Buzz Williams Leaving

Buzz is just the latest in a line of successful Big East coaches that have followed the money when deciding to leave the Big East.

Lets hope that the schools send some of the added Fox Sports television money to upgrade and retain coaches.

How is he following the money? He's taking a pay cut....

What is the state income tax in WI vs VA? 7.75% in WI, vs. 5.75% in VA

I'm fascinated by the theories for leaving Marquette for VT (since I cant think of a reasonable basketball one). Whether its location, conference, taxes, climate, ESPN, some increble King Arthur-esqe table, no one will care if Howland or (gasp) Smart takes the job. As I watch this tournament I see parity up and down, no conference domination, and it reminds me that BE 2.0 did right by themselves. Reinvest Fox money into the programs and the product and eyeballs will improve. Who cares why Buzz went off to that crap job? Of course my theory is a sexting/catfish/brats scandal with Ryan Braun, more interesting than furniture

I agree, the Big East we knew and loved is gone forever. As long as we get into the Big Dance, I don't care about the "sex" of a conference anymore, A10 got how may teams in this year? I good conference is a good conference, if we don't get MD AA's, I will settle for really good college basketball players. It seems that we may return to the old days of Lapchick and Carnesecca, where we make the tournament consistently with tough city players, who stay 4 years, with an occasional star. I am fine with that. Whether Lavin is part of that who knows.

I heard about this rumor but never thought it was legit. Shocked about this, if he was gonna jump ship I would of thought it would of been for a bigger job, not a lateral or even worse job. Bad news the Big East

If it's a lateral or worse job, how is that bad for the Big East?

What the posters who are concerned are thinking is the ACC is better than the Big East...and in the long run this is a better job. Marquette needs to step up and hire a winner.

The best ACC coaches are close to retirement and VaTech may never be in the top half of a 15 team league so you need to see the forest for the trees. He had a crap year at Marquette and was offered a ton of money at a school no one wants to end up at so in the long term he will need more cow bells in Blacksburg.

They'll retire and their teams will poach from schools with the top established coaches. There won't be talk, like here, of taking fliers on assistants or up and comers unless we're talking about their own assistants.

He went from $2.8 million at Marquette to $2.6 million at Va Tech.
Really ? Holy crap I didn't realize that

VaTech deal, however, includes a banjo & Deliverance video.

After being selected pre-season to be #1 in the BE, he must have been feeling some serious heat. Even last year, when they made the Elite Eight in the Tourney, Forbes had him on their list of “most overpaid” coaches.

According to the Milwaukee newspaper yesterday:

“At $2.8 million a season, Williams was drawing a top-10 salary. The Golden Eagles stay in five-star hotels and little expense is spared on the coach during recruiting trips.

A terrific coach, Williams is a peculiar man who needs constant love and attention. After his first bad season in six years at Marquette, a 17-15 record and no postseason tournament, Williams apparently did not find the adoration that came with taking the Golden Eagles to three Sweet 16 appearances in three years.”

The first sentence in the final paragraph is very interesting. How do they know that?

I think in these smaller cities like Milwaukee, the media is all over these guys 24-7.

That's correct but the 2.6 is guaranteed for 7years!

The mega conference Big East of football and basketball schools is thankfully gone forever. Hopefully, Ackerman and the school presidents build the conference into what we had in the 80's and early 90's. Their seems to be plenty of money for the new Big East schools to retain top facilities and hoops programs. Coaches will come and go just as the players.

Marquette will hire a good coach who will not devalue the BIG EAST

Newsflash: The Big East is already devalued. While the Big East got off to a nice start this year, there isn't much comparison to the league that had Syracuse, UCONN, Louisville, Notre Dame, and Pitt. Considering that the conference was in shambles just a year ago, we should be happy. The league is competitive top to bottom, but there are no killer teams at present.

Beast it is unfair to try to equate the new conference with the original. The old Big East did a lot of tweaking before it became the monster we all remember, for example all the teams you listed in your post were tweaks other than Syracuse.

The simplest explanation I can come up with is Va Tech offers 7 yrs; he goes to MU admin (with interim AD) and asks if they are willing to extend him. They say no. More security at Va Tech.

There is talk that MU will not be that good next year, with what they are losing and who they were bringing in. Buzz probably sensed that the heat would increase next year.

how about he sees that 7 years at VT (an ACC school) can offer more stability than the Big East where Buzz sees we are already a mid-major conference?

Wouldn't a coach rather be competitive in a mid-major conference instead of the door mat of a major conference? Work hard at the mid-major team to get a better major conference job?

Plus, the expectations on him are going to be so much lower. He is going to a team that finished dead last in its conference last year and has only made the NCAA Tourney 8 times--ever. He is giving up a very small amount of compensation for that--maybe nothing, given that he has the guarantee. Not a bad move, in my opinion.

So he is leaving Marquette because he can't deal with the expectations at Marquette???? Come on.

I'm not saying that he "can't deal" with the expectations at Marquette. I'm saying that for virtually the same amount of money he's going into a situation where the bar is much, much lower. And, he has a chance to be an absolute rock star if he can win a couple games against teams like Duke and Cuse. It's almost a no-brainer.

The BE is not going out of business and Marquette would always be among the better teams...A Va Tech, they will rarely, if ever, get above mid-conference

The BE is not going out of business. That is correct. However, the BE what we saw this year (3 or 4 bids) is going to be more the norm than 6 or 7 bids. We are no longer a Top Conference. Marquette is a better program than VT hands down, but they play football at VT and they dont at Marquette. Therefore VT is in the Big Time conference where there is more stability and better teams - and Williams took the bait.

Was it a good move? I dont know.He didnt rebuild Marquette. Crean left it in great shape for him. VT is a disaster, so who knows how he will do. BUT he is in the conference where there is FAR MORE stability, FAR MORE EXPOSURE and where there is absolutely no pressure to win. He just got a 7-Year deal and we all know that in 7 years the ACC will still be a top conference. 7 years from now the Big East will be stuck even further in Mid-Major Land playing its conference tournament in Atlantic City or some other horrid destination while the ACC is playing at MSG.

Avon, go ring some door bells! You have no clue what the Big East or ACC will be like in 7 years. VaTech will be FAR MORE exposure? Where? Blacksburg is basically the campus of VaTech! The schools that dominate Virginia media are UVA and VCU followed by James Madison in basketball. No pressure to win? They FIRED their last coach after two years.
Oh, as for your ACC, future Big East school Dayton just beat Syracuse in Buffalo.
