Buzz Williams Leaving

I think he is an arrogant a hole. If he thinks he can compete with Louisville, Duke, North Carolina and Syracuse good luck. I think NC State, Virginia, Georgia Tech, Miami, Clemson, Wake Forest,Florida State, Notre Dame and possibly BC are better jobs. Good luck fighting to make it to the NIT.

The simplest explanation I can come up with is Va Tech offers 7 yrs; he goes to MU admin (with interim AD) and asks if they are willing to extend him. They say no. More security at Va Tech.

There is talk that MU will not be that good next year, with what they are losing and who they were bringing in. Buzz probably sensed that the heat would increase next year.

how about he sees that 7 years at VT (an ACC school) can offer more stability than the Big East where Buzz sees we are already a mid-major conference?

The BE is not going out of business and Marquette would always be among the better teams...A Va Tech, they will rarely, if ever, get above mid-conference

The BE is not going out of business. That is correct. However, the BE what we saw this year (3 or 4 bids) is going to be more the norm than 6 or 7 bids. We are no longer a Top Conference. Marquette is a better program than VT hands down, but they play football at VT and they dont at Marquette. Therefore VT is in the Big Time conference where there is more stability and better teams - and Williams took the bait.

Was it a good move? I dont know.He didnt rebuild Marquette. Crean left it in great shape for him. VT is a disaster, so who knows how he will do. BUT he is in the conference where there is FAR MORE stability, FAR MORE EXPOSURE and where there is absolutely no pressure to win. He just got a 7-Year deal and we all know that in 7 years the ACC will still be a top conference. 7 years from now the Big East will be stuck even further in Mid-Major Land playing its conference tournament in Atlantic City or some other horrid destination while the ACC is playing at MSG.

You don;t really believe this do you?.....Could you?

Was talking to my brother yesterday who lives in Milwaukee and he stated that the reason for Williams leaving Marquette was because he was unappreciated there!. Interesting! The consensus in Milwaukee is basically "don't let the door hit you on the arse on the way out"

Howland would be a huge coaching upgrade.

Over ???
Buzz Willams , I am not really sure. Guy did a great job at Marquette. Wisconsin is not exactly a recruiting hotbed.

Milwaukee and the mid west are fertile recruiting areas actually.

Yep, historically Chicago has served M'Q well in particular.

It is a smart move. 7 yr contract, move to what he called the premier conference, easier to recruit, the situation in theBE is uncertain.. no one knows if it will rise again. He is bailing out.

The rise of Buzz Williams is crazy. This guy goes from a losing season at New Orleans in his only year as a head coach to an asst at Marquette for just one season and then takes over a LOADED Marquette team with four future NBA players and a bunch of great players like Dominic James and Jerel McNeal. Marquette took a huge risk on him with no track record and he just sh*ts all over them. Maybe he's not that good? He's never built anything himself. He took over a program that win an average of 23 games a season the previous 7 years and made a final flour with Dwayne Wade a few seasons prior.

To his credit, he used that momentum and recruited very well. How will he fair when he is part of a program with no momentum and his name has become irrelevant? He better land some guys soon or it could get ugly.

He'll work the Juco arena, where he has great contacts. Too late for this year, but suspect next year he will get a few studs there. I respect his teams play hard & he is better X&O guy than people realize. That said, he will have a tough go turning things around at VaTech for sure.

And if Howland takes the job the Big East can say there was an upgrade at the coaching position. Good for the league.

If true, this would explain a lot....from ESPN guy in Minneapolis:

@DarrenWolfson · Mar 21
Why Buzz Williams left Marquette now, per sources: AD left in Dec. With that, clause in contract changed Buzz's buyout from $2M to 100K.

Well that may have unlocked the handcuffs, but still it not reason by itself to jump ship. Reasons cited thus far makes sense, and going to a more stable league is likely one.

The state of Wisconsin seems to produce more D-1 big men than New York these days. Haven't really looked at their roster closely this year for hometowns, but Wisconsin routinely grabs one or two bigs from in-state.

@jerrymeyer247: Hearing it is getting close to official between Ben Howland and Marquette.
