Cam Mack Asks for SJU Release
Even if one were to subscribe to the theory that an assistant who's job is just to recruit is supposed to have a great relationship with a kid you have to wonder how is the head coach not building the same type of relationship after he commits when you are going to be coaching the kid
Not to mention the fact that the asst coach partially had one foot out the door. Even more of a reason for the HC or for someone on the staff to cultivate a relationship with every kid we recruit, and most certainly every kid that commits. Know this came at a horrible time, and not about to bash the kid, but I for one am not loosing sleep over this.

Think he's playing for University of Phoenix Online or something

Why the staff didn´t show interest (and offer) Seton Hall local signee DaShawn Davis?.
At least, he could be a good PG bench.
Now we don´t have any PG.

Did you have a problem when Darien Williams de-committed from Iowa St in 2015 and followed Matt to SJU.

I could care less about Matt but whatever consequence is of Matt leaving falls in the lap of Chris Mullin. He doesn't work for SJU anymore and owes nothing to SJU.
Different scenario... sort of. When he de-committed from Iowa St tthe HC was negotiating to take the Bulls job, which he did a month of so later once the NBA season wound down.

I wouldn't want to force a kid to play here, so if he wants out...sure thing. But if Mullin stays, the release should bar him from following Matt to Nebraska, unless Nebraska wants to reimburse St Johns for Matt's salary last year. Either he was working for us or for them....

If Mullin goes, then every kid that wants a clean release should be given one.

Truth be told I didn’t think about it at the time. If Mullin steps aside have no issue except for thinking Matt’s ILU SJU schtick is weak. If Mullin doesn’t I absolutely have a problem with it.

“This was a very, very hard decision,” Mack said. “I honestly don’t know where I want to go. I’m going to start the process again. I would still consider going back there. I want to make sure I know what’s going on first.”
Sometimes I read the posts on this site and just shake my head. Do you all realize that during the past two weeks there are over 64 pages of posts regarding Coaching Alternatives? I have read on here that Mack's mother also visits Redmen.com so it would not be a stretch to say that all of the negative posts regarding Chris and his staff may have been instrumental in her and her son reconsidering their commitment to St. Johns. Also, they may not appreciate someone posting, good riddance and he can take his Mom with him.

Another thing that I am curious about is where did people find out that Chris did not reach out to Mack or his Mom after Matt left. I don't know and I don't believe that Chris checks in with the posters on Redmen.com before he contacts recruits. There are other posters who are blaming Matt. To my knowledge, Matt left because he felt it was a better opportunity for his career. Now, I may be crazy, but isn't this what most people do at various points in their professional lives.

My favorite Philosophy course at St Johns was "Logic", it seems as if some on here may not have taken it. LOL

Nice to see some sensible posters making their thoughts known on the board this morning. Thank you panther for the insight

A question for the lawyers on here: Any limits on Matt bringing Mack to Nebraska, kind of like the product of work while in the employ of SJU?

Panther, I agree that nobody should be critiquing kids to that extent. As far as fan message boards go, this board is actually better than most. Most message boards of actually successful teams are brutal and much worse than this one. The other boards have fans that also expect to win. At SJU we can never get a chance to expect to win. I think blaming the fans is preposterous.

It shouldn’t be a question whether or not Mullin called Cam or not. He’s the head coach and should be schmoozing every recruit that commits here. There’s no excuse.
Cam flat out said his only relationship was with Matt.
The guy doesn’t want to recruit and has let the entire coaching staff under him degenerate to the point where we have not one recruiter left on the coaching staff. It’s gross mismanagement that most of us fans have seen coming since the initial staff was built and then lost Slice.

To blame the message board for losing a recruit to me is the silliest thing ever. A staff making cumulatively several million bucks per year’s job is to bring in the recruits. Message boards losing recruits means to me that the staff isn’t doing good enough of a job communicating with these kids about this stuff and showing the players they’re wanted ... period. Cam is gone because Matt is gone. Blaming any recruiting faux pas on the fans is lame.

From the NY POST-
Mack said the departure of Abdelmassih, his lead recruiter and, according to sources, the only St. John’s coach he had a strong relationship with, played a factor in his decision. But Mack also wasn’t sure how long Mullin, who has two years left on his contract, would be at St. John’s, even though the head coach told him he had no plans to go anywhere.

Sounds like he's been in communication with Mullin.

Also sounds like a BS excuse because he has said he would come here for a year and enter the draft so how long does he need Mullin to be here?

Since I was the one who said good riddance, let me explain; Mack clearly stated his desire to go pro after one year so I don’t want him here, playing for a pro contract, not the team or the school. That’s what Ponds just did, that’s what Jakaar Sampson did. I root for St. John’s, not developing pro players; there is a D league for that. If Mack or his Mom took offense to that, too bad.

Login I don’t believe Panther was referring to your post. You are an exceptionally level headed poster. I am pretty sure he was referring to old school Redmen’s post.

Posts on this board that reflect the approach of "If I don't know it, it must not be" make me uncomfortable. Something to do with teaching people that learning how to ask better questions is the real goal, at least in working with people suffering from co-occurring mental illness, substance abuse, and trauma derived disorders. This board is a great escape and when the stuff I work on (behavioral health) gets on the board it loses its escape quality. This is the first time in 20 1/2 years that how I work has run in to the way posters are presenting as a source of tension.
