Buzz Williams Leaving

Greg Marshall seems too good to be true. I'd swap Lav for him in a heartbeat.

He makes Lavin money now. That would take more than I see STJ spending.

It would be worth whatever $$ it takes to get him here. That guy has Hall of Fame talent. If he was at a major conf school and had major conf talent on his roster, he could win multiple national champinoships, something he'll never do at Wichita St. And hes got to be thinking to himself that very thing, especially after losing to Kentucky.

@jerrymeyer247: Hearing from multiple sources that Shaka Smart to Marquette is after all very likely to happen and happen soon.

Wow...Shaka makes Marquette really scary.

VCU is now dead for Big East talks. No history and no Shaka? No thanks.

Terry Larrier? Ring, ring.

It was moot anyhow. I mean the Big East would never have taken a mid-major program with a middling history that just happened to skyrocket into the national spotlight due mostly to a brilliant, young coach.

That would just be foolhardy.

Even with Shaka, I never thought VCU should be considered. They have absolutely no history. I don't care how many students they have. Shaka was not going to stay.

This enrages me!

HE was ready to leave VCU. St. Johns absolutely could have had this guy had they gone after him :furious:

SJU does not have an opening. Keep in mind he turned down UCLA last year, Illinois in 2012 and NC St and Maryland in 2011.

Post more, fordham.

The good news is that Howland is still available for St John's....

Lavin is not going anywhere, he won enough games this season to protect his job. I predict that (a) his contract will be extended and (b) he will receive a raise.

I'm not a fan at all, I'd love to see Masiellio here instead - but it is what it is, and I hope that for the sake of the program, Lavin can deliver the goods.

I would love Shaka to get the Marquette job. I've enjoyed watching VCU since Jeff Capel was there so it'd be sad to see them lose their coach but I didn't like what Buzz Williams leaving implied about the perception of the Big East. Shaka Smart is annually one of the hottest names for jobs every off-season recently, so to see a guy like that take a Big East job over an ACC or AAC job would negate that.

I'm curious if Greg McDermott would try to parlay these last few years in to another job. That would be jumping ship. Creighton's cupboard is bare next year. No McDermott, Wragge, Gibbs and Manigat. I know it didn't work out for him in the Big 12 after he left Northern Iowa but he ran back to a top Missouri Valley job which is pretty cushy. The Big East is a lot for unforgiving and Creighton could have a hard time sustaining routine success

I wouldn't hire him after last night's beating. Baylor is a great team but Creighton looked totally unprepared. Imagine what people would say about Lavin if he had the National POY and took a beating like that.

Sure, he had the national players of the year but the NCAA Tournament is all about matchups. Creighton is not a difficult team to beat if you have athletes which Baylor is stocked with. They are skilled but very limited. Anyone who had Creighton advancing in their brackets past that game doesn't watch enough basketball.

Every coach that switches jobs in the off season is coming off a loss.

Butler didn't have the athletes of many other teams but they lost at the buzzer in the finals to a Duke team loaded with top recruits.

Shaka is from Milwaukee so this makes sense, might not of wanted SJU. Big Big fan of Shaka Smart; if things didn't work out with Lavin, this would be the guy i'd want but glad this guy is coming is coming to the big east if reports are true
