Buzz Williams Leaving

Reported 7 years 18 million. That seems like a good reason to leave.

Any of the mentioned names would be good at Marq. Buzz did a great job there. I hope they remain strong.

Marquette will hire a good coach who will not devalue the BIG EAST

Would think he would go after the BC job instead if he wanted to bolt to the ACC.

BC is a bad situation with maybe the worst administration to work for and an an almost non existent fan base under the age of 50. If he was having issues with MQ admin why move to BC?

jESUITS are not the easiest of the clergy to deal with but, they are SMART. Shaka or otherwise.. Think Lavin wants a trip down to TOBACCO Road , The Wake Forrest job is open. They can win in the ACC, Skip Prosser did.Plus, it's a great GOLF school. fore.

Thing is STEVE'S resume isn't that great currently.. Insiders know his limitations on the Bench better than we do..Pete Gillen on CBS was incredulous as to how poorly we played against Providence and RMORRIS. Said it was like we had never seen a zone all year.

Ex-St. John's coaches never get better jobs. NC State was the better job but does Mary strike you as a Carolina girl?

Would have to go way, way, way back in SJU when Frank McGuire went to UNC.

I think NR got a better job. He got a job he could do (Kansas) after leaving a job he couldn't do (SJU). How much more can you ask?

Actually, in our recent history (60+ years), not really a fair assessment. Lapchick and Carnesecca both coached in the pros, but returned to SJU, and desired nothing better in college). Mahoney failed. Fraschilla was offered more money and a better job, and his attempt to use that offer as a bargaining chip was what really undid him, not any nonsense about dropping his pants. Jarvis failed. Roberts failed. My initial fear with Lavin was that he'd re-establish himself here, and then take off for something better. At this point, there are plenty of better situations than St. John's, and if we did hire and up an coming guy at some point, if he has success here, could be up and gone.

Newsflash: The Big East is already devalued. While the Big East got off to a nice start this year, there isn't much comparison to the league that had Syracuse, UCONN, Louisville, Notre Dame, and Pitt. Considering that the conference was in shambles just a year ago, we should be happy. The league is competitive top to bottom, but there are no killer teams at present.

The entire country lacks killer teams, let alone the BE.

Amen to that line.

For one shining moment there was one killer team this year, Mercer!

I heard about this rumor but never thought it was legit. Shocked about this, if he was gonna jump ship I would of thought it would of been for a bigger job, not a lateral or even worse job. Bad news the Big East

If it's a lateral or worse job, how is that bad for the Big East?

What the posters who are concerned are thinking is the ACC is better than the Big East...and in the long run this is a better job. Marquette needs to step up and hire a winner.

ive been to Blacksburg twice - it is the worst place in America.
they have a lot of money and big time facilities but it is the asshole of the earth.
great hire for them

I think that is where the late CRGreen was living.

The best ACC coaches are close to retirement and VaTech may never be in the top half of a 15 team league so you need to see the forest for the trees. He had a crap year at Marquette and was offered a ton of money at a school no one wants to end up at so in the long term he will need more cow bells in Blacksburg.

All this does is show that the Big East will just be a stepping stone to better conferences.

Lawmanfan is on the money with his post about VT having a seat at the table.

WHAT TABLE???

Gonzaga is a better basketball job! Everyone is reaching for straws here to bash the Big East. Fun/FOAD even even throws in the Milwaukee weather. Blacksburg is in the mountains of western Virginia with cold winters! Morgantown WV is more urban and closer to a real city! If he flops he will be fired like his predecessor. I suspect the A10 will be his next stop after VaTech for a better basketabll job. I am sure Marquette told him "Don't let the door hit your ass on the way out". Their next coach will be a big name coach who will bring a lot of buzz which is what Marquette needs more than that buzz cut bozo.

I always liked Buzz, thought he was a class act and a great coach. Liked him even more after he stomped out the WV logo before they departed. Don't forget the article posted on this site about him just less than week ago about the work he does with children. He's actually taking a pay cut to go to Virginia Tech, the article says he was making 3 million at Marquette. So he must have personal reasons for this move, because on the surface it doesn't make sense to take on an ACC bottom feeder for less money.

he looks like Hank from breaking bad
I was always partial to Curly in the 3 stooges ( even more so since he took that job ) but I can definitely see a little Hank in him too

Buzz is just the latest in a line of successful Big East coaches that have followed the money when deciding to leave the Big East.

Lets hope that the schools send some of the added Fox Sports television money to upgrade and retain coaches.

He went from $2.8 million at Marquette to $2.6 million at Va Tech.

How is he following the money? He's taking a pay cut....

After being selected pre-season to be #1 in the BE, he must have been feeling some serious heat. Even last year, when they made the Elite Eight in the Tourney, Forbes had him on their list of “most overpaid” coaches.

According to the Milwaukee newspaper yesterday:

“At $2.8 million a season, Williams was drawing a top-10 salary. The Golden Eagles stay in five-star hotels and little expense is spared on the coach during recruiting trips.

A terrific coach, Williams is a peculiar man who needs constant love and attention. After his first bad season in six years at Marquette, a 17-15 record and no postseason tournament, Williams apparently did not find the adoration that came with taking the Golden Eagles to three Sweet 16 appearances in three years.”
