Seton Hall are not certain Wins , no matter how it's spun ., We can easily finish 8-11 as well as 10-9 .  What hurts the most is the bad trending , finishing  the season poorly . But , there is still hope for a good year by winning these last 2 .

Wins against Villanova, Xavier and UConn show there is something there. The loss @Butler killed all momentum we cached and of course at home to DePaul was a dagger. Clearly we have shown we can beat or lose to anyone in the conference.
Not a ringing endorsement and hopefully the team as a whole has not hit a wall.

Are there 68 teams better than St. John's?

That's not the question because of automatic qualifiers from lesser conferences.

Sadly the answer is No.

Losses at Butler and at home against DePaul sealed it. A non-competitive blowout loss at Villanova just confirmed it. No excuses.

The only path left is winning the Big East Tournament which is unlikely.

maybe.

some games I think so.  Some games not.

Really no reason to discuss our Tournament chances. They are dead barring a BET championship or maybe winning 4 in a row.

Current bracketology on Bracket Matrix has 16 teams RV but not in the field. Those will likely be teams ahead of us in the 16 team NIT. Need to win a couple more to make the NIT. That's really where the discussion should be in terms of at-large. The BET auto-bid is of course there as always.

FYI: The NIT will feature 16 teams, with all games played in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.
